GraphQL is a powerful data querying and manipulation language, presenting itself as an alternative to REST in API development. This session is aimed at introducing the motivation behind GraphQL, and describe how it acts as an alternative to using REST when it comes to building data-driven applications. The importance of GraphQL APIs on serverless architectures will also be introduced, and the session will also demonstrate how GrapQL based APIs can be built with the help of AWS AppSync. This will segue the talk into the benefits of AppSync, specifically talking about the ability to access the AWS software infrastructure services while building your applications. AWS Lambda functions will be highlighted, and the session shall conclude with a demonstration on integrating Lambda functions into the GraphQL schema, a discussion of the problems of using Lambda functions with GraphQL, and the solution to the issues that surface.

Presented at Advanced Technology Days 14, Zagreb, Croatia - Microsoft Graph binding extension for Azure Functions enable input and output to Graph entities and makes it quite easy to access data in Microsoft cloud from Azure Functions code. The aim of this session is to drill down into available bindings and provided function templates for Microsoft Graph and demonstrate how they can be used to build Graph-enabled serverless applications. We will also discuss implementation of common Microsoft Graph data access patterns (webhooks, batch, working with custom data) with Azure Functions.

Operating stateful applications is a challenge and Elasticsearch clusters are no exception. At Zalando, the search department has a long-term history of operating large-scale Elasticsearch clusters consisting of 100s of nodes. In this talk Mikkel and Oliver present how Zalando utilizes Kubernetes and the operator pattern as introduced by CoreOS, to reliably and cost efficiently operate large-scale Elasticsearch clusters. The talk will walk through how the Elasticsearch operator was designed, what problems it solves and how building it from the bottom up allowed getting it in production fast, gather more learnings and later extending the featureset to make it less manual to operate and reducing the cost of the overall infrastructure by introducing auto-scaling. While the talk revolves around running Elasticsearch, the ideas presented also apply to running other types of stateful applications in Kubernetes. Additionally, the Elasticsearch operator presented, can be used by anyone. It is planned to be published as open-source solution in the future.

The team builds tools for managing data feeds, creates SDK for engineering integration, and builds rules engines and consoles for fraud detection. An example of fraudulent behavior could be that of an individual who pretends to be both the driver and passenger, and makes cashless payments to get promotions. Recently, the team launched GrabDefence as a SaaS service to start helping external clients in Southeast Asia to combat fraud in their business. Billions of fraud and safety detections are performed daily as there are millions of transactions happening every day and thus storing and querying the data of a database in real-time is not feasible. So come listen to us how we use Apache Kafka to detect fraud successfully!

CELUM set out to develop its own reactive graph driven architecture to provide the best user experience for workrooms.net. Hear our story on how we ventured into the areas of Graph Databases, Data Modelling as well as Reactive Programming and melted them into a graph-centred reactive architecture. We put it to the test and built our production-ready cloud-based enterprise application atop it. Learn about lofty goals and unexpected surprises that we managed to turn into happy endings. Building upon our experiences will become your edge once you develop your own graph-centric cloud application. The unique aspects presented are a type-safe query language atop Gremlin available within back-end and front-end, our inheritance-aware data model and the seamless streaming of graph data to the front-end as it becomes available. Finally, drawing upon these capabilities, we look at Live Queries that notify clients when query results become stale and thus both improve the UX and reduce the system load.

The Open Landscape of Geospatial Information: Open data, open source, open standards Presented at ASPRS GeoTech 2013 conference: http://www.asprspotomac.org/geotech2013/ Abstract: The many dimensions of "open" provides users with higher quality geospatial information. Open Standards ensures interoperability to information whether its served by proprietary or open source software. Open Source software benefits the development of open standards and leads to a business ecosystem that includes more providers, more partnerships and more customers.[1] In the end the user does not care if the code is open or proprietary. Users care about access to data and the quality of the data. Open Data has advanced with the recent policies from GEOSS Data-CORE [2] and the US Open Government Initiative [3]. Open Earth Observation data from government sources benefits industry and users. Open standards, Open source and Open data can result in higher quality information. The fusion of data from multiple sources results in higher quality. Fusion is possible based on multiple data sources that can be interrelated [4]. Improving Data Quality through knowing the uncertainty and the provenance of derived information is dependent upon an open landscape of geospatial information. This presentation will dive into a development team’s use case for choosing MongoDB as their spatially enabled NoSQL solution. The talk will also cover how the integration of GeoServer can expand the accessibility of your data. GeoServer is the open source implementation of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards and a core component of the Geospatial Web.

The Geographic Information System (GIS), industry is booming, especially with the continued reliance on online maps and the rise of location-aware mobile devices. GIS tech can be one of the key players in the mobile internet, big data, and the internet of things, and is an essential tool for the next generation of the global IT industry. Yet, the GIS community is not prepared. With all the data available, GIS experts lack an off-the-shelf solutions to manage the growing volume of spatial data. Relational spatial databases (RSDB) were the leader in this field for decades, but RSDBs have failed to innovate to handle massive volumes of data coming in at high velocity. Fortunately, MongoDB a useful tool for this challenge, but needs some tooling to create a connector to the GIS tech ecosystem. In order to bridge the gap, we built a pipeline to comply with the architecture of the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL), so that MongoDB can work with most of popular GIS tools such as OpenLayers, Mapserver, GeoServer, QGIS, ArcGIS and others with ease. In this talk, I'll go through this pipeline tool and showcase some examples of how you can use this in your next application.
