• Are high-performance, interactive, stand-alone reports
• Enable users to interact with information when offline
• Can be highly formatted and “burst” to deliver personalized data for
each user
• Are authored in Report Studio

5. Active Reports
• Active reports are an extension of existing
Report Studio values and the IBM Cognos
platform.
• Users will continue to benefit from the
enterprise value of one version of the truth.
• New interactive control types in Report
Studio will serve as building blocks for
creating active reports.

6. Active Reports
• What is an Active Report?
 An Active Report is a Report Studio report
type that has an output as an MHT file.
 The MHT file output allows consumers the
flexibility of being able to run reports
while disconnected from the database.

7. Active Reports
• MHT files contain all of the report data
within the single file, so a consumer does not
need to access the database to interact with
a report.
• Consumers are able to explore the report by
resubmitting different prompt values and
rendering new data output.

8. Active Reports
• Because the information is in the MHT file
at the time the report is created, when
prompts are re-submitted the data is
rendered without having to go back and
access the database.
• An Active report can be generated in IBM
Cognos Connection as a HTML or MHT file
and saved locally with a static copy of the
data.

• This file is viewable in a web browser
independent of the IBM Cognos report
server.
• Active reports are built for business
users, allowing them to explore their
data and derive additional insight.

• Active Report Controls
 When an active report is created, there are two
types of controls available for use in the mht file
format:
► Static: Allows you to manually define variables
► Data driven: Have values that are determined by the
associated data item.
• There are many available tools for active
report controls. These controls are found in
the toolbox tab, and the list found in the
toolbox tab can be lengthy.

• To make it easier to locate those associated
with Active Reports, you can right-click in
the toolbox tab and click Active Report
Toolbox Items to filter the list of objects
that are applicable.

Active Report variables work with
the controls to add interactivity and
to control behavior in reports.

13. Active Reports
• You are able to specify a control’s selection
behavior or reaction behavior.
• Selection Behavior: When selecting one
control, the value of the active report
variable is set to the control selection value.
• Reaction Behavior: When selecting one
control, the active report variable specifies
how another control will react.
• There are three types of Reaction Behavior:
 Select an item in a control
 Filter an item in a control
 Enable a control
