3. External Conflicts:
Man Versus Man
This is perhaps the most obvious
and most played on in literature.
There is usually one protagonist
and one antagonist in a story. The
two are in conflict or
disagreement over some one or
something in the story.
In the novel, Ralph and Jack are
the two who are at conflict over
who should lead the boys.
Ralph represents order and
civilization while Jack represents
chaos, evil, and savagery.

4. Man versus Nature
This form of conflict is
demonstrated when a character
must fight the elements of nature
in order to survive. In the novel,
we see several instances of this
form of conflict:
• Finding food
• Making shelter
• Making fire
• Hunting
• Finding rescue

Man versus Society

6. Man versus Self
A classic example of internal
conflict is when Piggy tries to
rationalize his participation in
Simon’s murder. He struggles
with the fact that he did what was
unthinkable and convinces
himself it was an accident.

threat of the beast.

beast, the boys all believe it
