Solar powered plane’s round-the-world trip
1.
2. If your heads haven’t been in the clouds the past few weeks,
you might not have heard about the ambitious round-the-world
trip that a solar powered plane has undertaken.
Solar Impulse 2 is fuel free plan that will spend the next 5
months flying across the world’s continents.
What’s this all about?
3. Solar Impulse takes on the world
On March 19th Solar Impulse arrived in Myanmar, Burma after
completing the 4th leg of attempting to fly around the world using only
the Sun’s rays for fuel.
The aeroplane is a single seater and the journey so far has been
piloted by Bertrand Piccard, the project’s chairman, and Andre
Borschberg, the project CEO.
It has been predicted it will take Solar Impulse 2 up to 5 months to
return the United Arab Emirates, a route which will cross both the
Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
4. Where is Solar Impulse 2’s next stop?
The fuel free aeroplane has 12 scheduled stops and will next
fly to Chongqing in China, before going to Nanjing. The solar
team will then have to prepare to travel across the Pacific
Ocean to reach Hawaii.
5. Solar Impulse 2: the facts
The aeroplane’s wingspan is 72m, which is greater than 747
jumbo jets, but it only weighs 2.3 tonnes.
Using the 17,000 solar cells on top of the plane’s wings the
plane will be charged to fly during the day and lithium-ion
batteries will be used to sustain night-time flying.
