1 DYNANAV THE ROAD FORWARD
2 Introduction Effective Cockpit Resource Management is the key to safety while addressing the need for greater productivity. This will be the primary focus of this presentation. I am Reg Moen, President of DynaNav Systems Inc. and the manufacturer of the DynaFlight–AirAg II, a GPS based guidance, data gathering and mapping system.
Background Many studies have been conducted of late focusing on the work environment, stress and challenges of a Pilot in his daily activities. We have categorized them in the following areas: Cockpit Resource Management (CRM) Ergonomics Situation Awareness (SA)
Cockpit Resource Management What is Cockpit Resource Management? C.R.M. is the effective utilization of all available resources, information, equipment and the human ability to achieve a safe and efficient flight operation. (Vicky Quiles)
Ergonomics Ergonomics, also known as human engineering or human factors engineering, the science of designing machines, products and systems to maximize the safety, comfort and efficiency of the people who use them. (Encyclopedia Encarta)
Situation Awareness Situation awareness is one of the most critical and challenging features of a Pilot’s job. SA can be thought of as an internalized mental model of the current state of the flight environment. This integrated picture forms the central organizing feature from which all decision making and action takes place. A vast portion of the Pilots job is involved in developing SA and keeping it up to date in a rapidly changing environment.(SA Technologies Inc. – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University)
Summary The three previous topics can be summarized in the following manner; CRM – Use of all Resources, information and equipment necessary to achieve a goal Ergonomics – Design of Machines, Products and Systems to maximize comfort, safety and efficiency SA – Determining the need by understanding completely the current status on a continuous and acutely accurate basis and acting on it
The Road Forward What we have reviewed as applied to the Air-Ag Industry
9 Issues in our Industry 1.	Safety and how new technologies in our field can contribute. 2.	The need for greater accuracy and efficiency in operations, increased production, improved profits and reduced operating costs.
10 Safety A major concern in today’s typical Air-Ag operation is Pilot overload. This is caused by increasing demands for performance and the complexity of modern aircraft and equipment necessary to achieve this goal. Anything that can reduce this stress will equate to a safer and more productive operation and that is the primary goal behind the design of our DynaNav products.
11 Safety There are three key components that we consider as essential in our design approach namely: Instrument positioning for safe, effective and informative scanning Uninhibited, uninterrupted and continuous forward and peripheral vision A control system that is familiar and comfortable to the Pilot without him being distracted inside the cockpit to either operate or view any functions.
12 Benefits With a better tool to do the job, many small gains will add up to significant bonuses at the end of season . Less stress on the pilot = improved health and quality of life Improved Accuracy = environmental gains and reduced cost of product Reduced time in the air = fuel savings Flexible flight patterns = less time in the air = less operating expense More Acres per Hour = more contract opportunities Improved Profit
13 How DynaNav contributes towards CRM Lets review the DynaFlight – AirAg II The entire system consists of three components namely; The DynaViz“heads up”, display screen The ErgoGrip control grip The DynaByte processor unit Total weight of the system including wiring and antennas, etc. is under 10 lbs.
14 The DynaViz“heads up”, display screen
The DynaViz“heads up”, display Intuitive - like driving down the center line of a road Simple – all information instantly available on screen Durable - Industrial Electroluminescent Screen = high visibility, all light conditions 15
16 The ErgoGrip control grip
17 The control ErgoGrip grip The familiar Pilot Interface Ergonomic design Complete control for the DynaNav System with: 5 Way Tophat control Enter switch
18 The DynaByte processor unit
19 The DynaByte processor unit Small by design – Powerful in Application Core Technology - Windows All in one integrated and adaptable technology
DynaNav System Benefits CRM Because of the intuitive nature of our products and an effective pilot interface, a short learning curve is achieved. This results in both efficiency and safety for the pilot. Ergonomic The design of our products provide for a comfortable and efficient cockpit installation that increases the OTW time for safe operations and more importantly, reduced stress on the pilot. SA Using the DynaViz “heads-up” display all of the necessary information is presented clearly and concisely which contributes to a timely and effective decision making processes.
21 Summary The topics that we have brought to you today are based on our company direction to provide a safe cockpit environment for you the Ag Pilot. The challenge to you the operators and pilots is to feedback your needs and concerns to us to be able to continually improve our products to meet this challenge. Each new solution that is introduced to the aircraft and pilot must be able to pass the tests to meet or improve CRM, Ergonomics and SA.

  1. CRM -
  2. Today, we are going to discuss one of the ways that technology can be applied in a safe manner and yet still help improve your productivity. As we move forward, there is continued pressure on the Aerial Applicator to improve the effectiveness of their application – faster and more environmentally friendly.
  3. In the process of increasing the effectiveness of the application, more and more technology is being introduced into the cockpit and aircraft system. Each new device and technology can introduce more cockpit clutter and more demand on the pilot, which means more stress. As manufacturers of this new technology, our responsibility is to integrate and interface this to the pilot in a manner that does not impede the pilots normal flight and control of his aircraft. At a minimum, we should be enhancing his operations and at the same time provide him with the tools for a safer operation.
  4. The ideal situation would be an effective Heads Up Display to present “all” and “only” the information that is required for the pilot to do his job safely and effectively.Just as important as this is for the pilot to interface to the equipment without having to be distracted by looking into the cockpit or removing his hands from the controls.
  5. Improved Accuracy means you can reduce line to line overlap and less striping.Window of opportunity for application is not flexible, however, more acres per hour will allow for more contract opportunities.
  6. Here we see the DynaViz display showing the Roadway navigationIt is located on top and middle of the instrument panel within full view of outside the aircraft.
  7. As seen here, the same as a typical road, I am flying a couple of feet to the right of the centerline of the swath. The screen presents all of the information that is necessary to completely cover the field in the way that you the pilot desires to accomplish it.The DynaViz display presents other necessary information that is provided by other integrated devices such as flow control laser altitude data, etc. This is done on a as needed basis and in a timely manner.
  8. It feels as good as it looks.
  9. Here we see the familiar pilot interface formed in a package called the ErgoGrip designed to ergonomically fit the hand thumb and trigger finger. All switches are military spec. With the thumb action tophat switch and the trigger finger Enter switch, the pilot has complete control over the DynaNav and his application. There are no other switches or buttons to operate the DynaNav
  10. It’s as good as it looks!!
  11. It may be relatively small, however, it is designed for future expansion and integration of other technologies.Since day 1, our system have used a Windows operating system and database driven to give unlimited capabilities. No DOS.
  12. Some of the industries we are in, besides agriculture, is in Forestry, Oil & Gas Exploration and Resource Mapping.
