Presented at Agile on the Beach (4th September 2014) Nearly two and a half decades ago, Richard Gabriel proposed the idea of “Worse Is Better” to explain why some things that are designed to be pure and perfect are eclipsed by solutions that are seemingly compromised and imperfect. This is not simply the observation that things should be better but are not, or that flawed and ill-considered solutions are superior to those created with intention, but that many solutions that are narrow and incomplete work out better than the solutions conceived of as being comprehensive and complete. Whether it is programming languages, operating systems or development practices, we find many examples of this in software development, some more provocative and surprising than others. In this talk we revisit the original premise and question, and learn that in the current Agile climate it is an approach that can still teach us something surprising and new about product development.

Mobile application development does not need to be difficult for us Web Developers. No longer do we need to learn a whole slew of new programming languages to create a mobile application. We can use our existing skills and create mobile applications with Html, JavaScript, and CSS. Then deploy to Android and iOS devices using a single code base that looks, feels, and performs like a native mobile application. Apache Cordova enables the packaging of our web code into the mobile application that we will deploy to the App Stores but it does not include a UI framework. For the UI framework, we will be using Ionic framework. The Ionic framework takes the worry out of making the UI look, feel and perform correctly on the slew different Apple and Android devices that your users will have. It allows you to focus on your business logic and not the underlying infrastructure. Your time to market will be greatly reduced. In addition to the free, open-sourced framework, Ionic also has a slew of highly useful cloud based tools that you can pay for it you need them such as Push Notifications, User Authentication, Native Builds, and Live Updates. Push Notifications allows targeted pushes and custom scheduling to improve push notification engagements. User Authentication provides a single authentication solution with email & password authentication, as well as third-party providers like Facebook, Twitter, Google and more. Native Builds turns your code into the native app binaries for the Apple and Android with a single command. Finally, Live Updates gives you the ability to push updates and UI changes to your user immediately without going through the app stores. In this talk we will dive into what it takes to get started, look at the features of the Ionic framework and finish off by creating a sample application with the Ionic framework. You will walk away from this talk with all of the tools that you need to deliver your first mobile application

Presentation slides from Dustin Tauer's 2014 MIMA Session: What is your Web workflow? If your situation mirrors that of most organizations, the process often begins with some initial planning and discovery, followed by the design phase. In the design phase, Photoshop is opened and wireframes evolve into static designs. Once approved, these designs are passed to the developer which leads to testing, tweaking, and finally, launch. This workflow is great for traditional websites, but major evolution is needed to account for the changing landscape that is responsive design. This session will present different strategies and processes for effectively designing and developing responsive websites. We’ll look at how taking a content-first approach rather than a design-first approach can significantly reduce the number of issues and iterations throughout the process. With mobile traffic quickly surpassing desktop traffic, a new workflow process is imperative to helping us be better prepared for the constantly changing device landscape.

The biodesign approach for fabricating textiles using root-based materials is explored in my final project for my Postgraduate in Fabricademy. I experimented with different types of grain seeds, growing media, patterns, and environments. Additionally, I discovered various post-processing techniques, such as colouring, changing flexibility, and applying biodegradable coatings. The Amber Grain Embroidery project aims to design bio-folklore costumes featuring elements made of wheat and barley roots. Raw wool is used as a binding agent. The root embroideries are complemented by dried grass and pressed material from seeds. The costumes are inspired by traditional Slovak and Czech folklore costumes, symbolizing the importance of grain as a vital source of livelihood and material wealth.
