Vegetarian Presentation
1. Vegetarianism
"Nothing will benefit human health and
increase the chances for survival of life on
earth as much as the evolution to
avegetarian diet." —Albert Einstein
2. Why Become One?
• Eating meat:
– Wastes World Resources
– Accelerates Climate Change
– Destroys Environment
– Depletes World’s Oxygen
• It’s better for you.
3. Wastes Resources
• 70 percent of the earth's agricultural land
produces feed.
• Beef Conversion ratio is 40:1
• 1kg of animal protein requires 100L of water
• Contributes to water pollution and land
degradation (desertification).
– 60% of United States pastureland is being
overgrazed
4. “If all the grain currently fed to
livestock in the United States
alone were consumed directly
by people, the number of
people who could be fed
would be nearly 800 million.” -
Dr. David Pimentel
5. Accelerates Climate Change
• The livestock sector produces:
– 65 percent of human-induced nitrous oxide.
– 37 percent of methane
– 68 percent of human-induced ammonia
– One-third of all fossil fuels used to make meat.
• Overall it produces 18-51% of all greenhouse
gases.
• Destroys rainforests and oceans.
6. Destroys Rainforest
• 70% of clearing is for cattle-grazing.
• Between May 2000 and August 2006, Brazil
lost 150,000 square kilometers of forest.
• Half an acre is lost every second.
• Rainforest accounts for 20% of World Oxygen.
• Rainforest is a major climate regulator.
7. “Dead Zones”
• Livestock uses 45% of water used in food
production
– Water goes back into environment polluted
• Pollution creates Algae blooms in oceans
– Algae blooms die off and sap oxygen from ocean
• No oxygen=no life. Creates a “Dead Zone”
– 70% of all world’s oxygen created in places
threatened by Dead Zones.
– Ocean is world’s biggest climate regulator
9. Health Benefits
• Many objections come from Folk nutrition.
– Vegetarians can get Iron, Vitamin B12, and
Vitamin B6 with little difficulty.
• Vegetarians have significantly lower
percentages of heart problems.
• Diverse diet= more vitamins and minerals.
– Less likely to be Obese.
• Reduces risk of certain Cancers.
10. Why You MUST Act
• Issues of Climate Change are social issues.
– Cannot depend on Technology
• Only solution is to change lifestyles.
• Americans are more responsible for Climate
Change than anyone else.
• It is perfectly healthy if not healthier.

Wastes resources that could be used for people and causes desertification. Accelerates climate change directly through Green house gases and indirectly by environment destruction.
70 percent of all the agricultural land on Earth is NOT grown for the consumption of people. It is grown for the consumption of livestock which are fed for years and then slaughtered to feed people. This wasteful process takes 40 pounds of vegetable matter to produce 1 pound of animal matter. This is ridiculously wasteful. Just think, you could be having forty meals instead of one if you were a vegetarian, or better yet. You could potentially feed 39 other people with your decision. Also 1 kilogram of animal protein requires 100 liters of water to produce. This means that an enormous amount of fresh water needs to be devoted solely for livestock cultivation, 45% of it in the United States. And we will later see how this water then harms the environment as well, but for now I’m content to say that wasting this much water cannot be justified when many people around the world are dying of dehydration. Also, not only does livestock cultivation waste resources directly, it also indirectly prevents those resources from being replenished. This is because you cannot rotate Livestock like you can crops. When Livestock grazes on land it leeches it of its nutrient resources and turns it into a desert. Right now, 60% of the United State’s pastureland is being overgrazed meaning that it is becoming incapable of use for Agriculture purposes. Herds of Livestock are essentially creating deserts where there was once arable land. This is not a sustainable practice because if our current rate of consumption continues the rate of rampant desertification in the world will starve us out of food.
The number of people who could be fed using just the grain in the United States would be 800 million. That’s not even counting the livestock raised out of the country and imported here. Anyway it’s hard to justify this kind of waste in the face of global poverty and starvation.
Establishing why climate change is a bad thing is the subject of a whole different presentation and I’m just assuming you recognize the threats to the environment it presents so I won’t waste your time on that. In any case Livestock is one of the three biggest threats to the Environment (behind overpopulation and fossil fuels). NitrousOxide is a greenhouse gas that is almost 300 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in heating up the globe.Methaneis a greenhouse gas that is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in heating up the globe.Ammoniacontributes significantly to acid rain.Figures of how much Green House gases the Livestock industry produces range from the conservative estimates of the UN Food and Health Organization at 18% (which doesn’t take in CO2 emissions) to the more complete accusations of the Worldwatch Institute at 51%. Both figures are damning because even if the figure rests at 18% that percentage is made up of gases that have an infinitely greater impact on global warming than Carbon Dioxide. So the livestock sector undoubtedly contributes enormously to Global Warming directly by its own Green House Gas output. However, it also indirectly accelerates Global Warming by moving the Earth’s capacity to filter out Green House Gases.
The greatest growth for the livestock industry is in developing countries, this also happens to be where a great deal of Rainforests are. 70% of all Rainforest clearings occur to make room for livestock grazing. Rainforests, despite being beautiful, being vestiges of biodiversity, and harboring plants that have numerous pharmaceutical applications, also have the fortunate side effect of producing 70% OF THE OXYGEN MADE BY LAND-BASED PHOTOSYNTHESIZERS. They are irreplaceable! And their loss is wholly detrimental to the quality of life on Earth and even its ability to HAVE LIFE AT ALL. Between May 2000 and August 2006, Brazil lost nearly 150,000 square kilometers of forest—an area larger than Greece—and since 1970, over 600,000 square kilometers (232,000 square miles) of Amazon rainforest have been destroyed. We are losing a part of it every day and it will stay that way until we make it unprofitable to harvest cattle. It makes sense really. I would pay to not cause the death of all life on the planet by asphyxiation rather than buy a piece of steak any day, and I think most logical people would.
A U.N. report says that the livestock sector accounts for 45 percent of the global budget of water used in food productionMuch of this water used in livestock goes back into freshwater sources like rivers and streams as manure or “wastewater” (or pollution). There are regulations for this massive dumping, meaning that the Government agrees that it is a problem nominally, but these restrictions are often circumvented and not enforced. As a result, massive algae blooms feed off of these byproducts and their population explodes. When these blooms die, their decomposition saps the ocean of oxygen, creating a “Dead Zone.”In a “Dead Zone” no marine life can be sustained because there is absolutely no oxygen in the water. This is essentially a desert on the water..
It’s true that the ocean is a big place but most life in the world’s oceans is centered on the continental shelf and most life outside of the continental shelf depend on it. As you can see these dead zones can easily cover almost all of it. Ecologists predict the extinction of all the ocean’s fish species by 2048 when taking into account the combined pressures of Dead Zones and overfishing.
But look Vegetarianism isn’t all self-sacrifice even though it may seem that way. Yes it is bad for the world to not eat meat but it’s also very good for you to not eat meat. Many choose a Vegetarian diet on the basis of health reasons. Many objections to the vegetarian diet are cultural ones, the Western diet insists that meat is necessary to get certain essential vitamins <Vitamin demonstration>Anyway, to get these small amounts of essential vitamins Americans shove down their throats far more cholesterol and saturated fats than they need which leads to all kinds of heart problems. Also studies show that the traditional American diet is actually lacking in its full range of vitamins and minerals because of its dependence on meat. When you have a diverse diet you are less likely to be obese because your body doesn’t have to eat as much to compensate. Also it has been empirically proven that a Vegetarian diet can actually reverse prostate cancer in its early stages. Also Breast and Colon cancer is significantly lower in countries which have less carnivorous diets.
Rajendra Pachauri, the Chairman of the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In September 2007, he was asked, “What do you personally do for climate protection?” He responded, “I have become a vegetarian.”Ultimately issues of Climate Change are social issues, meaning that Technology will not save us, there is no cop-out to the environmental problems posed by Livestock and the truth is that they threaten the whole planet. The only thing we can do to prevent the destruction of our planet is to drastically change our lifestyles and the sooner we do it the better. As Americans, there is no one in the world more responsible for this destruction than you and there is no one who is more capable of making this change. You who have been given so much, you owe it to the world to make this one small sacrifice to help solve world hunger and ensure the success of future generations. To deny this is to deny the truth, and to accept it and still not act is tantamount to willful ignorance and unadulterated selfishness.
