We test innovative new tools for data mining emerging information
The weight of that information can be heavy at times – finding the signal in the noise is important and can save lives
In 2012 Humanity Road volunteers contributed over 20k hours of service monitoring disaster
Text messages that are received by family and loved ones empower those outside the event to be a participant
You can take an active part during disaster! After Hurricane Sandy, Over 48k people were helped in this location through
The power of facebook, social media messages and both digital and onsite support Evert from Disaster Tech Lab
Spoke about this earlier in the day.
V&TC’s – innovation, experienced, rapid deployment, technological and skilled support – its a special collaborative team
That leverages a digital intellectual pool to respond rapidly
So what can they do?
Early mapping and reporting can provide rapid population, damage or aid assessments.
It can help tackle the sea of information when the local community team needs it
Within 48 hours of activating – the Libya crisismap was live and providing valuable content on population migration and spontaneous IDP camp locations in the countries bordering Libya.
Within 24 hours UN OCHA assessment team published their social media map. The data from this map was exported into other solution maps creating a single source location for data at the onset of an event.
Not only speed but size can affect a response agency’s ability to perform their role effectively. On July 2, 2013 over 4,200 villages reportedly had been impacted in the Uttarakhand district of India, the Seeds and Sphere team needed information on who was responding to their disaster. Work already in progress was tapped and within 72 hours, a living digital 3W report of over 100 agencies was delivered.

Digital Humanitarian Network is innovation in Humanitarian response.
Through collaborative engagement we improve data accuracy, veracity and reduce redundant work teams
Potentially reducing the time it takes for disaster assessment and
allowing us to move more quickly from disaster response into disaster recovery.
