2. Steam is already the go-to platform for PC
gaming but now it has taken another step
towards total gaming domination by adding a
livestream feature.
This could challenge Twitch’s streaming
dominance as Steam has more than 100 million
active accounts, nearly double the 60 million
visitors a month Twitch has.
3. The livestream is called Steam Broadcasting and it allows Steam
users to watch the gaming sessions of anyone online in their
friends list.
There are three different ways to access the feature: a new ‘Watch
Game’ button can be found next to the names of gamers or in the
drop down friend panel that are online and playing. Pressing the
‘Watch Game’ option will open a new window that displays the in-game
antics, along with a chat panel.
Alternatively, an invitation can be sent by a friend who is already
playing.
The community section will have a new sub-section called
‘Broadcasts’ which provides a list of games currently being played
by random users.
4. Currently the livestream feature is part of the
Steam client’s beta program, which anyone can
opt into for free: click Steam and go onto
settings, then select ‘Steam beta update’ under
account.
At the moment only Windows 7 and 8
machines can access the feature, although
Valve is planning to extend it to Linux and Mac
users.
