Positioning for business:Surface Pro 2 – The laptop in the body of a tabletSurface 2 – So much more than a tablet
Surface RT– So much more than a tabletSurface Pro - The tablet that’s a powerful laptopTalk track:Surface RT is so much more than a tablet– it is lightweight, offers up to 8 hours of battery life, and turns on instantly which makes it the ideal tablet for people on the go or customer-serving kiosks. With Office Home & Student 2013 RT built in, and the growing number of touch applications in the Windows store, you have apps that are good for your business or organization.Surface Pro is the tablet that is also a high power and performance PC – with the Intel core i5 processor and Windows 8 Pro, it offers what you expect from a tablet plus the speed and capability power users need and runs touch and Windows desktop apps. Surface Pro offers corporate connections for mobile users and the ability for IT to have the level of control they need. PRESENTER NOTE: Be sure to edit price with local prices

This diagram illustrates our architecture. It looks simple but it covers a great range of capabilities.First of all, our on-premises applications will continue to work and run like they always have. All the applications, regardless of where they run, use the same corporate Secure Token Server (or STS) for claims-based authentication. Any employee accessing an application, whether from inside the corporate network or from the internet will go through the same authentication process – and all the complexity behind that seemingly simple statement is handled by Active Directory Federation Services.On-premises applications that need to access cloud-services, or cloud-based applications which need to access on-premises applications are securely integrated using Azure connect which allows us to extend the corporate domain into the cloud. In the case where we need to communicate with third-party applications we use the service bus. The service bus is a service which is part and parcel of Windows Azure and which allows secure connections between Azure applications and other apps. It works because a 3rd party application behind a firewall can go out (firewalls are designed to keep rogue apps OUT, not keep internal apps from going out) – and connect to the service bus, and an Azure application can connect to the service bus, and at that point we have two known end-points which can be connected. With those pieces in place we have everything we need to make extensive use of cloud applications while at the same time continuing to use our on premises applications – and where it makes sense use hybrid applications which use a combination of the two.Segue: Our journey has started, but as I mentioned earlier we have a long way to go – this is not an instant journey.
Slide talk track:This “hybrid design” is the core of Microsoft’s Cloud OS vision. You benefit from a common and consistent approach to development, management, identity, virtualization and data – spanning on-premises to cloud – your cloud, a service provider cloud and Microsoft’s cloudThis is powerful because we will deliver a flexible development environment for the developer so that it can code once and deploy anywhere; deploy on premises, deploy out to a partner cloud, deploy out to Azure cloud. But they only have to write the app once on the power of our .NET framework. Unified management is our ability to use System Center, sitting in your datacenter to administer all the automation scripts to manage and pool the resources of that datacenter. Well while you’re looking in that pane of glass, to be able to provision and move VMs, objects, data from your datacenter out through a service provider or out to Azure for bottomless storage, for redundancy, for disaster recovery. Common identity is a third element of our consistent platform, using Active Directory group policies that you’ve already set up in your enterprise. You merely get the benefit of those group policies extended through Active Directory Federation Services and Azure based Active Directory, so that the group policies you set, extend out to the cloud automatically. You don’t have to manage multiple federation common identity across different clouds. Integrated virtualization is a fourth area. You no longer have to have a third part bolt on to virtualize your compute. Not only are we giving you compute capability, virtualization of your compute capability imbedded in Windows Server, we’re giving that to you around software defined networking and around virtualization of storage, also. Lastly, being able to have a complete data platform where your data can reside anywhere across these three clouds in a seamless way is a value proposition that’s huge as well. You can optimize your storage costs in this dimension. All that capability integrated in how we think about the complete data platform for a customer across all clouds. This gives you the ability, from a one view, to manage apps and data beyond your own private cloud -- to a partner cloud -- to a public cloud -- in a consistent way. Removes complexity so you can focus on answering those business questions and apps Helps you be very flexible in thinking about how you deploy your apps across the three clouds

As I have mentioned several times, we have been set a goal by our CIO – become a Real-Time IT Organisation. Only then can IT move at the speed of business. Only then can we truly partner with the business rather than respond.Windows Azure will allow us to be more agile. There are obvious way in which it speeds up our work. Purchasing cycles, which can take weeks or months, essentially disappear since we can provision new capacity at the drop of a hat. Setup and configuration issues are now much smaller and easier. As we move more and more services and capabilities into the cloud those services become available to all our teams. Let me give you a small example: we use active directory for authentication. From the very beginning of our journey to the cloud Active Directory Federation Services have been in place, and internal processes for utilising ADFS services have been in place. Teams moving to Azure now have one less thing to worry about – and we are now able to access corporate applications from inside or outside the corporate network with a single sign-on process. As we build more and more shared services in the cloud and make them available to all project teams their work will become more focused on their particular application or area of expertise rather than on plumbing or infrastructure. We pivot from work on maintenance to adding business value.Cloud architecture has other implications. When you have the ability to scale individual components of an application we provide more flexibility for our operations teams to optimise an application for performance or cost. With a well-designed Azure application we can be very specific. Let me use the Auction tool application as an example. In the early part of the auction we scale the web-roles up – we can provide more web-roles to provide a better user experience. At the end of the auction the workload on those parts of the application which deal with closing and auction and notifying the winner (and the person donating the item) have more work to do so we scale them up, while there is no work at all for those components of the application which deal with adding new items to the auction – so we scale them down. Now – this kind of adjustment of resources and performance works only if the developer has designed and written the application to provide the operations team with the right levers and buttons to push and pull. As a result it makes more sense to for operations people and developers to live and work in the same teams. This partnership has become known in the industry as DEVOPS. During the month of October the entire MSIT organisation was transformed around process-centric teams rather than functional groups. We now have the right people working together so we avoid the complication and confusion that can arise when developers build and test an application, and then throw it over the wall for operations to deal with. Those teams are now disciplines within the Devops profession in our world. We have also moved our engineering organisations from a waterfall methodology which is oriented around larger projects with a longer development cycle, to a SCRUM methodology which is oriented towards shorter, more frequent, more predictable releases. We have a more agile platform, out teams are optimised for taking avantage of the platform and the flexibility it affords, and our processes are oriented towards speed and flexibility – those are all components which will get us to our goal – Real-Time IT.Segue: The organisation is prepared. What does our execution environment look like?
