...Centerton Country Club & Event Center's Denise Sartorelli talks about The Big Day.
And with 20+ years of experience in the event planning business, (maybe you remember her from
Culinary Concepts?) she's very much at the top of her game making fairytales come true. If you've
been following us, you're probably at least a little bit in-the-know about this Sunday's Spring Bridal
Show at CCC. Denise and her team have been crazy-busy prepping for this special event, sure to be
a hit with the 155-plus brides who have registered.

Has the role of the wedding planner changed in the last few years?
Yes. Years ago only the elite had the means or opportunity to consider hiring a professional wedding
Get Notes via RSS planner. Today, many brides have wedding planners to ease the stress and time it takes to plan their
wedding. With women working or running big companies they have little time to see to every detail.
We are able to offer them our expertise on vendors, controlling their budget, and of course are
abreast of the top trends. We like to think out if the box. Weddings are no longer cookie cutter
weddings. We can bring a cohesive collaboration of professional vendors together who can work
together and execute the event seamlessly and within their budget, all the while bringing the bride
and groom’s vision of their special day to life!
What’s the most important piece of advice you can offer a bride?
Starting out, the bride usually has so many ideas about what she wants for her wedding. I tell her to
write down what’s really important to her and then we build the rest around it. I tell the bride & groom
to enjoy the day, no worries. All the planning is done. The day goes so fast I want them to enjoy each
and every moment. I also love to tell the bride to pause before she walks down the aisle to meet her
future husband. And to look at his face as he sees you for the first time. Priceless!
How do you help brides who are on a tight budget create their dream wedding?
I work with them by creating a custom menu that fits their specific budget and needs. I try to take the
most important or top elements they would like to see at their wedding and then create a picture
perfect wedding. If they have the flexibility, having their wedding on a Friday or Sunday day or night
is a big saving factor!
What are some of the biggest trends you see in weddings?
Photo Booths are big! Guests can have their pictures taken and then they get a picture strip and the
B&G get one strip put in a memory book. Another cool trend is having an artist come and paint a
picture of the bride and groom during the reception. It’s a great gift to give. Also splashes and pops of
color are making big headway. Tangerines, yellow, hot pinks, corals with black accents in floral or table
settings are very trendy. Adding up lighting around the room or on tables is a fantastic way to pull a
theme together and really set the mood for a party.
How do you think brides today are different from brides of even 10 years ago?
First, brides are more daring in their color and theme schemes. And with the newest technology
available at their fingertips, the bride has the ability to obtain unlimited resources and research
vendors and price compare. She can even order online and have it in a few days. I have a lot of brides
that take advantage of on line registry and RSVP’ing.
Do you see the role and participation on the part of the groom changing?
Yes and no. Years back the groom would leave a lot of the details to his pending bride. Today I see
grooms sitting down with the brides and playing a more active role in selecting the menu, bar and
entertainment.

Should guests still buy gifts?
Today I see older bride & grooms asking, in lieu of gifts, to donate to their favorite charity. But a gift
will always be appreciated, especially if the bride & groom are just starting out.
Cake: In or Out?
I love wedding cakes! It does seem that cakes are getting much more extravagant than ever before.
Different tiers, shapes, fondant, fillings, flowers and toppers… Go for it!
Stations vs. Sit Down?
Food Stations, grazing stations, small plates, or displayed stations can be unique and creative. It all
depends on the couple’s budget. Having stations allows your guests to mingle and interact with one
another. It also allows the caterer to showcase their talents and creativeness by using different table
shapes and heights, vessels, and floral elements to showcase their cuisine and creativeness.

2. It really depends on the couple’s vision on what they want to achieve. I always like doing stations or
small plates or shooters during the cocktail hour, then a sit down, French Plated Dinner service.
Shooters: small shot glasses with a soup like lobster Bisque paired with a mini grilled cheese served on
a small plate are a neat cocktail Hors d’ Oeuvre. Then topping the night with a Candy Bar Station or
decadent Chocolate Fountain with a Viennese Sweet table for dessert.
What’s the coolest way you’ve seen a bride arrive or just wed couple leave?
I was vacationing in the Bahamas and knew there was a wedding. Of course every caterer or planner
cannot resist the temptation to take a peak. The bride & groom each arrived separately soaring over
the blue ocean water in white and black helicopters to their beach ceremony. That was very cool! It
would not of surprised me if they rode off into the sunset in jet skis! LOL
Band, DJ, or iPod?
This is a personal preference. Bands are great but can be expensive if you’re on a budget. DJ’s work
well because you can customize your song preference and they have a bigger song repertoire to play.
iPods are another great way to supply music you love. But just make sure it’s appropriate for all your
guests. I always tell the bride & groom to make sure the music played during dinner is not loud. You
want your guests to be able to hear one another.
