Will your equipment allow you to mix one song into another so that there are no breaks in between songs? This
is one of the top reasons to hire a wedding DJ rather than just iPod or having a friend DJ
Will you take breaks? If so, what happens during the breaks? Again, unlike a band or an iPod, a DJ should be able
to have a seamless flow of music with no breaks.
Will you take requests during the wedding? Some wedding DJs love requests, while others don't like having to
hunt for an obscure song or interrupting their play list.
Will you act as emcee and announce the cake cutting, first dance, toasts, etc? Can someone else act as emcee?
Most DJs are used to making these types of announcements, but if you want a more personal touch you may want
to ask your father or another charismatic person to act as emcee.
How many weddings do you DJ each year? Will you have another event on the same day? Since DJs work
corporate events, bars, bar mitzvahs and birthday parties, you want to make sure he or she is comfortable with
weddings and the higher level of sophistication they require.
Do your prices include the sound system, speakers, wireless microphone for the toasts, etc?Yes, .
What if we really want to hear songs that aren’t in your music collection?
There are many options that you can do. You can download, then send via email, Dropbox, thumb drive, Laptop,
Ipod, MP3 player.
Will you advertise your services to our guests? Will you be discrete?
No, will be no banners, nothing mention to you guest. Cards will be available upon request.
What do you wear as a wedding DJ?
Typically Tux. Unless specified.
Is a deposit required to hold your date? A deposit is the professionally accepted method of securing your date and
DJ. A deposit gives you and your DJ a firm sense of professional trust, commitment and well being.
Can you meet your specific DJ? You should insist on meeting your DJ. If the service has more than one DJ
available on your date, then ask to meet two or three. The DJ you choose doesn't have to be your new best friend,
but you should feel comfortable and at ease with your DJ.
What kind of equipment do you use?
Make sure they they are using there own equipment, not rented, or shared. Make sure they know how to use it.

Can I hear a sample of your mixes or do you have a video?
Find out if they have podcasts, radio shows, videos or other live recordings of their work so you can get a sense
of their style and personality.
Where do you get your music?
Many DJ’s will cringe when you ask them this question because many of them download their songs illegally from
file sharing services. A respectable DJ will subscribe to a music service to get their new music. I would also
caution against DJ’s claiming to have 80 bajillion songs in their library. Many times, these huge libraries have
been obtained illegally and the music is low quality. If a DJ won’t spend the money to purchase their music legally
(the single biggest expense most DJ’s have), what else are they skimping on?
How long can you hold the date for us while we decide?
A reputable DJ will allow you at least a week to check references, talk to other DJ’s, etc before you sign the
contract. If they’re trying to pressure you into signing a contract immediately, this is a big red flag. Beware!
Ask your DJ upfront about playlists.
Don’t just assume a DJ will play every song you want them to play. While reputable DJ’s will do their best to play
the music you want during your reception, if a couples playlist is a major fail (ie. they love it, but their guests don’t
and nobody dances), they cannot (and should not be expected to) explain to your guests that they had nothing to

do with what music is played. Your DJ should know which songs will work for what crowds. Hire a professional
who knows their music and how to read a crowd and let them do their job.

What is your policy on alcohol or smoking during the wedding?
A professional DJ will never consume alcohol or take cigarette breaks during your wedding. If you interview a DJ
and he tells you he needs a few drinks to “loosen up” while working, you should probably look for a DJ with
higher standards of professionalism.

What equipment do you use?
A professional wedding DJ will have made a serious investment on the equipment they use on the job, and they
will show a lot of enthusiasm in talking about them. They are not just people who play mp3 files on a laptop or an

iPod when they work. They will have the full gamut of top-of-the-line DJ equipment such as speakers, cordless
microphones and the like. High-end brands of DJ equipment include ElectroVoice, OSC, JBL and Crown..
