Presentation made at an event hosted by Plymouth Culture Board, and supported by the University of Plymouth, Plymouth City Council and the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, Thursday October 7, 2010. The theme of the presentation: what society and the economy wants and needs from culture and urban development is changing. In the context of the Government policy programme in the U.K. called 'Big Society', different values and emphases are now coming in to play. Three examples are given of urban renewal projects at different urban scales that express some of these new values and some of their economic impacts outlined.

Krista Neher, (www.KristaNeher.com) presented on how retail businesses can use Twitter to drive sales and awareness. Many retailers are slow to use Twitter, because it seems complicated and overwhelming. This presentation shows exactly why retailers should use Twitter, the advantages of Twitter and how to get started. To learn more about Twitter, check out www.BootCampDigital.com/Twitter Retail businesses want to generate traffic and sales, and Twitter is a great way to do both. Since Twitter allows businesses to connect with people who don't already follow them (unlike Facebook and LinkedIn), Twitter is the perfect way to connect with new audiences and grow awareness. Twitter marketing can be difficult for businesses, however once you understand what Twitter is and how it works, the results can be phenomenal. What makes Twitter unique is that it allows businesses to connect with people and join in conversations via search. For example, if someone on Twitter Tweets about going to your neighborhood, you can Tweet at them with some restaurant or parking tips. Essentially, Twitter is a powerful discovery tool, especially for retailers. An additional opportunity for retailers is to use Twitter to get people talking -- encourage your customers and browsers to share their experiences or favorite products.

This presentation from WordCamp Columbus #wccbus covers how to build a strong brand online. Brand building is what makes people fall in love with brands - it is the inspirational aspect of marketing. The presentation includes 5 steps to effective brand building: 1) Assess the blogosphere or the landscape. Who are your competitors? What are people already doing? What works? What doesn't? 2) Determine your Audience - Who are you trying to reach? What are they interested in? Where can you find them? 3) Define your brand - Where do you fit in? What is your unique positioning? How will you be different? What does your brand stand for? 4) Bring your brand to life - Execute against the desired position/look/feel/character that you want to build for your brand. 5) Brand building Principles - Clear Positioning, Single-Mindedness (don't be afraid to be niche), Consistency, Personality.
