Test Taking Tips for the EOGs May 24, 25, & 26, 2011
“Why do we have to take these long and boring tests?” Helps identify your strengths and weaknesses. NOTE: All test forms and colors are equal in difficulty! So don’t let the colors fool you! Red is NOT harder than the other colors!! Helps teachers evaluate how well they teach based on your scores. Assures that everyone, after graduation, possesses the skills necessary for the real world.
“Why is my score important?” All of your scores help the state to grade NBMS on their performance. Good EOG scores = Good grade for NBMS! Also used in determining student progress and ability in reading and math. If you are in 8th grade, you will have 3 scores: Reading, Math and Science!
Helpful hints….. Write in your test book!! Cross-out, circle, make notes, highlight. Circle ALL OF YOUR ANSWERS IN YOUR TEST BOOK AND bubble your BUBBLE SHEET!!!!! Make sure the question number in the test book matches the question number on your bubble sheet. Read and listen to the directions CAREFULLY so you know what to do!
Reading Specifics….. READ ALL THE QUESTIONS & CHOICES FIRST. This will make you aware of what to look for when you read the passage. READ THE PASSAGE IN ITS ENTIRETY Underline, circle, or highlight key words, phrases and ideas as you read the passage. Re-read each question and all answers choices. Cross-out answers you know are wrong. Select the best answer choice remaining.
Math Specifics….. ALWAYS SHOW YOUR WORK! Take advantage of the blank paper. Write in your test book! Check for careless mistakes (i.e. misplaced decimals, using the wrong operation, pressing the wrong button) Make diagrams if necessary. Visualize what the question is asking.
Good Practices in Test Taking Eat a good, HEALTHY breakfast. Fuel for thought – protein! Get a 8 hours of sleep. No texting/IMing/talking into the middle of the night. Take your time but pace yourself. Attempt every question. Mark the ones that you don’t know and come back later. ***Make sure to skip that number on your answer sheet too. Eliminate all of the choices that you know can’t be right.
Good Practices cont. ALWAYS stop at every 10th question to make sure your answer sheet matches the question that you are answering. Again….MARK YOUR ANSWERS IN YOUR BOOK AND BUBBLE SHEET!! Use the time remaining to recheck your answers! Go back to complete skipped questions and make sure all bubbles are filled. Don’t change any answers unless you’re sure they’re wrong. Your 1st answer is most likely correct. Ignore other students- Don’t assume your falling behind if someone finishes before you!! Maybe they’re rushing through in a panic. Work at your own pace & focus on doing YOUR BEST! RELAX! Take a deep breath every once in a while.
MOST IMORTANTLY….. Be confident! You will do your best if you try your hardest!
