‘KEY NESTS 4 CHILDREN’
Fundraising Campaign - Project Presentation, 19.12.2012 -31.01.2013
Lekpongunor Community (Sege)
SEKAM TRUST INTERNATIONAL and the EVS Volunteers, request your support, to contribute for
the fundraising campaign organized through the project ‘KEY NESTS 4 CHILDREN’ supported by
European Commission within the program Youth in Action, European Voluntary Service.
‘Key Nests 4 Children’ is the initiative of three organizations from The Netherlands, Romania and
Ghana which foresees the involvement of 26 EVS volunteers from Netherlands and Romania, in different
activities regarding continually development of our society.
The topic addressed by the project is youth participation into preventing child labour and
exploitation of children through work by engaging non-formal education measures meant to give children
and their families support in finding alternatives for spending free time while making space to safe personal
development of the children and intercultural dialogue between European and African cultures.
1. The current situation
Lekpongunor is established as fishing and farming community in Sege region (Ghana), with a
number of approximately 3000 people and around 1000 children from which 595 are attending the Public
School that we visited. We concentrated our research on the needs of the children in the community, as
presented by the stakeholders, the chief of the community, the headmaster, teachers, parents and the
children themselves. Our empiric observations are also an important part of the research as stressing the
need of education and development in these areas, apart from the child labour problem.
The data collected during the research campaign regarding the infrastructure of the school and the
issues related to it, can be summarized as follow:
The school has 11 class rooms and there are approximately 55 children in one class, some of the
classes are combined because of the lack of space and class rooms. As we observed, in these
conditions the teaching process is not efficient.
This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.

Another issue related to the resources, concerns the lack of materials (computers and computer
laboratory) they need to use for the ICT classes (Information Communication Technology). As a
result, they cannot put in practice their theoretical knowledge and they don’t have the possibility to
develop new skills.
The research shows that most of the children from this school lack of manuals and books for
further readings and individual study, the schools itself doesn’t have resources to provide them. As
a result, they don’t develop their creativity, motivation and interest in studying.
The above mentioned issues were highlighted by the stakeholders in the community, as well as the
teachers and the children themselves. The results of the research campaign come along with our empirical
observations.
2. The objectives of the campaign and resources needed:
building 3 class rooms fully equipped;
transforming a class room in a computer laboratory;
getting at least 5 computers;
renovating a class room and transforming it in a library;
getting 300 books.
To reach the objectives we need 3000 EUR (4000 USD) until 31 January 2013, starting with
February 2013, with the help of the community and the support of the stakeholders we will start the work,
and at the beginning of April 2013 the facilities will be completed.
3. The follow up
The volunteers will stay in the community for a period of 3 months and develop non-formal
education activities engaged to reach the needs of the children in the community, as educative activities,
workshops with the children and the families, information campaign on child labour impact on their victims
and EU experience share on child rights, prevention and measures; The implementation of the activities will
be done in the same time with the fundraising campaign mentioned in the present document.
This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
