How to Set Souvenir Limits While
Vacationing
How to Set Souvenir Limits While Vacationing

Souvenirs are everywhere when you vacation. Whether it’s a cute village with authentic
items or souvenir shops on every corner, spending money on them is inevitable. It can
often rack up and become out of control. Follow these steps to set souvenir limits while
vacationing.

Instructions
1.Plan your spending in advance. You’re only going to truly enjoy your vacation if you
can afford it. Decide before you even book the trip how much money you have to spend.
2.Budget an amount that you can spend each day of the vacation. Take into account the
souvenirs you want to buy, the attractions and dining.

3.Figure out in advance how much special souvenirs cost. If you’re traveling to Italy, for
instance, you know you’ll want to buy wine. Find out how much a bottle costs and decide
just how many you’ll buy.

4.Give children a budget they can spend on souvenirs. This promotes them to think of
special items, instead of wanting everything they see.

5.Limit yourself and children to special souvenirs only. There is a difference between
truly unique items that will forever remind you of your trip and those you buy on a whim.

6.Watch the little souvenirs, they add up. You may think magnets, key chains and pens
are cheap and won’t make a difference. But they will add up and, before you know it,
you’ll blow your budget.

Tips & Warnings
• Use traveler’s checks instead of credit cards. That way, you won’t have a bill when you
get home and you’ll know exactly how much you spent.

• Give each child a cash card with their souvenir allotment on it. This way, it’s up to them
to keep track of how much they have left. Plus, you don’t need to keep adjusting your
budget.

How to pick up a Unique Souvenir from your Vacation

Enlarge and frame your vacation pictures
Picking up a unique souvenir from your vacation will continue to remind you of the fun
times you had, long after your vacation. Sure, you can bring back yet another shot glass
or a t-shirt that you will never wear, but you will be wasting your money. Here are some
ideas for picking up a unique souvenir from your vacation.

Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
• Your thinking cap.
1.Bring back a brochure or a flier of a place you visited. It does not cost anything, and
you can add this to your photo album scrapbook style. If you have a particularly detailed
cross-sectional diagram of the pyramid you just visited, or an archaeological map of the
ruins you saw, you can even have them framed for a unique piece of art for your walls.

2.Buy a book written by a local author. Reading the book will bring back memories of
your trip, and nuances of the local flavor that you experienced. It will be like going on a
vacation all over again.

3.Buy a local magazine on a subject that you are passionate about. My son collects car
magazines from every country. He thoroughly enjoyed “reading” his Italian car
magazine, using the Internet to translate, after we returned from our vacation. He now
claims to be fluent in the language.

4.Pick up something useful that you would have bought anyway, even if you did not go
on the vacation. I bought a much needed winter jacket in Italy, and a pair of jeans for my
daughter. Many winters later, the jacket is still a lasting momento of our vacation.

5.If you are a compulsive organizer like I am, pick up a beautiful box from every place
you visit. They are easy to bring back, and very useful to keep things organized around
the house.
6.Look through all your travel photos, and select a couple to enlarge and frame if they are
meaningful to you. You will have a one of a kind piece of art to adorn your walls.

Tips & Warnings
• Buy art from a local artist
• Bring a cookbook for local recipes
• Buy a piece of jewelry that you will actually use.
• Steer clear of the touristy souvenir shops.
