1. Perseverance

2. Jonas is the pale-eyed Eleven who is chosen to become the next
receiver of memories in the community. His Assignment is the most
honored and respected one, and Jonas has the intelligence,
integrity, and courage needed to become a Receiver. As he begins
his training with The Giver and slowly understands the truth about
the community, however, Jonas feels that things must change.
Planning together with The Giver, Jonas decides to flee the
community forever in order to unleash all the memories that have
been kept from the citizens for so long.

3. Overcoming Adversity
 Jonas overcame adversity by gaining
knowledge from The Giver and being able
to break away the controlled society that
Jonas knew.

4. Ruth Becker
Miss Ruth Elizabeth Becker, 12, boarded the Titanic at Southampton. She was travelling with her mother
Nellie, brother Richard and sister Marion from India to Benton Harbor, Michigan (ticket no.230136,
£39).Ruth later recalled that after the collision a steward initially told her mother "... We've had a little
accident. They're going to fix it, and then we'll be on our way ...".
While the boats were loaded a steward placed Richard and Marion in one of the boats (#11), and then said
"Well that's all for this boat!", at which Nellie pleaded to be allowed in as well, saying "Please let me in
this boat! Those are my children!" She was allowed in but Ruth was left on the Titanic, at which point
Nellie screamed "Ruth! Get in another boat!!". She eventually got into Lifeboat 13.
After the sinking, gave her blanket to one of the stokers, who had on only a sleeveless shirt, and shorts, for
working down in the coal bunkers, and was now shivering in the night air.
After the Carpathian arrived in New York, Nellie Becker told the reporters at Pier 54 "Don't ask me anything.
Ask Ruth, she'll tell you everything."
After the disaster Ruth attended high school and college in Ohio, after which she taught high school in
Kansas. She married a former classmate, Daniel Blanchard, and after her divorce twenty years later, she
resumed her teaching career. In the years after the disaster she refused to talk about the Titanic, and her
own children, when young, did not know that she had been on board. However, after her retirement,
when she was living in Santa Barbara, California she began speaking about it, granting interviews and
attending conventions of the Titanic Historical Society. In March of 1990, she made her first sea voyage
since 1912, a cruise to Mexico. She died later that year at the age of ninety. Her ashes were scattered
over the spot where the Titanic lies.

5. Character 2 Perseveres Through
Adversity
Ruth Becker perseveres through adversity by trying to get Twelve-year-old Becker boarded
the Titanic along with her mother Nellie, four-year-old sister Marion and one-year-old brother
Richard as second-class passengers on April 10, 1912 at Southampton ,England. Shortly after
the ship's collision with the iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on April 14, Ruth recalled that a steward told
her mother, "We've had a little accident. They're going to fix it, and then we'll be on our way.“2
Realizing that the ship was seriously damaged, Nellie took her children up to the boat deck. But
told Ruth to go back to her cabin and get blankets.
James Moody helped load Marion and Richard into lifeboat 11, but wouldn't let Nellie in. It was
only after pleading with the steward that he finally consented, but Becker was not allowed in. Her
mother then screamed to Ruth telling her to get in another lifeboat. Ruth later got tossed into
lifeboat 13 by Sixth Officer James Paul Moody.
Nellie and her three children were all picked up by the rescue ship RMS Carpathian . Although
it was a struggle to find her mother on the ship, Becker finally managed to. They arrived in NYC
on April 18. Soon after their arrival, the Beckers took a train to Benton Harbor. Michigan .
Nellie's husband Allen finished his missionary work in India and joined his wife and children in
1913.

6. Victor From Seventh Grade
 In the story seventh grade Victor likes this
girl named Teresa but he is to scared and
shy to talked to her. So victor takes French
to impress her, but it goes bad.

7. Perseveres Through Adversity
 Victor over came adversity by coming clean
with Teresa. He also overcame adversity by
not being shy and scared to talk to her. So
he told her the truth that he was lying about
all that stuff and he toke French classes
just to impress her

8. Reflections
Jonas overcame his adversity by gaining knowledge
from the giver.
Ruth Becker overcame her adversity by trying to get
