Quantitative Research...
• Quantitative research is a summary of
questions that aims to gather a range of short
answers. This method of questions aims to get
answers faster which is helpful as it is a
quicker mode of research.
Primary & Secondary research
• I have used both Primary and Secondary research
to ensure I receive the most effective feedback.
• Primary research is any research that you have
done personally, where as, Secondary research is
research that has already been done by others,
that you then go onto use. These forms of
research can be found through videos, blogs, the
internet, questionnaires, etc...
Type of research I am undertaking...
• I used object-orientated questions so that I
would have a better understanding of what
peoples opinions are on opening titles.
• This would then help me to construct my
opening title sequence as I will have a clear
knowledge of what people want to see and
what they don’t want to see.
1. What is your gender?
Gender
Female
Male
•The balance of gender was
evidentially more females
then males.
•This could have an effect
on the results that you want
to get depending on
whether your intro is aimed
towards a female
demographic or a male one.
•However, these results are
fine as my intro is aimed
towards a both genders.
2. What age category do you fall under?
Age Category
10-20 cat
21-30 cat
31-40 cat
41-50 cat
51-60 cat
Over 60 cat
•There is a somewhat even
spread of candidates from the
older age groups, with the
majority of results coming
from my target demographic
for my intro which is 10 – 20
category.
• I would of liked to get more
results from the older
categories though as this may
come in handy for the future,
however I am happy with the
results I got.
3. What ethnic group do you belong to?
Ethnic Group
White British
Black British
•The majority of my
candidates where White
British. With the exception
of one.
•This has no real effect on
my results.
4. Where do you live?
Home
Arundel
Wallington
Banstead
Tadworth
Surrey
Nork
•There was quite an even
spread of where different
people lived.
•This will also not have an
overall effect on my intro,
apart from the audience
recognising the locations
and symbolising them with
key themes and issues in
my intro.
5. Which of the following best describes
your current occupation?
Occupation
Part Time
Student
Full Time
Student
Employed
Unemployed
Other
•The reason for there
being 12 results instead
of 11 is because one of
the full time students also
has a job.
•However this once again
doesn’t have a great
impact.
•It would of been better
to get more results from
employed people as they
may have a better
understanding of some of
the themes and issues in
my intro.
6. Have you ever done a media/film based
subject?
Subject
Yes
No
•The majority of candidates
have done a media/film
based subject before.
•This is beneficial for me as
the audience will have a
greater knowledge of what I
have encoded into my intro
and the reason behind that.
7. Do you understand what is meant by the
term “Social Realism”
“Social Realism”
Yes
No
•The majority of the
candidates know what the
term means, or have some
understanding which is
also beneficial to me as
they will be able to
connect more with why I
have used certain themes
and issues and how they
link into Social Realism.
8. Do you think Social Realism films depict
life as it really is?
Sales
Yes
No
•The majority thought that
they did, however I was
surprised that 4 people said
they it didn’t.
•To further this result I would
want to ask those people
why they though that Social
Realism films don’t depict life
as it really is so that my intro
will be able to efficiently.
9. Which of the following Social Realism
films have you seen?
Films
Trainspotting
London to Brighton
Kes
Half Nelson
AdULTHOOD
KiDULTHOOD
Fish Tank
Nil by Mouth
This is England
Shifty
Billy Elliot
None of the above
•It is a good thing that
most people have seen
a lot of these Social
Realism films.
•This is because they
will be able to identify
key aspects that they
have seen in these films
and compare it to my
intro.
•I can also ask them
what they liked about
these films and take
their answers intro
consideration when
making my intro.
10. Are you familiar with any of the following Social
Realist directors?
Directors
Danny Boyle
Paul Andrew
Williams
Ken Loach
Shane Meadows
Stephen Daldry
Eran Creevy
Ryan Fleck
None of the above
•The most popular
director was Ken
Loach.
•The results from this
question have no real
effect on my intro.
11. Do you know where Social Realism
films are usually screened?
Screened
Yes
No
•Most of my candidates knew
where the films are screened.
•These results do not have
much of an effect on my intro.
•If anything it would be wear to
screen my film if I was to make
one.
12. Do you enjoy watching films?
Watching Films
Yes
No
Sometimes
•The majority of the people
said yes, with the acceptation
of one person saying
‘sometimes’.
•These results are want I
wanted to achieve as it’s
evidentially good that they
enjoy watching films.
13. How often do you watch films?
How Often
Never
Once a week
Three times a
week
More than three
times a week
Once a month
Three times a
month
More than three
times a month
•The results from this
question do not have a
great impact on my target
demographic or what I
would need to include in
my intro.
14. What genres do you enjoy?
Genres
Horror
Comedy
Romance
Documentary
Action
Adventure
Drama
Social Realism
Animation
Sci-Fi
Fantasy
Musical
Crime
Other
•From my results I can see
that the favourite genre
was Comedy.
•However, some of them
did like Social Realism as
well which is beneficial for
me as that is the genre that
my intro comes under.
15. How often do you go to the cinema?
Cinema
Once a week
Every two
weeks
Once a
month
Every two
months
Every six
months
Once a year
Never
•From my results I can see that
my target demographic to not
go to the cinema all that often.
•This doesn’t have a negative
impact on what I was trying to
achieve.
16. How do you consume the films you
watch mostly?
Consume
DVD
Cinema
Online downloads
Online streaming
i.e. Netflix/
Amazon Prime
Illegally
Other
•The results show that
most people consume
the films that they
watch mostly through
online steaming.
•If I was to make a
whole film then this we
effect me as I would
know how to market it
better so that more
people would see it.
17. Where do you watch Social Realism
films?
Watching Social Realism films
Never
watched one
Cinema
DVD
Online
streaming i.e.
Mubi
Illegally
Other
•Most of the people
watch Social Realism
films through an online
streaming website
called ‘Mubi’.
•This would be
beneficial to me if I was
to make a Social Realism
film and not just an intro
as I would know how to
make it the most
accessible.
18. Do you find Social Realism films easily
accessible?
Accessible
Yes
No
•I would want to carry out
further investigation into why
people believe that Social
Realism films aren’t as
accessible as mainstream
ones and how this can be
changed.
19. What themes/issues do you consider to
be underexplored in films?
Themes /Issues
Rebelion
Nature and Nurture
Jealousy
Robbery
Class and Status
Kitchen sink realism
Abortion
Poverty
Other
•This question is
important for my
research as it gives me
ideas of what themes
and issues to incorporate
into my intro and will be
popular with my target
demographic.
20. What types/groups do you consider to
be underrepresented in films?
Types/Groups
Gender
Age
Ethnicity
Sexuality
Class and
Status
Regional
Identity
Physical
ability/disability
•I asked this question as I
wanted to have some extended
knowledge on what
types/groups of people that I
should include in my intro and
explore more in depth so that
my target demographic would
be satisfied.
21. What aspects of British culture do you
feel could be well explored in film?
Aspects of British Culture
Family
School
Religious Life
Philosophy
Sport
Politics
Other
•This is another question
that has an impact on my
intro as it gives me
knowledge of what my
target demographic want
to see more of, therefore, I
will once again be able to
satisfy their needs by
including it.
