2. An atmosphere is a layer of gases that
may surround a material body of
sufficient mass, and that is held in place
by the gravity of the body. An
atmosphere may be retained for a longer
duration, if the gravity is high and the
atmosphere's temperature is low. Some
planets consist mainly of various gases,
but only their outer layer is their
atmosphere.
3. Air pollution is the introduction of
Chemicals, particulate matter, or
biological materials that cause
harm or discomfort to humans or
other living organisms, or cause
damage to the natural
environment or built environment,
into the atmosphere.
4. Sources of air pollution refer to the various locations,
activities or factors which are responsible for the
releasing of pollutants into the atmosphere.
Smoke and carbon monoxide from wildfires
volcanic activity, which produce sulfur, chlorine, and
ash particulates
"Mobile Sources" include motor vehicles, marine
vessels, aircraft and the effect of sound etc.
There are many other causes of air pollution. When you look at
air pollution, people cause much more than they believe. In fact,
the numbers for individual families is staggering. For example,
the average family in the United States contributes to ozone
causing pollution in the range of 325 pounds per year.
12. SMOG
Smog is a type of large-scale
outdoor pollution. It is caused by
chemical reactions between
pollutants derived from different
sources.
Cities are often centers of these
types of activities.
13. It’s more dangerous than
the outdoor pollution,
because we do everything in
enclosed environments where
air circulation may be
restricted.
There are many sources of
indoor air pollution: smoke,
cooking and heating
appliances, and vapors from
building materials.
14. The health effects caused by air pollution may
include difficulty in breathing, wheezing, coughing
and aggravation of existing respiratory and cardiac
conditions. These effects can result in increased
medication use, increased doctor or emergency
room visits, more hospital admissions and premature
death. The human health effects of poor air
quality are far reaching, but principally affect the
body's respiratory system and the cardiovascular
system. Individual reactions to air pollutants
depend on the type of pollutant a person is exposed
to, the degree of exposure, the individual's health
status and genetics.
15. There are several effects of air
pollution on the environment
which are varied and profound.
1.Global Warming
2.Depletion of the ozone layer.
3.Greenhouse effect
16. Global warming refers to the rising average
temperature of Earth's atmosphere and
oceans and its projected continuation. In
the last 100 years, Earth's average surface
temperature increased by about 0.8 °C
(1.4 °F) with about two thirds of the
increase occurring over just the last three
decades. Warming of the climate system is
unequivocal, and scientists are more than
90% certain most of it is caused by
increasing concentrations of greenhouse
produced by human activities such as
deforestation and burning fossil fuel. These
findings are recognized by the national
science academies of all the major
industrialized countries.
17. It is another result of
pollution. Chemicals
released by our
activities affect the
stratosphere.
Releases of CFC from
heating, aerosol cans,
refrigerator equipment
removes some of the
ozone, causing "holes”.
18. It generally comes from
the build up of carbon
dioxide gas in the
atmosphere. Carbon
dioxide is produced
when fuels are burned.
In this type of pollution
sun rays go into the
atmosphere and they
are trapped by
greenhouse-gasses. So
the temperature on the
19. switch from coal to cleaner fuels - use natural
gas
reduce energy use, improve energy efficiency
burn less coal, use lower sulfur coals. Coal
gasification
source removal: No smoking
source modification: more efficient stove design
pollutant removal: filters
Do not burn leaves in your garden, put them in a
compost pit.
Make sure that the pollution check for your
family car is done at regular intervals.
Stay indoors as much as you can during days
when pollution levels are high.
If you must go outside, limit outside activity to
the early morning hours or wait until after
sunset
