2. The Design Process
We DAG team opted for:
The Plan:
Activity 01-03 11/04/14 @ UPH
Activity 04-05 14/04/14 @ 200 RB
Activity 06 17/04/14 @ Kampong
Pondok Pucung, The research site
Activity 06-07 19/04/14 reflection
3. Hello, here we
are, the DAG
Team doing the
2nd Part of HCD
Workshop:
Discover!
4. The most interesting part is:
No.3 Immerse yourself in context -
why? Because that’s the best way to
build empathy; and No.4 Seek
inspiration in analogous settings-
why? Because its fun and surprising,
its ensure our creativity and push us
to think outside the box!
6. 1st attempt:
How might we encourage the children
to keep their kampong’s clean?
IDEO’s example No.3 sounds suitable
for our personal challenge project
Final attempt (after many tweakings):
How might we encourage good garbage dumping
habits among undeserved children in Kampong
Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA?
7. DAG team Yay and Nay
Martin, Architect, Lecturer (loves to chat and writes, too
systematic – complicated); Rakyan , Environmentalist (gadget
man, business oriented, limited mobility); Phebe, Interior &
Sustainable Design (good in organizing, to the point, difficulties
to be prompt, hesitate to take a lead); Ruth, Architect, Builder
(good in management, realistic, not to systematic); Dona, Visual
Communication and Graphic Designer (jovial tends to be
hilarious, crazy ideas, needs a long time for materializing ideas)
This is indeed the most difficult part for us
We need a Fundraising. How?
It’s all depend on the prototype. The amount of the budget, the funders, the
technology, the other people (expert, volunteer, etc.) involved, travelling etc.
We have rough estimation, but Ruth will calculate it in details
Who else does the DAG team need?
Children Psychologist, Community-Based Anthropologist,
Craftsman, Product Designer, Garbage Recycle Expert
Project Timeline (2014)
Start 11th April
Discover 11th – 19th April,
Ideate 21st -26th April

Deadline, 17th May,
Our Commitment
At least 2 sessions/ week
4 hours/session
8. What DAG team know
The community targeted don’t care!
That it was difficult to building up awareness,
especially when they know but they opt to
ignore!
They don’t have a role model (parents and
children seem to be alike).
They don’t have knowledge about ‘the use
and abuse’ of garbage.
They don’t know that garbage has an
economical value.
They don’t think that it is their responsibility
They don’t have social control or formal
regulation
BUT (amazingly)
They care about education, thus they must be
care about their future
They have a competition spirit, especially to
economic condition improvement
They are familiar with Gadget and Technology
They are connected
What DAG team don’t know and wanted to know more
How to relate Children Playing Activities with Garbage Treatment to be an
Exciting and Fun Activities?
How to improve Social Behaviors & Relationship? – especially for Children & Mom’s
How to make Garbage Management to be Economically Viable?
THE CHALLENGE
How might we encourage good garbage dumping
habits among undeserved children in Kampong
Pondok Pucung, Tangerang, INDONESIA?
9. Community Members

In-Context Immersion

Garbage Dumping Site in Kp. Pd. Pucung;
Playground in Malls or Dept. Store
Informal Basketball Court in Serpong
Experts
Children Psychologist
Community Based Anthropologist
Local Garbage Compound
Garbage Picker
Analogous Research
Starbuck – the reward system
Local Market – the cleaning system,
the variations, the unique character
Street Playground – or whatever
place turn into playground by the
children
10. Start easy
Build casual conversation,
Personal Data, Living Period
Then go deep
Always connect to garbage
problems and children activities
Memory, Past – What was then?
How’s the situation back then?
Reality, Now – Ask them to make
comparison between the past and
nowadays situation
Imagine, Future – Ask them to
imagine ideal situation for their
kampong’s
Why don’t we conduct the research - asking the questions WITHIN AN EVENT!
(that way we hope to get an honest answers from the community)
So, DAG decide to CREATE an event, using the ‘NOW’ popular playing activity
done by the children within the community: playing KITE
Thus, we make ‘COLOR YOUR KITE’ day (already permitted by the community leader) on
THURSDAY, 17th April, 2014, while in the same time conducting our research
Then comes
OUR CRAZY IDEA
