Becky was 73 and just got her first
computer. After her son spent over 2
hours teaching her how to use it, she
was sure she knew everything there
was to know about computers. Un-
fortunately though, one day she
couldn’t get it to start so she prompt-
ly called an IT guy to come over and
take a look at it. The IT guy managed
to fix the issue in a few minutes and
was on his way. Becky was proud
when she overheard the IT guy on
the phone with his boss telling him
about the issue, she was sure it meant
it was a serious issue and she was
sure she took care of it the right way.
“Excuse me if you don’t mind me
asking,” asked Becky to the man on
his way out. “I couldn’t help over-
hearing you on the phone with your
boss. What exactly is an Id ten T
problem? Just so I can tell my son.”
The man smiled, took out a pen, “it
stands for this: I-D -1-0-T”.

There were many highlights of the
BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2016.
The school was extremely proud of
the 6 awards that we received.
John Ryan received the Road Safety
Award for his project ‘Arrive Alive’
and also came 4th in his category.
Jack O Meara received a special Tea-
gasc award for his project on the
‘Mastitis metre’; he also took third
place in his category. Rachel
O'Connell and Eimear Darcy re-
ceived a prize for the best presenta-
tion in their category. Their project
was the ‘Sun Burnt Horse’ . Tara
Mockler, Eimear Slattery and Emily
Meagher were fourth in their catego-
ry and received a highly commended
award for their project ’ Equine Col-
ic Detector’.
Other students that participated were
Megan Tierney, Gillian O Meara and
Niamh O Brien with their project
’Artism’ ; also Nicky Cooney and
Anthony Ryan with their project
‘Safe Watch’.
The students had many media com-
mitments. They featured in the BT
press releases, Irish Examiner, Irish
Times, local Tipperary press as well
as a live interview with Tipp FM.
President Michael D. Higgins
praised the great work presented by
the students. They received visit's
from many guests including T.D’s,
the French ambassador and many
others. Students have been offered
visits and work experience with In-
tel, IFCO, DCU equine hospital and
many others.

Skillnets – the national agency re-
sponsible for funding and support-
ing training networks – has
announced details of a new training
fund worth nearly half a million
euro (€450,000), aimed at assisting
private sector businesses to grow,
by addressing their current and fu-
ture skills needs.
A group of businesses from the
same region, or specialising in the
same sector, can collectively apply
to develop a Skillnets training net-
work, and draw down funding sup-
port for the development and
delivery of training. Businesses can
be of any size, from a sole trader to
multi-national, and the fund will
also be open to existing industry
federations, industry bodies or en-
terprise groups.
Speaking about the training fund
Brendan Mc Ginty, Chairman of
Skillnets, said: “It is a progressive
time for Tipperary enterprise, with
an increase in the number of people
in employment, as businesses look
to expand. Having the appropriate
skills, including addressing future
skill needs to deal with this expan-
sion, is vital for sustainable devel-
opment. The success of our open
call for Skillnets training networks
last year, which resulted in the es-
tablishment of 11 new training net-
works, indicates the growing
demand among businesses for rele-
vant and innovative solutions to
address skills shortages in the
workplace. Skillnets is pleased to
announce another new fund for
Skillnets training networks this
year, so that more enterprises look-
ing to expand their business can be
assisted in skills development.”
The total fund available for new
networks is €450,000. Skillnets op-
erates under a joint investment
model whereby participating train-
ing networks can apply to receive
up to 50 per cent of the cost of
training from Skillnets, and the re-
mainder of costs are funded in cash
contributions from participating
businesses in the training network.
The first closing date for the new
funding call is 15th March, with a
second closing date in November
2016.
Skillnets already supports 63 train-
ing networks in a wide range of
sectors from manufacturing to in-
formation technology and food /
beverage and mixed sectoral train-
ing networks across many regions.
One of the networks set up from
last year’s funding is Aviation &
Aerospace Skillnet, which provides
training to the aviation and aero-
space sector. Part 21 Design Ire-
land, based in Ireland’s aviation
hub in Shannon, is a member of the
network.
Mick Malone, Head of Airworthi-
ness at Part 21 Design Ireland said:
“Ireland is one of the leading play-
ers in the international aviation in-
dustry and in order to keep our
competitive edge in a global mar-
ketplace, our staff need to be con-
tinually up-skilled to meet these
demands. Courses offered by the
Aviation & Aerospace Skillnet
form an essential part of our ongo-
ing staff training. This type of rele-
vant, practical training is invaluable
as it ensures our staff are up-skilled
in areas critical to our business.”
According to Brendan McGinty: “A
key element of the Government’s
growth and employment strategy is
ensuring Ireland has the quality and
quantity of skills to attract, retain
and grow job opportunities and in-
vestment. The collaborative nature
of training networks enables mem-
bers to be more responsive to
changing market needs, working
together to identify and meet future
skills requirements in their indus-
try, so their business stays ahead of
the curve.
Investing in the skills of existing
staff can result in immediate cost-
savings and significantly add value
to the business, leading to such ad-
vantages as improved productivity
and increased profits. Employers
can also enjoy additional benefits
of staff loyalty and commitment,
which can help achieve greater em-
ployee retention levels in an in-
creasingly competitive jobs market.

complished with relatively low in-
vestment through the Skillnets
training network model.”

The eagerly anticipated All-Ireland
maths challenge that has taken Ire-
land by storm for the past two
years is back, with a prize fund of
€20,000 for students and schools.
Registration for students and
teachers throughout Tipperary is
now open for LearnStorm Ireland.
Originally called MATHletes, the
challenge was started in 2014 by
technology entrepreneur Sean
O’Sullivan and Khan Academy, a
not-for-profit on a mission to pro-
vide a free, world-class education
for anyone, anywhere. The goal
was to increase students’ compe-
tence and confidence in maths, and
to date, 326 students in Tipperary
have participated.
Nationally over 13,000 primary
and secondary students have com-
pleted more than 4 million minutes
of learning maths skills. The suc-
cess of the Irish challenge inspired
Khan Academy to take the chal-
lenge to the USA as LearnStorm in
2015.
MATHletes is returning in 2016
with a new name: LearnStorm Ire-
land. Starting in January, students
in Tipperary can earn recognition
for themselves and their schools by
mastering maths skills on Khan
Academy. At the same time,
they’ll build confidence to help
them learn anything. LearnStorm
is free, fun and accessible from
anywhere.
Powered by Khan Academy,
LearnStorm is coming to Ireland
with help from The O'Sullivan
Foundation and is being delivered
locally by Camara Ireland. James
Tynan from Khan Academy, said
“LearnStorm helps students not
only to get excited about maths,
but to cultivate higher order skills
about learning that will permeate
other life challenges, too. We
know that the more you grapple
with something, the more your ca-
pacity expands. LearnStorm is for
everyone as it rewards students for
hard work and mastery, no matter
if they’re learning basic arithmetic
or advanced calculus.”

solving the recurring flooding cri-
sis.
Before we spend millions of euros
on downstream knee jerk hard engi-
neering false solutions, especially
before we make any decision to go
dredging rivers, which will only
send the problem further down-
stream as many other EU countries
have discovered at great cost. Those
countries who adopted dredging
strategies are now reversing their ill
judged decisions. We also face the
very real prospect of heavy EU
fines and penalties which could add
further to the cost of short term
quick fixes.
Andrew St Ledger, the League PRO
says " We can all agree there is a
need now to find wise long term
solutions to fix flooding, one part of
this solution is to work with nature,
farmers, and local communities to
restore our degraded uplands, riv-
ers, streams, wetlands and flood
plains so that they can perform their
natural regulatory function to their
optimum capacity ".
There is an urgency now to pay
heed to recent UK scientific re-
search in comparable upland situa-
tions to Ireland. The UK Pontbren
project, conducted by Bangor uni-
versity in Wales found that water
was absorbed 67 times faster by
native woodland than on grass. The
Pontbren project of 1000 ha was a
farmer led approach to sustainable
farming in the uplands.
To date they have planted 12,000
native trees, 5% of the area, rein-
stated 26.5km of hedgerow and cre-
ated ponds covering 5.4 acres as
well as restoring wetlands which
act as natural reservoirs. The re-
search found that if all the farmers
in the catchment followed their ex-
ample, flooding downstream would
reduce by 29%. Full reforestation
would reduce the flooding by 50%
or more.
The development of an alien tree
farming forestry model in Ireland's
uplands with its non native shallow
rooted trees, soil compaction by
clear-felling with heavy machines,
deep vertical drains, and hundreds
of kilometres of heavy duty roads,
has also compounded the flooding
issue. Sending large amounts of
water and silt down hill and ripping
the river and stream banks along the
way adding to the flooding prob-
lems in the lowlands.
St Ledger went on to say
" Rain is landing on soil with no
sponge ability in tree plantations, it
is then channelled into deep vertical
drains and cascading at speed head-
long down our hills and mountains,
flooding the low lands ".
" Why is it with all the advisors and
consultants available to Ministers
for advice, that this no brainer, low
cost basic solution on our doorstep
continues to be overlooked ".
"The Pontbren trials provide us
with a sustainable and cost effective
blueprint for restoring our fragile
uplands using natural methods, en-
suring a reduction in flooding, a
future for small farmers and wild
life, with knock on benefits for lo-
cal communities and is in the na-
tional interest ".
The Woodland League are actively
seeking cross party support for this
initiative having already engaged
with a number of interested TD's
and Senators who recognise the
merit in this common sense natural
solution.

achievements.Chloes participation,
determination, and in particular her
love of running is something she and
her family are so proud of .Chloe has
represented herself, her school Scoil
Naomh Cualan,Borrisoleigh,
Templemore A.C, and her county.
In January 2015, Chloe was part of
the Tipperary Under 10 relay team who won Silver
medals in the Munsters . In October 2015 , in
schools cross country Chloe brought home an
individual gold medal and a bronze team medal for
Scoil Naomh Cualan, Borrisoleigh .Chloe then
went onto to take part in theunder 11's County
Cross country running her longest distance to date
at 1500metres and came in 8th winning a bronze
medal. Next came the cross country under 12
relays where Chloe was on the Templemore A.C.
team winning gold medals.
In November Chloe ran in the Munster Cross
country, in Beaufort Co. Kerry under horrendous
weather conditions ran a great race, coming 69th
overall and came in 7th for Tipperary qualifying
her to go onto the Nationals in Waterford, which
for a beginner was great.
Munster B's was the next day, Chloe ran a
fantastic race in Cappawhite and came 3rd
winning an individual bronze medal and also a
bronze team medal. On December 6th, Chloe ran in
the Nationals in Waterford, coming in 84th overall,
and came in 3rd for Tipperary, her best race to date
seeing her make a huge improvement from the
start of the season.Chloes last run for this cross
country season will see her represent Tipperary in
the National B's in January 2016

Aglish Drama Group have the pleasure of presenting “
The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley “ over three nights
next weekend on Friday 22nd , Saturday 23rd & Sun-
day 24th January in Aglish Hall . Door will be open
for 7.30 with the show starting at 8.00pm .
Aglish Drama Group reformed last year and
had a very successful run of four nights . The
play is written by the very talented Jimmy
Keary and centres around Gabriel Foley played
by Aglish man Noel Hogan. Gabriel Foley is a
middle-aged bachelor farmer, who lives with
his elderly mother Aggie played by Annemarie
King. He has been unlucky in love many times,
much to his mother’s frustration. She thinks
she’ll never get rid of him. Then he meets up-
market, Hazel Myers played by Claire Starr and
joins the posh drama group in the nearby town
in order to romance her.
He is unaware that Chrissie McCabe played by
Deirdre Darcy – a cheerful countrywoman,
who comes in to help him and his mother – fancies
him. By the time Chrissie makes her feelings known
to Gabriel, he has already got Hazel’s attention. He
and Chrissie decide to try going out together. He tries
to let Hazel down gently, but Hazel is not a woman to
give up easily. The cast also includes Sylvia Conlon
who plays Aggies Sister Lucy Lacey , Michael Torpey
as Liam Gavigan, James Heenan as Julian Delamere
& Pat Fox as Clive Snell. This year the play
is being produced by local lady Phil Quigley
, Phil is no stranger to local drama, Phil has
directed more plays in North Tipperary than
anyone else we know.

Anxiety

As mentioned, social anxiety can be
especially severe at the thought of
meeting strangers, and sufferers may feel
extremely self-conscious. This is an
extreme and crippling form of shyness (I
must say I like shyness in the normal
sense of the word. It is a lovely
characteristic). You may have heard it
said that man is the only animal who
blushes, and extreme shyness is at the
core of social phobia. Blushing is an
automatic response to feeling under the
spotlight. Some become so embarrassed
by the blushing that it restricts their
social life and their ability to relate to
others. I have read the stories of over 700
people who are tormented by blushing,
and it is sad that it inhibits their life to
such an extent.
Blushing is a physical response showing
embarrassment, or even shame, and
comes from a rush of adrenaline, the
hormone that gets us ready for flight or
fight when we are in danger. Part of the
effects of adrenaline is to allow the veins
to widen, to help in the flight or fight
reaction. This is what happens to your
face when you blush, and possibly flush
(sweat). The veins widen, and your face
reddens as a result.
So, there seems to be sensitisation
coming from a fear of danger. The
sufferer experiences high anxiety and
becomes over-nervous. I imagine the
roots of this may lie in childhood (if
there is not an underlying medical
cause). There is a phobia about blushing
called erythrophobia. If you wish to learn
more about erythrophobia you might like
to read a very interesting article called
Patients With Erythrophobia (Fear of
Blushing) Show Abnormal Autonomic
Regulation in Mental Stress Conditions
by Kurt Laederach-Hofmann and his
colleagues.
There are several other medical
explanations for blushing, and there is
some controversy about the effectiveness
and side effects of surgical interventions
to prevent it. The principal intervention
is Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy
(ETS). You can investigate this on the
internet for side effects.
There are many other suggestions for
alleviating blushing, but I do not know
how effective they are. Some doctors
recommend cutting down on coffee,
drinking plenty of water, drinking
alcohol slowly, refraining from eating
spicy food or high carb food. Other
sufferers found that using a high factor
sun cream and giving up dairy products
helped. Some, but not all, have been
helped by EFT (Emotional Freedom
Techniques). You can find out all about
this on the internet, and you can
download a self-help manual on it. You

While it does not get to the root of the
problem, which is vital as far as I am
concerned, it is possible to camouflage
blushing. Many sufferers find
Dermacolour very effective in
concealing blushing. No doubt, your
pharmacist probably stocks this product.
There is also a product called
Dermablend.
I must admit that drinking red wine
makes me flush. I also find that being in
a warm room makes my face red. I feel
that stress and rushing affects me and
makes me blush. I noticed this in
particular on the night my book on the
death of my youngest child was launched
in Dublin. It was an extremely stressful
situation, and looking at photographs
later, I noticed how red my face was.
However, this is only an occasional
problem for me and does not bother me
at all.
So why is it that if I am beetroot red I am
not bothered, while others feel so
restricted that they avoid going to
celebrations and functions. I am
convinced that looking at how we think
is a good way to go about easing the fear
of blushing or blushing itself. I always
say ‘so what. My face is red. What about
it’. In other words, I minimise the fear
and the complaint. Catastrophising
increases our sensitivity and makes the
matter worse. However, as I have
already said, it takes up to a year of
practising changing our negative
thoughts before a change takes place.
Some sufferers find that meditation
helps; it increases powers of
concentration, and helps to divert their
thinking from their problem.
