New Biology of Human Life
courses, available for non-majors,
here at Moraine have opened its
doors for students interested in
learning about human structure,
functions, genetics and heredity.
"Every school has a course like
this, we just haven't updated the
course that we have in a while, to
have something like this;' intro-
duced Nicholas Hackett, associ-
ate professor of Biology.
After two long years of plan-
ning' BI0104 finally kicked off its
first fall semester ~n the 'C Build-
ing.
"Developing a new course is
really a tremendous amount- of
work, " he says;' you have to get
certain paperwork in, by certain
deadlines;' Hackett continued. ,
"We make sure the paper work
is accepted by the state, accepted
by other schools ahead -oftime:'
Unfortunately, Hackett isn't
teaching BI0104 this semester,
"Something happened with
one of the deadlines, where they didn't
end up listing Bl0104 in the current
catalog': he explained. '
"It's available online, but it meaps
that a lot of people didn't see it, and
didn't register. Those are the
people that we wanted to get
into BlO104, where they took
BIO 111 instead:'
The difference between a
BIOll1, and BI0104 is the
details in the course.
" It's a hybrid be-
tween what a biol-
ogy major would
take, and what a non
major would take;' he
declared, "BI01ll is also meant to
be a general class, because it's a.GEN
ED class, anybody who takes it at the
college should be able to get science
credit. BI0104 is meant to be aimed
at anybody that is not a science ma-
- jor, art major, business major, any-
thing like that:'
"Furthermore", he continued "it's
less intense technical stuff that we
go into in class, and is hopefully just

the things people
would find interest-
ing; germs, disease,
stem cells, sustain-
ability, how the
body works,
sexual re-
p r o d u c -
tion; all
a b 0 u t
people,
stead of animals
and plants:'
"The school
now offers vari-
ety. Our BIO 111
was a middle
ground for both
of those, we are
trying to devel-
op those things,
so that we have
true majors course, and things like
this for non majors;' he says.
"I think this is exactly what a lot
of students are looking for, espe-
cially if they get into morn, and
they're like this isn't what I am quite
interested in;' he continued.
Most collages have major's and
.non-major's level biology.
Some labs that students may look
forward to participating in include
how the enzymes in your saliva
work, eyelash mites under the mi-
croscope and human cells.
Also, the class teaches how the
microscope works, the ' scientific
theory, sustainability and our car-
bon footprint in the ecosystem.
"People who don't like biology
from day one, would be more inter-
ested in some of the things and that's
why we made it;' he concluded.
The course is now available in the
online catalog.
