Case study - How Clifford Chances’ e-Learning gets results
1. How Clifford Chance’s
e-learning gets results
Discover how one of the most reputable legal
firms engages their global staff in learning
2. THE CLIENT
Clifford Chance is one of the world’s leading
law firms employing 6,000 people in 29
offices across 20 countries.
With offices dotted around the globe, the
firm has successfully embedded e-learning
as a vital component of its learning strategy
to reach all staff regardless of their location.
4. Diversity and quality of skills
Clifford Chance clients are accustomed to receiving a consistently
high level of service, delivered seamlessly wherever they are in the
globe. To maintain the quality of its services, Clifford Chance
employees need excellent legal knowledge, business and relationship
building skills. So, the delivery of learning across these areas is key to
the firm's success.
Time pressured and globally dispersed staff
Majority of their staff are time pressured fee-earners dispersed across
the world. This means Clifford Chance’s L&D team must constantly
find new, effective and consistent quality learning initiatives and
deliver them to a global audience.
Access to knowledge
They identified e-learning as a great compliment to classroom
training, and also as a learning method with potential to improve
access to knowledge and skills training on a global basis.
And…
5. Initially the e-learning team at Clifford Chance
created courses themselves and to their
delight, these were very well received even
though they didn't have any audio, video or
flash animation. Having proven the firm was
ready to embrace e-learning, they realised
there was a demand for a range, scope and
quality of e-learning that the in-house team
could not satisfy.
… no capability to deliver
quality e-learning in-house
6. THE DISCOVERY
We realised very quickly that if we wanted to
consolidate the initial enthusiasm for
e-learning as part of our learning culture, we
needed to increase the quality of content and
interactivity. That’s when we decided to
partner with an external company. Following
a competitive procurement process, we
began working with Commelius Solutions.

8. Solution: Engaging e-learning
When it comes to helping Clifford Chance’s learners behave more
effectively while handling cross-cultural transactions, presenting them
with quality and a high level engagement courses wad essential.
To successfully influence learners performance, Commelius
produced bespoke e-learning that incorporated media-rich,
video-based scenarios designed to inspire behavioural change.
Whenever Clifford Chance has faced deadlines on providing
business critical knowledge such as risk management, health and
safety, and a range of other targeted induction-level courses to client
facing staff, Commelius has responded with a more templated and
rapid approach to development.
9. The quality of courses that Commelius
delivers keeps on improving. They often
come to me with ideas to help us meet our
business objectives and their commitment
is critical – they always deliver what I need.

10. Solution: Learning on-demand
The concept of learning 'on-demand' has also been introduced at
Clifford Chance. Learning is designed to take place as and when it
suits staff, and can be accessed anywhere in the world. Thanks to
this more informal style of learning, fee earners spend less time away
from the office while improving their individual performance.
e-Learning has become a part of blended learning model at Clifford
Chance, where the theory is covered with e-learning; and classroom
time is reserved for brainstorming and role playing.
By reducing training expenses and time away from the office, Clifford
Chance is achieving a better return on its learning investment.
12. The value of e-learning has certainly proven its worth
and results in measurable business outcomes at
Clifford Chance.
Learner uptake at the firm has been excellent and
feedback shows that learners rate it as highly as
classroom courses - giving it 86% satisfaction
rating for excellence based on content, presentation and
relevance.
As a result, the overall skill level of the firm has been
improved. In fact, in one year alone,
6,000 e-learning module completions
were recorded.
13. Results: Improved global reach
e-Learning is now a key business driver for
us. Commelius has helped us equip staff
with the right skills and improve the quality
of service that our 29 offices around the
world provide to our clients. We would not
have been able to reach these people with
quality training if it wasn’t for our e-learning.

14. Results: Saved costs
e-Learning has saved us hundreds of
thousands of pounds in travel,
accommodation, classroom and
opportunity costs - had we attempted
to deliver the same volume of training
face-to-face.
