To effectively negotiate the aging process it is important to have a unifying theory of disease and treatment. In this brief presentation we at Integrative Psychiatry review overarching principles of age-related disease and offer our version of such a theory.
• Aging is a disease which can be delayed, prevented, or even reversed;
• You are not a victim of your genetic endowment; and
• Chronic inflammation is a major cause and effect of aging and age related diseases of civilization.
Life stressors superimposed upon your unique genetic and biochemical makeup trigger, aggravate, and/or perpetuate the diseases of civilization that you are at risk for.
The biological imbalances that drive your particular diseases can be measured and so they should be measured. These imbalances include but are not limited to the following:
• Adrenal hormones (cortisol, DHEA);
• Neurotransmitters (norephinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, GABA, glutamate, etc.);
• Immune factors (hs-CRP, homocysteine, fibrinogen, cytokines, interleukins);
• Thyroid Hormones;
• Sex Hormones;
• Vitamins/Minerals/Fatty Acids;
• Growth Factors (BDNF); and
• Genetic Polymorphisms.
In order to help you craft and implement an integrated anti-aging strategy we strongly recommend testing of these mediators.

2. What We Believe
• Aging is a dis-ease which can be
delayed, prevented, or even reversed.
• We are not mere victims of our
genetic endowments.
• Chronic inflammation is the major
cause and the principle effect of the
diseases of civilization.
3. Not a haphazard, trial and error,
supplement/recipe/food du jour, jump on the
bandwagon approach.

6. Antecedents
Antecedents are
predisposing factors that
determine which diseases
you are vulnerable to as
you age. We have put
them into 5 categories:
“GULCH.”
G – Genes
U – Uterine Environment
L – Life Experiences
C – Choices
H – Habits

Triggers comprise acute
and chronic stressors
(life’s “slings & arrows”)
that precipitate or
“trigger” the DOCs you
are vulnerable to based
on your “GULCH”
antecedents.
