5. Social Landscape
There’s a social network to satisfy just about
any online behavior.
Each serves a very unique purpose- sharing,
playing, networking, buying or localizing,
today’s social channels have you covered.
In essence, these behaviors boil down to two
main ideas: Storytelling and Connections.

10. We Know…
Primates have been walking the earth long before
homo erectus ever laid eyes (or feet) on it.
They use tools and “mark” places not only to claim
territory, but as social displays (asserting status,
mating, etc.) or to find food again at a later date.
Primates are very social creatures. They care for one
another through grooming and share food and
knowledge with others in their clan.

12. We Know…
Tribal and nomadic cultures used storytelling to
pass on the history of their ancestors, teach
morals to their young and as part of courtship or
marriage traditions.
Stories were told, through spoken word, art,
music and dance.
Connections to the past and to each other
through story were extremely important forces for
this culture.

Written word is later used by many cultures for
centuries as a method of storytelling and
connecting people through religious texts, fiction
and non-fiction books, newspapers and letter
writing.
Proof of human existence, experience and
interaction is now being documented and shared
in a tangible format.

14. The Observation
Mankind is historically driven by innate social desires and empathy to share and tell stories
As a species, we crave personal connections and proof or justification of our existence

17. The Observation
We have not adapted to the “new technology” of social media
Social media technology has evolved to satisfy our preexisting evolutionary behaviors in a
digital culture
The technology is new, but as emotionally charged creatures, our needs remain the same
@RevChrisMurphy 2013
19. The Hypothesis
Social Media
satisfies our
emotional needs.
When we experience
emotions, dopamine
is released into the
brain, providing a
“feel good” reaction.
Logic alone can’t
provide that
reaction.
Thus utilitarian only
platforms will not
satisfy our deep
rooted needs or
empathetic
tendencies.

@RevChrisMurphy 2013
20. The Hypothesis
As long as we continue to require or seek out:
• Human Connections
• Stories
• Justification
• Validation
• Status
• Collections
Technology and social platforms will continue to evolve
in order to meet the needs of those (and other)
emotionally driven behaviors.
And we’ll
still be
here.
@RevChrisMurphy 2013
21. The Hypothesis
If we can continue to analyze behaviors that tie back to a deeper need, we could potentially
predict future social trends in social media.
