Overview of Agile and Scrum

Agile Principles


Highest priority is to satisfy the customer
through early and continuous delivery
of valuable software/products



Welcome changing requirements



Deliver working software (product) frequently



Business people and developers must work
together daily throughout the project

4
Overview of Agile and Scrum

Agile Principles


Build projects around motivated individuals



Most efficient and effective method of
conveying information is face-to-face conversation



Working software (product) is the primary measure
of progress



Agile processes promote sustainable development
(maintain a constant pace indefinitely)

5
Overview of Agile and Scrum

Agile Principles …cont’d





Continuous attention to technical excellence
and good design enhances agility
Simplicity (art of maximizing amount
of work not done) is essential
Best architectures, requirements, and designs
emerge from self-organizing teams
At regular intervals, team reflects on how
to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts

Overview of Agile and Scrum

A Quick Glance at Scrum:
It

is an agile framework
Self Empowered Teams
Quick delivery Cycles, as team work in Sprints.
Requirements are stored as Product Backlog Items and
prioritized regularly (Every Sprint)
Better Communication ( Regular Meetings )
Continuous Improvement
Better earned Business value..
The more disciplined teams are, the more successful they are
in adapting to scrum.
11
Overview of Agile and Scrum

Foundations of Scrum


Empiricism




Self-Organization




Do the next right thing

Rhythm




Small teams manage their own workload and organize
themselves around clear goals and constraints

Prioritization




Detailed up-front planning and defined processes are replaced
by just-in-time Inspect and Adapt cycles

Allows teams to avoid daily noise and focus on delivery

Collaboration


Leaders and customers work with the Team, rather than
directing them
12
Overview of Agile and Scrum

Core Values










Transparency
 Everything about a project is visible to everyone
Commitment
 Making realistic commitments
Courage
 Have the courage to commit, to act, to be open and to expect
respect
Focus
 Focus all of your efforts and skills on doing the work that you
have committed to doing
Respect
 Respect and trust the different people who comprise a team
13
Scrum: Sprint
Sprints







Team Progresses towards the goals in the series of
sprints or iterations.
Sprint length is decided at the beginning of the
project by the team and remains the same
throughout the project for a better Rhythm.
Typical duration is 2 to 4 weeks.
No Changes during a Sprint!! – Plan Accordingly

16
Scrum: Roles
Role: Product Owner


Thought Leader and Visionary



Drives the Product Vision (for example, with Story
Mapping)



Responsible for ROI



Prioritizes the Goals - User Stories as per the
market value



Maintains the Product Backlog with the team before
every sprint



Accepts the Working Product (on behalf of the
customer)

18
Role: ScrumMaster


Servant Leader: shields the team from external
forces



Facilitates the scrum process and enforcing scrum
values and practices



Supports the Team



Removes Organizational and Team level
Impediments



Socializes Scrum to Management



Enable close collaboration across all roles and
functions

19
Role: Team


Cross-Functional



5-9 Members



Self-Organizing



Focused on meeting Commitments



Usually full time team members are part of team

20
Role: Relationships

21
Rituals & Artifacts: Planning


Sprint Planning meeting held at beginning of each
Sprint



Duration and time-effort are fixed in any given Sprint



Goal is to have prioritized Sprint Backlog, broken
down into tasks, that the Team can commit to



During planning, Team commits to scope that can
be completed in the Sprint, taking into account the
definition of Done
22
Rituals & Artifacts: Daily Standup








Meetings held in same location, same time, every
day
Timeboxed at 15 minutes
Encourages self-organization, rhythm, and
collaboration
Not a status meeting
Each Team member speaks to:




What did I accomplish in the last 24 hours
What do I plan to accomplish in the next 24 hours
Any impediments getting in the way of my work
23
Flow & Artifacts: Sprint Review


Occurs at the end of each Sprint



Time to be “proud of ourselves” 



Inspect and Adapt the product (Empiricism)



The team meets with the Product Owner (and
Stakeholders) to demonstrate the working software
from the Sprint



This is a hands-on software demo (not a
PowerPoint) that usually requires some prep
beforehand( 2 Hrs )
24
Rituals & Artifacts: Retrospective


Occurs at the end of each Sprint



Inspect and Adapt the process (Empiricism)



Team, ScrumMaster & PO meet to reflect on what
went well and what can be improved



Tone of the meeting is that everyone did their best
and now look to how can we improve



Retrospectives must conclude with team
commitments to action
25
Rituals & Artifacts: Product
backlog







It’s a list of all the work on the project
User stories are listed such that, each has a value to
the customer
Initial prioritization done by PO on the basis of
market value /ROI
Re prioritization done at the beginning of each sprint
by PO with the team.

26
Rituals & Artifacts: Sprint
backlog






Created at the beginning of each sprint in planning
meeting.
Team members choose their work.
User stories with high priority are picked up.
Sprint length is considered while creating backlog
for the sprint.

27
Rituals & Artifacts: Taskboard






Active visual indicator
of flow of work
Should be visible to
team members at all
times
Should be kept current
Encourages selforganization, and
collaboration

28
What is in it for me? (Customer)


As a customer , I want to be able to
 Have Opportunity to provide feedback early
 Go to market faster with Quality
 Faster return on investment

29

As a Leader , I want
 To understand progress in terms of real progress
made on product .
 Better engaged & accountable team

30
What is in it for me? ( Team Member)



Who is a typical team member?
As a team member, I want
 A sustainable pace
 Satisfaction of quality product delivered
 Clear Priority and less interruption during
development
