Design for extremes creates value for all

Having the ability to set legible body copy is an absolute must, and we’ve come a long way with web typography since the dawn of web design. However, it sometimes feels like we have allowed the lack of variety prior to the rise of web fonts to dampen our creativity now that thousands of web fonts are at our disposal. Have usability conventions and the web’s universality steered us away from proper art direction? Have we forgotten about art direction altogether? Let’s look at ways we can push typographic design on the web further, beyond the status quo of today.

Have you imagined jamming with a band using only HTML, CSS, and JavaScript? Using the Web Audio API, Websockets, and a little bit of creativity, I presented an experiment using multiple devices communicating with each other, and playing music using only a web browser. Já imaginou montar uma banda usando apenas HTML, CSS e JavaScript? Usando Web Audio API, Websockets, e um pouquinho de criatividade, mostrei um experimento de como múltiplos dispositivos podem se comunicar e tocar música direto no navegador.

Ever wondered how to get rid of that spaghetti, single-filed JavaScript code? Wouldn't it be nice if you could write maintainable modules, easily test them, port them to different projects, handle its library dependencies, and have them decoupled from other modules? In this talk, we'll see how using the AMD API and an event-driven design will help taming an application's JavaScript code and scaling it to the future and beyond.

Typography is the foundation of any website. We are increasingly aware of typography all around us. We avoid or spend less time on sites with hard-to-read text. We have favorite fonts (and will passionately defend them)! No matter your role on a project, having a better understanding of typography will help you to communicate with clarity. There are more ways than ever to implement custom, beautiful typography on your websites (and beyond). But a new plethora of options can make the selection process even more difficult. This session will teach you the foundations of typography, help you navigate this sea of typographic possibilities, and understand why good type should be your primary focus. We'll also explore ways that typography affects your user experience on the web and beyond.

We are stuck between a cool idea and tons of unknowns. We know that the availability, accuracy, and nature of our data will directly affect the quality and outcome of our project. Are you tired of using the same old fonts in your Web designs? The type you use can say as much to your audience as the actual words on the page, but until now, Web designers have had an extremely limited palette of fonts from which to choose—essentially, Arial (yawn), Times (yawn), and Georgia (yawwwwwn). Design is about overcoming the limitations of a medium, and Web design is no different. In this session, Jason will show you how to use fluid typography, browser-safe fonts, and type on images to create robust scalable designs to achieve great typography without resorting to typing in images or Adobe Flash. You’ll also learn how to use CSS to download any font you want to use in your Web designs, and to use downloadable fonts, despite the limitations of some browsers.

It’s been said that web design is 95% typography. So as a web designer, getting the typography right is a must. Today with the growing popularity of web fonts and modern CSS techniques, this task has become easier, but it never hurts to have all the help you can get with something so critical. That’s why we’ve rounded up some useful tools to help you create better web typography. Communicating via typefaces. Fonts and layout.

Enterprise Knowledge’s Urmi Majumder, Principal Data Architecture Consultant, and Fernando Aguilar Islas, Senior Data Science Consultant, presented "Driving Behavioral Change for Information Management through Data-Driven Green Strategy" on March 27, 2024 at Enterprise Data World (EDW) in Orlando, Florida. In this presentation, Urmi and Fernando discussed a case study describing how the information management division in a large supply chain organization drove user behavior change through awareness of the carbon footprint of their duplicated and near-duplicated content, identified via advanced data analytics. Check out their presentation to gain valuable perspectives on utilizing data-driven strategies to influence positive behavioral shifts and support sustainability initiatives within your organization. In this session, participants gained answers to the following questions: - What is a Green Information Management (IM) Strategy, and why should you have one? - How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) support your Green IM Strategy through content deduplication? - How can an organization use insights into their data to influence employee behavior for IM? - How can you reap additional benefits from content reduction that go beyond Green IM?
