The document outlines three initial ideas for a music video for the song "Clown" by Emeli Sande. The first two ideas focus on themes of domestic violence, either in a heterosexual or homosexual relationship. Specific scenarios and lines from the song that could relate are described. The third and chosen idea focuses on the theme of all forms of bullying. It explains how different types and ages of people can be bullied, and how the video aims to show this as well as the effects on both bullies and victims.

3 initial ideas
1. 3 Initial Ideas
I have come up with 3 ideas for my music video, Clown – Emeli Sande.
Each idea has a theme, an explanation on the theme, the theme being
related to 3 lines from the song and ideas for my making my music video.
I have chosen my 3rd idea , but my first 2 ideas helped me build and come
up with the ideas for the issue of bullying in relation to my chosen song.
This has helped me narrow down what I want to do within my video and I
have been able to creatively explore 3 major issues within modern day
society. Also my 3 ideas all have a theme because I know that I would like
to make a narrative music video which can create a sense of connection
with the audience.
2. Idea 1
Theme: Domestic violence within a heterosexual relationship
Why: Men and women can both be subject to domestic violence. There are many
forms of domestic violence such as Physical and Verbal. It is hard to know how many
people are a victim of domestic violence because many are too scared to report it. I
think a music video which features this issue may be able to help others who are
suffering get help and educate people on what is right and wrong within a relationship.
In relation to Clown by Emeli Sande:
“I’ll be your clown” = Victims are made a mockery of. Clowns are used for
entertainment aspects. Clown can be seen as puppets who are controlled for the
entrainment of others at their own expense.
“Behind the glass” = Most forms of domestic violence occurs within a closed
environment such as a house. Glass can imply that marks such as bruises are still clear
to see everyone on the outside. Glass can be broken suggesting that help is available to
those who feel isolated and trapped.
“I put make-up on my face” = Make-up can suggest hiding the physical scars/bruises
which are left after the result of physical violence. Make-up may be worn as the
individual has been told to change their identity.
Making My Music Video:
1-Man verbally abuses a women but she finds it hard to escape. Woman becomes
isolated from friends and family and begins to become ill.
2-Women verbally abuses a man because she has trust issues which do not lie with the
victim but oneself.
3-Physical abuse against a women because of the man’s jealously and over protective
nature. The woman stays with the man because she blames herself and is still in love
with the man.
4-Woman feels trapped and alone. Man controls everything. Nobody is aware. Sister of
the victim finds controlling text messages and follows the couple to help her sister.
3. Idea 2
Theme: Domestic violence within a homosexual relationship
Why: This is an issue which people don’t normally talk about within society due to their
lack of knowledge. This is because same sex relationships are relatively new within
modern day society. I think music videos are a great way to express issues which can help
individuals to become educated. Domestic violence traits can just be the same for same
sex relationships , but they go even more unreported. This is because the Pride
community already faces many issues and gay people may feel too scared to report
domestic violence as they don’t want to be judged.
In relation to Clown by Emeli Sande:
“I’ll be your clown” = Victims are used to be made a mockery of. Clowns are used for
entertainment aspects suggesting that the victim is being used at the expense of others.
“Behind the glass” = Most forms of domestic violence occurs within a closed
environment such as a house. Some people from the Pride community may already feel
isolated and may feel like they can’t seek help. Glass can imply that marks such as bruises
are still clear to see everyone on the outside. Glass can be broken suggesting that help is
available to those who feel isolated and trapped.
“I put make-up on my face” = Make-up can suggest hiding the physical scars/bruises
which are left after the result of physical violence. Make-up may be worn as the
individual has been told to change their identity.
Making My Music Video:
1-Two men verbally abusing each other within their relationships. Unclear on who is the
antagonist and who is the protagonist.
2-One girl uses the use of cyber domestic violence to track the whereabouts of her
partner
3-One man hits his partner because he was previously beaten up and feels it is
acceptable to take his temper out on the person he loves.
4. Idea 3
Theme: All forms of bullying
Why: This is a very important theme within society. People can be bullied at any
age in any establishment. There are many forms of bullying such as Cyber, Physical
and Verbal. However anyone can be a victim of bullying due to a number reasons. I
think this is a good idea for a music video because it can help educate young
people to speak out against bullying. I want to show that anyone can be bullied
and that it is wrong no matter what.
In relation to Clown by Emeli Sande:
“I’ll be your clown” = Make up worn to protect identity. Clowns dress up to make a
mockery of themselves. Clown don’t show a persons true identity. Being the joke
for the bully.
“Behind the glass” = Victims tend to hide away from the bully. Glass is still
transparent so suggests there is no escaping being bullied. Glass is a sharp object
so might reflect self-harm.
“I put make-up on my face” = Makes an alteration to the face so doesn’t show the
true identity of the victim. Wanting to change their own identity. About being
different. Being made to be something they don’t want to be.
Making My Music Video:
1-Bullying affects many different types of people, so I want to try and show this
2-Show that at any age you can be subject to bullying
3-Show many types of bullying
4-Show the effect it can have on the bully
5-Show the effect it can have on the victim and how they are constantly having to
change their identity.
