British explorer Captain James Cook first established
European contact with eastern Australia. As such, the
area is also the first place where Europeans and the
indigenous Maori tribes encountered one another.

houses, conversations in the native language, and
painted Maori churches. On Mount Hikurangi, visitors
can see massive carvings depicting figures from
