2. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Twitter recently dished out a massive fortune - estimated to be $86 million - to
acquire an app called Periscope and social media start up Niche.
3. WHO HAS TWITTER PURCHASED?
Periscope is an iOS specific live video streaming app developed by Kayvon
Beykpour and Joe Bernstein. It also enables its users the ability to edit live
videos.
While Niche is a New York based enterprise playing the role of a middle man, by
associating social media stars with established brands to generate sponsored
content.
4. TWITTER SPLASHING THE CASH
The revelation of this extravagant purchase was made in a filing with US
Securities and Exchange Commission. The exact breakdown of the purchase is
not known, so we don’t know as to whether Periscope or Niche commandeered
the lion's share.
What's known though is the price paid is inclusive of stock options. When
contacted for details, the top dogs at Twitter chose to remain tight lipped about
their expenditure.
However the acquisition of both the app and the start-up didn’t come as a
surprise, as Twitter had made its intent obvious beforehand.
5. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TWITTER?
An educated guess is the primary reason behind Twitter’s acquisition of
Periscope is to bolster its video rendering capabilities.
Things are definitely looking up for Twitter, as the number of active users
reportedly exceeded an unprecedented figure of 302 million.
That’s a solid 14 million more users than the previous quarter!
The stock market share for the company is also reflective of the upward gains as
they rose to $47.37 showing an inflation of 33% from last year.
