The General assembly is the corner stone for a fair and multicultural debate. And is the Centre for policy
making, as well as being the representative for the United Nations.

11.Summarize the 8 main functions and powers of the General Assembly in your own words (look at the
  bullet points). /4

Some of the Main functions of the General Assembly are:
    To suggest and consider new ideas to further the peacekeeping goal
    Discuss questions on relating to International Peace and Security.
    Discuss questions Concerning to the “Scope of the Charter” or any powers/functions of any part
       of the UN
    Initiate Studies and make recommendations to possible government cooperation’s,
       development of international laws, recognizing Human Rights/Fundamental Freedoms, and
       collaboration in the Economic, Social, Humanitarian, Cultural, Educational and Health fields of
       study.
    Suggest ideas to a peaceful settlement on situations which may impair relations between
       countries
    Receive/Consider reports from Security Council and other parts of the UN.
    Readjust the UN’s budget and assess financial assessments of Member states.
    Vote in Non –Permanent members of Security Council, And, by recommendation of Security
       Council, the Secretary General.

The United Nations are based upon a Democracy style voting system, you need majority vote to pass a
bill, or in the case of the UN to determine the final outcome of a certain question, Major issues require
at least a 2/3rds vote so that it is more accepted by the people. The UN is trying to reach a point of
Overall Consensus on issues, so that when passed, they are more strongly supported by everyone.

  Council? /5
The Permanent members of the Security Council include the countries of China, France, Russia, The
United Kingdom, and the United States.
The Non-permanent members of the Security council include, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon,
Lebanon, Nigeria, Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal, and South Africa.

14.How do the non-permanent members get a position on the Security Council and how long do their
  terms last? /2

        The Members of the Non-Permanent seats of the Security Council are elected in by the General
        Assembly, but are first chosen by Regional groups. Each term for the Non-Permanent members
        of the S.C. lasts up to Two years and 5 new members are picked every year.

In my opinion the 10 functions and powers of the Security Council are to:
      maintain a state of peace throughout the world,
      to investigate a dispute which may lead to trouble ahead,
      To Recommend ideas to solve international disputes
      To establish a plan to regulate weapons
      The actions taken against a threat, or possible threat.
      Call upon members to apply “economic sanctions” to avoid the use of force
      Allow countries to take action (military) against a threat.
      Recommend new members to SC
      To exercise trustee functions in Strategic Areas.
      Recommend to the Gen Assembly a Secretary General, and, alongside the General Assembly,
         Elect Judges in the International Court of Justice.

The Economic and Social Council are responsible for :
     Promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic/social progress.
     Identify solutions to international Economic Social and Health Problems.
     Encourage international cultural and educational cooperation.
     And to Encourage universal respect for the human rights and all fundamental freedoms.

17.What 3 powers do the UN Economic and Social Council have, and what percentage of all UN human
  and financial resources can it draw upon? /4

The Economic and Social Council has the power to initiate studies and make reports on the 4 main
responsibilities posted above, the power to assist the preparations and organization of major
international conferences and to facilitate a coordinated follow up to conferences. The E&s Council can
draw upon 70% of the Human and Financial resources of the entire UN system.

 The International Court of Justice is located at the Peace Palace in The Hague Netherlands.

        The Court’s function is to settle legal disputes (in accordance to International Law) submitted by
        Member-States of the UN, and to give opinions on legal questions authorized by the UN Organs
        and specialized agencies.

20.How many judges does it have and how long do they serve for? /2

        The Court has 15 judges elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council, and the
        judges serve for 9 years.



Secretariat
21.Who is the head of the Secretariat? What is the main function of the Secretariat? /2

The head of the Secretariat is the Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon. The Main function of the Secretariat
is to carry out the day to day jobs of the United Nations.

22.List 4 jobs that members of the Secretariat may perform as duties for the UN? /2

Four different jobs that the Secretariat may perform for the UN include, Peacekeeping operations,
Mediating International Disputes, Surveying economic and social issues, and preparing studies on
Human Rights.
23.How many staff did the Secretariat have around the world as of 2010? /1

Statistics show that the Secretariat had around 44,000 Members around the globe in 2010.

24.What is the gist of the oath that members of the Secretariat take? /1

The Gist of the oath that the secretariats take is: to swear to never to seek or receive orders from orders
from Governments outside their authority.

        The United Nations headquarters Resides in Manhattan New York New York, USA. Sven other
        locations which the UN keeps a strong presence is Addis Ababa, Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva,
        Nairobi, Santiago, and Vienna.

And is the Centre for policy making, as well as being the representative for the United Nations. 11.Summarize the 8 main functions and powers of the General Assembly in your own words (look at the bullet points). /4 Some of the Main functions of the General Assembly are:  To suggest and consider new ideas to further the peacekeeping goal  Discuss questions on relating to International Peace and Security.  Discuss questions Concerning to the “Scope of the Charter” or any powers/functions of any part of the UN  Initiate Studies and make recommendations to possible government cooperation’s, development of international laws, recognizing Human Rights/Fundamental Freedoms, and collaboration in the Economic, Social, Humanitarian, Cultural, Educational and Health fields of study.  Suggest ideas to a peaceful settlement on situations which may impair relations between countries  Receive/Consider reports from Security Council and other parts of the UN.  Readjust the UN’s budget and assess financial assessments of Member states.  Vote in Non –Permanent members of Security Council, And, by recommendation of Security Council, the Secretary General.
  • 4. 12.The Search for Consensus – Read the final 2 paragraphs on the General Assembly Page and explains their gist in your own words. /2 The United Nations are based upon a Democracy style voting system, you need majority vote to pass a bill, or in the case of the UN to determine the final outcome of a certain question, Major issues require at least a 2/3rds vote so that it is more accepted by the people. The UN is trying to reach a point of Overall Consensus on issues, so that when passed, they are more strongly supported by everyone. The Non-permanent members of the Security council include, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon, Nigeria, Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal, and South Africa. 14.How do the non-permanent members get a position on the Security Council and how long do their terms last? /2 The Members of the Non-Permanent seats of the Security Council are elected in by the General Assembly, but are first chosen by Regional groups. Each term for the Non-Permanent members of the S.C. lasts up to Two years and 5 new members are picked every year. Functions and Powers of the Security Council http://www.un.org/Docs/sc/unsc_functions.html 15.In your own words type out the meaning of the 10 functions and powers of the UN Security Council. / 5 In my opinion the 10 functions and powers of the Security Council are to:  maintain a state of peace throughout the world,  to investigate a dispute which may lead to trouble ahead,  To Recommend ideas to solve international disputes  To establish a plan to regulate weapons  The actions taken against a threat, or possible threat.  Call upon members to apply “economic sanctions” to avoid the use of force  Allow countries to take action (military) against a threat.  Recommend new members to SC  To exercise trustee functions in Strategic Areas.  Recommend to the Gen Assembly a Secretary General, and, alongside the General Assembly, Elect Judges in the International Court of Justice.

(4 points) /2 The Economic and Social Council are responsible for :  Promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic/social progress.  Identify solutions to international Economic Social and Health Problems.  Encourage international cultural and educational cooperation.  And to Encourage universal respect for the human rights and all fundamental freedoms. 17.What 3 powers do the UN Economic and Social Council have, and what percentage of all UN human and financial resources can it draw upon? /4 The Economic and Social Council has the power to initiate studies and make reports on the 4 main responsibilities posted above, the power to assist the preparations and organization of major international conferences and to facilitate a coordinated follow up to conferences. The E&s Council can draw upon 70% of the Human and Financial resources of the entire UN system. Secretariat 21.Who is the head of the Secretariat? What is the main function of the Secretariat? /2 The head of the Secretariat is the Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon. The Main function of the Secretariat is to carry out the day to day jobs of the United Nations. 22.List 4 jobs that members of the Secretariat may perform as duties for the UN? /2 Four different jobs that the Secretariat may perform for the UN include, Peacekeeping operations, Mediating International Disputes, Surveying economic and social issues, and preparing studies on Human Rights.
