The head of the family informs the reader that the Pope has called on warriors to defend holy places in a faraway land, and as the head of the family is too old to fight, the task falls to the reader. The journey will be long and dangerous, but the reader will see new places and possibly gain glory for their family. The reader is asked to consider the positives and negatives of joining this war.

knights. One day your uncle, the head of the family, tells you
that the pope has called on warriors to defend holy places in a
faraway land. Your uncle is too old to fight, so it falls on you to
answer the pope’s call to war. The journey will be long and
dangerous. Still, you will see new places and possibly win
glory for your family.

Southwest Asia for the control over
Palestine.

5. “Calling All Christians!!”
In the late 1000s, Turkish Muslims capture
Jerusalem, making it no longer safe for Christians
there.
Pope Urban II of the Roman Catholic Church called
on all Christians to fight to reclaim the Holy Land.

6. The Crusades 1096 - 1291
• Nine total crusades plus a Children’s Crusade
• Crusade means “marked with a cross”
• King Richard I “the Lion Heart” and Saladin
most notable leaders during the
3rd Crusade.
• The Crusades are largely seen as a
failure for Christians, thousands died
and they did not reclaim the Holy Land
7. A Family Affair
• Most all the male members of families joined the Crusades.
Some women did as well.
• Eleanor of Aquitaine accompanied her first husband, King Louis
VII of France, on the 2nd Crusade.
• Her son was King Richard I “the Lion Heart” of England, the
leader of the 3rd Crusade
8. Robin Hood???
• The story of Robin Hood and his
merry men comes from the time of
the Crusades
• King Richard “the Lion Heart” was
away on the Crusade and his brother,
Prince John, was left to take care of
the kingdom. He taxed all the people
very badly, so a hooded man named
Robin is said to have robbed from the
rich and given to the poor to stop his
evil ways.
