I know some of you are newbies to GIS but many of you are what I like to call “mappy geeky” and GIS is near and dear to your heart. As many of you know, “mappy geeky” is an important part of my life. I’m going to BRIEFLYshare how you can make a difference, bringing that mappy geeky passion of yours into the lives of our students.I promise I’ll keep this very short because we have a big program today.
Let me introduce you to a couple of people. This is who you can talk to about how to make a difference.
This single sentence is a good summary of GIS at UWM. I hope you are a speed reader because we are moving ahead.…but you can also find this on our website, that easy to remember URL in the upper right. UWM dot EDU slash GIS
Your donation can support the department in general, nourish research, or help students expand their educational experiences. Here are ways you can do that
To encourage and award the contributions made by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee students to the development of geographic information science and technology, the GIS Council at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee initiated an annual student GIS project competition in Spring 2003. In 2008 a separate category was created, the best undergraduate award. This is our 10th Anniversary! This is a good example of your contribution making a difference. State funds cannot be used towards awards. We are absolutely dependent on your financial support to make these awards possible.
To support our students with funding for travel to conferences
Awesome opportunities to be exposed to new trends in GIS, to network... And How awesome was this! Chatting with Jack Dangermond! Jay Feiker, now a UWM GIS Certificate recipient and GIS Data Coordinator at MMSD.
To recognize our students with awards or scholarships
To purchase equipment or other items such as GPS units(GIS Club mapping the Estabrook Ultimate frisbee course)
To support invited speakers
To support our membership in organizations such as UCGISMembership involves UWM faculty and PhD students in defining GI Science and Technology’s research agenda.
Support GIS Day!Whether you come for the Keynote speakerThe hands-on workshopsPresentations by GIS ProfessionalsOrNetworking Over Hux’s favorite pizza
And general support of the GIS Council and GIS Certificate Program. These people are happy because They are the recent GIS Certificate Recipients And They’ve just had a big bowl of Hux’s Red Chili !The GIS Certificate Program is over 20 years old, with the first graduates finishing in 1993. Many of the people in this room have been a part of the UWM GIS Program
Please consider supporting the important work of the GIS Council and supporting our students, Our students are your future employees and co-workers.Now, Your pizza today was sponsored by ATC and GITA WI Chapter. FREE PIZZA! Thank you to ATC & GITA!But I’d like you to consider a long standing SE WI GIS tradition when eating pizza, I’m asking you to consider throwing in $5. With enough $5 contributions we can support things like sending a student to the Esri UC, buying a GPS unit and funding awards for the GIS Student Competition. With that in mind, I’m creating a special “I had ‘za with Hux” webpage on the UWM GIS Day site for our special contributors. I need you to fill out the small card on your table. Your support can make the difference.
Thank you! Your support can make a difference and bring “Mappy Geeky” into someone’s life.I had ‘za with Hux ---on your tables now!
