2. Why is Food Inspection Mandatory
Now?
Maintain health in community
Prevent introduction of pests into the U.S.A.
Ensure food is safe to eat
Prevent outbreaks of diseases, like:
Cholera
Salmonella
3. The Regulators
FDA (Food And Drug Administration)
USDA (United States Department of
Agriculture)
4. Impact of “The Jungle”
Upton Sinclair’s book “The Jungle” led to
significant changes in the way food was handled
in the U.S.A.
5. Pink Slime
Also known as LFTB (lean finely textured beef)
Additive to ground beef
USDA stated "The process used to produce LFTB is safe
and has been used for a very long time. And adding
LFTB to ground beef does not make that ground beef
any less safe to consume."
Overall healthy
7. Recalls
Why recall an item?
Unsafe to release to public due to:
Tampering
Bacteria
Viruses
Parasites
8. Food Safety in Other Countries
Many countries trying to make food borne
illnesses less problematic
Huge public health problem
Many diseases result from poor food safety
The WHO stated that in 2005 1.8 million people
died from diarrheal diseases. A huge number of
these cases are because of contaminated food
and drinking water
Hi. I am doing my power point on Food Inspection and safety.
Why is food inspection mandatory now? All food is required to be inspected before being released to the public. This process prevents sickness, ensures that food is safe to eat, and helps prevent the introduction of new pests into America. Many diseases have been traced to unsafe food. Some of these diseases include: Cholera, Salmonella, e.coli and listeriosis infections. Listeria is a bacteria commonly found on meat, dairy fruits and vegetables.
The Regulators. The USDA and FDA regulate the food and drug distribution. The FDA started as the Bureau of Chemistry in 1906 and became the FDA in 1930. It is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety. The USDA began in the 1860s and was focused on research and discovery of new agriculture in the U.S.A. By the early 1900s, the focus of the USDA shifted to food inspection.
Impact of “The Jungle”. In the early 1900s, Upton Sinclair created a huge uproar when he wrote a book called “The Jungle,” which was about the unsanitary and appalling conditions of the meatpacking factories. President Roosevelt said, "A law is needed which will enable the inspectors of the [Federal] Government to inspect and supervise from the hoof to the can the preparation of the meat food product.” In 1906, the Meat Inspection Act was passed. This law allowed U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors to stop poor quality or mislabeled meat from entering the market. Roosevelt also signed a law regulating foods and drugs on the same day he signed the Meat Inspection Act. The Pure Food and Drug Act regulated food additives and stopped misleading labeling of food and drugs. It also enforced milk pasteurization, meat inspection, and enacted an inspection system for foods sold by interstate commerce. This law was the beginning of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).These two laws made the public feel safer about the food and drugs they bought.
Pink Slime. Today consumers wonder about the safety of Pink Slime, also known as lean finely textured beef or LFTB. It is an additive to ground beef, which consists of finely ground beef scraps, sinew, fat, and connective tissue . Even though this name is off-putting to some, the USDA says that the product is completely safe. The USDA stated "The process used to produce LFTB is safe and has been used for a very long time. And adding LFTB to ground beef does not make that ground beef any less safe to consume.” This product has been around since 2001 and has most likely been in the beef you have eaten over the years.
The state of California’s restaurant inspections in Los Angeles County require every restaurant to follow certain health and safety regulations to protect the public. It is mandatory that every employee wash their hands before returning to work after using the restroom. Also all places that serve food, in Los Angeles County, must put up a sign in their window visible to everyone that states the score they received on their health inspection. Their percentage is based on how well they complete the Los Angeles Public Heath Department’s standards.
When food, drugs, or other products are recalled it means that they are not safe for public consumption. This could be because they have been tampered with or they carry dangerous pathogens.
Food safety in other countries. Many countries are trying to prevent food borne illnesses that come from poisoned or unsafe foods. The way to prevent these outbreaks is to inspect the food before selling it. This is a huge public health issue. The World Health Organization or WHO stated that in 2005, 1.8 million people died from diarrhea-related diseases. A large amount of these cases are caused by contaminated food and drinking water.
