2. JOHN CARPENTER’S ‘THE WARD’
THE NARRATIVE OF ‘THE WARD’ IS SIMILAR TO WHAT WE WERE AIMING FOR OUR
FILM TO BE ABOUT. THE WARD IS A STORY BASED ON A WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN
LOCKED IN A MENTAL INSTITUTE. THE MAIN INFLUENCE OF THE WARD WAS THE
WAY IN WHICH THE NARRATIVE WAS CONSTRUCTED. THERE IS A TWIST IN THE FILM
WHICH IS SOMETHING HANNAH AND I WERE KEEN TO HAVE IN OURS TOO. THERE IS
A SENSE OF CONFUSION THROUGHOUT THE FILM HOWEVER EVERYTHING
BECOMES CLEAR WHEN ALL IS REVEALED AT THE END OF THE FILM. THE ONLY
PROBLEM POSED BY FEATURING A MASSIVE TWIST WAS THE WAY IN WHICH WE
WOULD INCORPORATE IT INTO OUR TRAILER AND TO STILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE
SOME SORT OF CLARITY TO THE VIEWERS.

THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE
THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE IS BASED ON REAL LIFE EVENTS WHICH IS SOMETHING
WHICH I FELT WAS A GOOD THING TO INCLUDE IN A HORROR FILM. THE FACT THAT THE
AUDIENCE HAVE A KNOWLEDGE THAT THE EVENTS IN THE FILM ARE BASED ON SOMETHING
WHICH HAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN REALITY. THE NARRATIVE WAS THE MAIN THING
ABOUT THIS FILM WHICH INFLUENCED ME. I ALSO LOOKED AT OTHER FILMS WHICH WERE
BASED ON REAL EVENTS AND DID A BLOG POST ON WHAT THE STORY WAS ABOUT AND
HOW THEY MAY INFLUENCE ME.

IDENTITY
THE MAIN PLOT OF THIS FILM IS BASED UPON MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES. THIS IS A VERY
SIMILAR BASIS TO THE PLOT AS TO WHAT WE HAVE USED FOR OUR TRAILER, THIS FILM
FEATURES THE TRADITIONAL TWIST IN A HORROR FILM. THERE ARE STRANGE GOINGS ON
THROUGHOUT THE FILM AND THEN ALL IS REVEALED TOWARDS THE END. THIS IS
SOMETHING WHICH I FEEL WE WANTED TO ACHIEVE WHEN CREATING OUR TRAILER AND
OUR IDEAS REALLY MATCHED THE TRADITIONAL HORROR/THRILLER CODES AND
CONVENTIONS.
THE CONJURING
THIS FILM IS ABOUT A SUPERNATURAL PRESENCE HAUNTING A FAMILY WHICH IS NOT
SIMILAR TO OUR FILM IN ANY WAY APART FROM THE FACT THAT IT IS PART OF THE
HORROR GENRE ALSO. WE TOOK LOCATION INSPIRATION FROM THIS FILM HOWEVER. IT IS
LOCATED IN A LARGE HOME WHICH MAKES MUCH MORE OF AN EERIE ATMOSPHERE. THE
NARRATIVE HAS BEEN THE MAIN INFLUENCE OF ALL OF THE OTHER FILMS WHICH WE
LOOKED AT FOR OUR RESEARCH INTO SIMILAR PRODUCTS HOWEVER THERE WERE
CAMERA ANGLES AND SHOTS IN ‘THE CONJURING’ WHICH INSPIRED US AND WE ADAPTED
THESE TO USE IN OUR TRAILER.

CHARACTER BY THE PHONE WAS INSPIRED BY
THE SHOTS CONNECTED BELOW. MANY OF THE
SHOTS WE HAVE USED ARE NOT EXACTLY THE
SAME AS THE ONES FROM ‘THE CALL’ HOWEVER
THEY ARE SIMILAR IDEAS WHICH HAVE BEEN
ADAPTED.

LIKED THE WAY IN WHICH THE IDENTITY
OF THE CHARACTER IN THE SHOT IS A

ALTHOUGH THIS POSTER IS FOR A TV SERIES AND
NOT A MOVIE I DREW QUITE A LOT OF INSPIRATION
FROM IT WHEN PLANNING IDEAS FOR MY OWN
MOVIE POSTER. I LIKED THE WAY THE FOCUS WAS
ON THE CHARACTERS FACE WITH HANDS OF AN
UNKNOWN PERSON ON THE FACE/MOUTH.. THE
FACT THAT THE PERSON WHO THE HANDS BELONG
TO IS NOT IDENTIFIED MEANS THAT THERE IS A
SENSE OF MYSTERY. I THOUGHT THAT THIS WAS A
REALLY GOOD IDEA FOR A MOVIE POSTER AS IT
WOULD PUT QUESTIONS INTO THE AUDIENCE’S
HEADS AND THEREFORE MAKE THEM WANT TO
WATCH THE TV SERIES (IN MY CASE THE MOVIE). IN
RELATION TO THE FONTS ON THIS POSTER THERE
WAS NOT MUCH WHICH I TOOK INSPIRATION FROM.

MOVIE POSTER INFLUENCES
SEEING AS OUR TRAILER IS A TEASER TRAILER I LOOKED AT
SOME TEASER POSTERS. THIS ‘CARRIE’ POSTER ONLY
FEATURES AN IMAGE AND TAG LINE. I THOUGHT THAT THIS
WAS QUITE EFFECTIVE HOWEVER IT WAS NOT SOMETHING

I USED SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM TWITTER TO RECEIVE AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ON MY
MEDIA PRODUCTS. I FOUND THAT TWITTER WAS THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO RECEIVE
FEEDBACK AS IT IS QUICK AND EASY. AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF POSTING A TWEET I
WOULD RECEIVE A RESPONSE BASED ON A PERSON’S OPINION. I WOULD USE THE
PERSON’S RESPONSE WHO SEEMED MOST FIT TO OUR TARGETAUDIENCE.
I USED PINTEREST TO PIN CERTAIN IMAGES, DRAFTS, FILM NAMES ETC. THIS ENABLED
ME TO DETERMINE WHETHER THEY WERE EFFECTIVE OR NOT BASED UPON HOW
MANY ‘LIKES’ THEY GOT.
SURVEY MONKEY IS AN EASY TO USE PROGRAMME. IT ENABLED ME TO DEVISE A
SHORT IN DETAIL QUESTIONNAIRE TO RECEIVE ANSWERS WHICH WOULD LET ME
CREATE A VERY EFFECTIVE MOVIE TRAILER WHICH MATCHED THE TARGETAUDIENCE.

I asked for feedback on twitter when I had created my first draft
template of both my magazine cover and my movie poster. Both
responses said that they liked the style of the font. Throughout
the drafting and research process I realised that LWL and many
horror now use minimalistic fonts. The font I had used looked
very dated in comparison so that is why I didn’t stick with what
the feedback told me.

BLOGGER HAS BEEN USEFULAND MY NUMBER 1 PLATFORM WHICH I HAVE
USED TO TRACK ALL OF THE RESEARCH, PLANNING AND DRAFTING OF MY
PRODUCTS, ANCILLARY AND MAIN. IT IS USEFULAS IT IS AN INCENTIVE TO
MANAGE MY TIME WELL (DATED BLOG POSTS). BLOGGER IS COMPLETELY
ONLINE WHICH MEANS IT IS A LOT EASIER AND MORE ORGANIZED THAN
HAVING A PROJECT KEPT ON PAPER.. THE PROS OF USING BLOGGER
CLEARLY OUTWEIGH THE CONS. THE DOWNFALLS HAVE NOT EFFECTED ME

DAFONT IS A VERY EASILY
ACCESSIBLE FONT WEBSITE WHICH

STAGES?
THESE ARE ALL OF THE EDITING WEBSITES WHICH I HAVE USED. I USED KUSOCARTOON MAINLY IN DRAFTING AND
PLANNING TO TEST OUT CERTAIN EFFECTS AND WHETHER THEY LOOKED EFFECTIVE OR NOT. THE MAIN TWO
EDITING SITES I USED ARE BEFUNKYAND FOTOR. I FOUND THAT THERE WAS A WIDE RANGE OF EFFECTS ON BOTH
SITES.
I USED PAGE PLUS IN THE CREATION OF MY ANCILLARY PRODUCTS, I WAS FAMILIAR WITH THIS PROGRAMME
BECAUSE I USED IT AT AS LEVEL HOWEVER THERE WERE MANY NEW FEATURES I DISCOVERED DURING THE A2
PROJECT, FOR EXAMPLE ‘PHOTO LAB’ IS AN IN-PROGRAMME PHOTO EDITOR WHICH MEANT ONCE I HAD INPUTTED
AN IMAGE I COULD ADD FURTHER EFFECTS AND REFINE THE PICTURE WHILST IT WAS IN THE PROGRAMME. I WAS
FAMILIAR WITH ‘CUT STUDIO’AND THIS ALLOWED ME TO REMOVE THE WHITE BACKGROUND FROM THE FONTS I
SCREEN GRABBED FROM DAFONT. HOWEVER THE QUALITY WAS NOT GREAT SO I THEN DECIDED TO DOWNLOAD
THE ACTUAL FONTS AND THEY AUTOMATICALLY WHERE AVAILABLE IN PAGE PLUS. I CREATED A MAGAZINE COVER
TEMPLATE AND A MOVIE POSTER TEMPLATE ON PAGE PLUS SO THAT DURING DRAFTING AND PLANNING ANY
DRAFTS I MADE COULD BE THE SAME SIZE AND SHAPE.
MOVIE PLUS IS THE PROGRAMME HANNAH AND I USED TO PUT TOGETHER OUR TRAILER. THIS PROGRAMME
ALLOWS YOU TO EASILY CUT, SLOW DOWN, SPEED UP AND PUT FILM CLIPS TOGETHER. EDITING THE SOUND
ON MOVIE PLUS WAS PROBABLY THE THING WHICH I FOUND MOST DIFFICULT HOWEVER ONCE I GOT TO GRIPS
WITH IT, IT BECAME A LOT EASIER. THERE ARE VARIOUS LAYERS FOR BOTH CLIPS AND SOUNDS WHICH MEANS
YOU CAN MUTE OUT CERTAIN PARTS AND ADD OTHER SOUNDS IN.

STAGES?
I HAVE USED MICROSOFT POWERPOINT TO DO MY EVALUATION. I FELT THAT IT
WAS EASIER TO USE THAN PREZI. I AM FAMILIAR WITH POWERPOINT WHICH
MEAN IT WAS A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO ORGANIZE MY WORK. POWERPOINT
ALLOWED ME TO USE LINKS AND IMAGES AT EASE.
THE ORGANIZATION OF SLIDES I EASY AND YOU CAN RE-ARRANGE THEM
WITHOUT HASSLE. SHAPES AND FONTS ARE AVAILABLE WHICH MEANS AM ABLE
TO MAKE THE POWERPOINT EASILY READABLE WITH A MIX OF LINKS,
PICTURES AND ICONS.

AND LIGHTING. I USED PAGE PLUS AT
BOTH AS AND A2 AND FEEL AS
THOUGH I HAD AN ADVANTAGE WHEN
STARTING A2 AS I WAS ALREADY
FAMILIAR WITH THE PROGRAMME.
A2 WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT IN SOME WAYS AS MY
MAIN PRODUCT WAS MOVING IMAGE. I DON’T FEEL AS
THOUGH IT WAS A STRUGGLE GETTING TO GRIPS WITH
MOVING IMAGE AS MOVIE PLUS, ALIKE TO PAGE PLUS, IS
VERY EASY TO NAVIGATE AND USE.
