Two days later his teacher phoned his
mother to tell her that John was misbehaving.
"Wait a minute," she said. "I had
Johnny here for two months and I
never called you once when he misbehaved."

Wanting to earn some money, Cletus
decided to hire himself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a
wealthy neighbourhood. He went to
the front door of the first house and
asked the owner if he had any jobs.
"Well, you can paint my porch. How
much will you charge?"
Cletus said, "How about 50 dollars?"
The man agreed and told him that the
paint and ladders that he might need
were in the garage. The man's wife,
inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does he
realize that the porch goes all the way

The man replied, "He should. He was
standing on the porch."
A short time later, Cletus came to the
door to collect his money. "You're
finished already?" the man asked.
"Yes," Cletus answered, "and I had
paint left over, so I gave it two coats."
Impressed, the man reached in his
pocket for the $50. "And by the way,"
Cletus added, "that's not a Porch, it's a
Ferrari."

A dietician was once addressing a

Pop Up Office in Templemore
College of Further Education
How does a College combine the
teaching of the practical skills with the
theoretical knowledge of a course such
as Administration? This was the question posed for the teachers of this Level 6 FETAC/QQI award in
Templemore College of Further Education (formerly St. Sheelan’s College) last August.
Work experience with a local business
organisation seemed to be the obvious
answer. However, what business is
going to allow a student to implement
change in some of their systems and
figure out what worked well or badly.
Local business organisations are very
obliging and helpful when taking students for work experience but what
was required was a step too far.
The solution was to set up an office in
the college. The students named this
the “Pop Up” office and its function is
to provide secretarial and administrative services for staff in Templemore
College. What a success in terms of

training for the students. They have
complete control of this office and the
services it provides. They hold meetings with their teachers to discuss
progress and any issues that arise.
They can implement the theory they
are learning in class.
Many of the students in this course
have worked previously but found
themselves unemployed in recent
years. They find this approach to
teaching has greatly improved their
learning experience and their self confidence. They are currently organising a trip for their own class as well as
the Sports and Recreation and Tourism with Business and Heritage
courses. We will let you know about

Templemore College visit Sporting Limerick City
The sports and recreation students
from Templemore College of Further
Education (formerly St. Sheelan’s
College) recently visited The University Arena Sport located in the
grounds of the University of Limerick. They met with Neasa Fahy O’
Donnell, Senior Executive Sports
Manager who brought them around
the facility and answered their questions on the running of such a state of
the art complex. On their tour they
saw Munster icons such as Paul O’
Connell, Keith Earles and Connor
Murray. Students also viewed the set
up involved with the
upcoming Riverdance show as part of
the City of Culture.
On leaving the UL
Sports Arena they
went to the home of
Munster Rugby –
Thomond Park. The

famous grounds notorious for the All
Blacks victory; who now have a museum and tours available. Students
took part in a tour of the stadium,
which involved looking at the typical
diet of a rugby player, undertaking a
reaction test and attempting throwing
a line out. They also got to step onto
the field of play even though the
weather was not favourable!
Students returned to Templemore
weary from their excursion but delighted with the knowledge and experiences gained from the day!

Hot on the heels of its very successful run so far in The Gaiety Theatre,
A Skull in Connemara comes to
Thurles!
This dark dark comedy is the middle
play from Martin McDonagh’s Leenane Trilogy and it follows the story
of Mick Dowd, a local man who each
year takes on the task to disinter the
bones from graves over seven years
laid to rest to make way for new arrivals. This task is much to the discomfort of Mick’s neighbours and
rumours are plenty regarding what he
does with the bones and skulls once
disturbed from their resting place.
The play opens on the days leading
up to yet another removal. However
this year Mick has the task of digging up his own late wife Oona. This
sparks further controversy given the
fact that his late wife died in very
suspicious circumstances. Add into
this mix, nosy neighbours, troublesome teenagers and an ambitious
Guard and it provides a rollercoaster
ride through McDonagh’s black
comic world, this play is hysterically
funny. You will find yourself laughing at the most inappropriate of jokes
and identifying with Mick, the belligerent alcoholic.

Computing Industry Continues
to Offer Great Job Opportunities
by Sarah Butler.
A recent study carried out by the
HEA (Higher Education Authority)
highlights the high employability
rate among computing graduates in
Ireland . “The Class of 2012” survey
which will continue to monitor computing graduates’ employability status over a five-year period, reveals
that 52% of level eight graduatesfound suitable employment in Ireland while an 72% of level 9/10
(Master’s / Ph.D level) graduates
had found work here. An impressive
90% of level eight graduates found
their courses relevant in terms of
gaining employment.
These figures augur well for the
future and show promising results
for those who may be studying , or
interested in studying, computing in
Ireland at present. The high employability rates go some way towards
refuting the claim that there has been
a massive brain-drain among science
graduates from Ireland in recent
times .
With the imminent deadline for
CAOapplications looming , it may
be time to think about choosing to

study computing at third level. The
high rate of employability in this
sector testifies to the increasing
demand for computing graduates in
the workplace.

at the Department of Technology at
LIT Thurles noted “ This study
should give confidence to students
considering applying for a computing programme through the CAO.
There are good job prospects and
this is confirmed by a recent ForFás
report which indicated that there
would be over 44,000 positions
available within the computing industry between now and 2018. At
LIT Thurles campus we offer programmes in Computing, Software
Development, Games Design and
Development and Computer Services

No-one ever sets out on a journey
without checking their route,
train/plane times, so why would you
not spend time finding out who you
are, before starting out on your career
search. While we all know some aspects of ourselves in terms of our
strengths/weaknesses, we do need
help in identifying the more hidden
aspects of our personalities. While
the same career may suit two different personalities it will be different
aspects of that career that suit both
types.
If you do not know what to do with
your life two things can happen, you
do nothing about it, keep worrying
and giving out or you do something
about it and move off the starting
point. The right career enhances your
life .It is personally fulfilling because
it nourishes the most important aspects of your personality. It suits the
way you like to do things and reflects
who you are. It lets you use your innate strengths in ways that come naturally to you and it does not force
you to do things that you do not do

well(at least not often). The secret of
career satisfaction lies in doing what
you enjoy most. Some are lucky to
discover this early in life, but a lot of
us are caught in a kind of psychological wrestling match, torn between
what we think we can do, what others feel we ought to do, and what we
think we want to do. In short it is always better to concentrate instead on
Who You Are and the rest should fall
in to place.
The conventional approach to career
direction looks at your abilities , your
interests, and values .All these are
very important but your personality
has additional dimensions that need
to be recognised. The more aspects
of your personality you match to
your career search the more satisfied
you will be in your chosen career. In
other words you should always try
and do What You Are.

Series 4, no. 17. Anxiety. Laughter,
family support, valuable workbooks
on alleviating anxiety, stress diary.
Any lighthearted activity helps to relieve anxiety. Being with witty people
or watching comedies is a great help to
soothing our anxiety. We know that
laughter relaxes the whole body, relieving physical tension and stress,
leaving your muscles relaxed for up to
45 minutes. It boosts the immune system, decreasing stress hormones and
increasing immune cells and infectionfighting antibodies. Laughter triggers
the release of endorphins, the body’s
natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of wellbeing. It improves the function of
blood vessels and increases blood flow,
the very opposite of what stress and
anxiety do. But, the severity of the
anxiety is an important consideration
also. If a person is almost paralysed by
anxiety, looking at comedies will not
have much of an effect. That type of
anxiety must first be eased by other
means first.
Family help is also important. Therefore, it is vital for family members to
understand what anxiety is, and how
debilitating it can become. It is difficult
to be around anxious family members,
but patience and understanding is essential. Telling an anxious person to
‘cop on’ or ‘it’s only in your mind’
increases the anxiety, and makes the
sufferer feel misunderstood at the very
least.
The two workbooks by Martha Davis
and Edmund Bourne (Anxiety &Phobia
Workbook and The Relaxation and
Stress Reduction Workbook (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook, respectively) also contain some effective
techniques to ease anxiety and stress.
Davis suggests that we draw up a
schedule of recent experience. This
exercise will help to identify stressors
and see a pattern perhaps. It shows
techniques for dealing with them. One
exercise looks at stress and anxiety
arising from life changing events. You
are invited to write these events down.
They might include problems at work
with your boss, changes in your sleeping, eating problems, personal problems, and recreation habits. Perhaps
you are having trouble with your inlaws, sexual difficulties, illness or injury, loss, change in residence, marriage,
divorce, separation, retirement, change
in working hours, and so on. You compile your own sources of anxiety and
you can compile a score that shows just
how stressful your life is. Following
this, you can use the information you
have written to counteract the possible
anxiety and stress that may arise. For
example, remind yourself of the
amount of change you have experience
in the last year. Think about how it has

affected you, and how you can adjust.
Do all of this slowly and carefully, and
also look at your successes. Be empathic to yourself, and acknowledge what
you can change and what you cannot.
Next draw up a list of how you cope
with anxiety and stress. Some of these
may be beneficial and others destructive. So you might use the following
coping strategies - getting support of
friends (beneficial), overeating (destructive), drinking too much (destructive),
smoking
(destructive),
withdrawing (destructive), getting a
hobby (beneficial), having a healthy
diet (beneficial), and so on. By doing
this you will see whether your coping
strategies are positive or damaging,
and you will be able to eliminate the
damaging ones, and find other helpful
ones.
A stress/anxiety awareness diary is a
very good idea. You have five headings for this record, and an entry might
be as follows

This will show a pattern of behaviour
and reactions to stressful events. It will
also show you where you store it in
your body. Your awareness will increase and you will be able to release
the anxiety through relaxation exercises, such as walking, swimming, listening to soft music. Self- hypnosis seems
to be an effective way to ease anxiety.
I suppose that we may be frightened of
hypnosis because it seems that we have
no control. I would have no fear of
self-hypnosis as explained by Martha
Davis. She outlines how you might
master and practise it on pages 83 to
97. It does not take long to master it.
