Faith Explained: Understanding the Key Biblical Concept of Faith
1.
2. Hebrews 11:1–7
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped
for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by
it the men of old gained approval. 3 By faith
we understand that the worlds were prepared
by the word of God, so that what is seen was
not made out of things which are visible. 4 By
faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice
than Cain, through which he obtained the
testimony that he was righteous, God
testifying about his gifts, and through faith,
3. though he is dead, he still speaks. 5 By faith
Enoch was taken up so that he would not see
death; AND HE WAS NOT FOUND BECAUSE GOD TOOK
HIM UP; for he obtained the witness that
before his being taken up he was pleasing to
God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to God must
believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of
those who seek Him. 7 By faith Noah, being
warned by God about things not yet seen, in
reverence prepared an ark for the salvation
4. of his household, by which he condemned the
world, and became an heir of the
righteousness which is according to faith.
5. Term
a word or phrase used to describe a thing or to express a concept, especially
in a particular kind of language or branch of study
Definition of Terms is usually an annex to a work (book, research paper,
pamphlet,) either at the beginning or more likely near the end with a list
of acronyms, jargon, credits, etc. A glossary is another word that may
describe Definition of Terms. A list of words found in the paper, book, or
work that may need a further explanation to understand what that word
means rather than giving a definition within the work. Often time scholars
will fully understand the words used and don't need a definition
immediately in the work. However, there are times that clarification is
required and a section called "Definition of Terms" is beneficial and often
required, especially in a thesis or investigatory project. Medical personnel
use medical jargon but a layperson may not know what the term means,
and can easily look it up for clarification in the "Definition of Terms".
6. Words Matter!
So faith comes from
hearing, and hearing
by the word about
Christ.
Romans 10:17
1 Corinthians 2:13 which
things we also speak,
not in words taught by
human wisdom, but in
those taught by the
Spirit, combining
spiritual thoughts with
spiritual words.
Ephesians 5:6 Let no one
deceive you with empty
words…
7. A lot of variations
NIV
Now faith is confidence
in what we hope for
and assurance about
what we do not see.
KJV
Now faith is the
substance of things
hoped for, the evidence
of things not seen.
NAS
Now faith is the assurance
of things hoped for, the
conviction of things not
seen.
NLT
Faith is the confidence
that what we hope for will
actually happen; it gives
us assurance about things
we cannot see.
8. The set up
But we are not of those who shrink back to
destruction, but of those who have faith to
the preserving of the soul.
Hebrews 10:39
9. Now faith…
God is who he says he is
and will do what he
said he will do.
Needs an object
Gift from God
Independent of external
Propels to action
10. Spell it out
Theologian Marvin Vincent-Faith apprehends as
a real fact what is not revealed to the senses.
It rests on that fact, acts upon it, and is upheld
by it in the face of all that seems to contradict
it. Faith is real seeing.
11. Assurance-Substance-Confidence
To be placed under, a foundation
Legal term-forming the evidence of ownership
Hebrews 3:14 Makes us partners with Christ if
we hold on.
Hebrews 6:11 A hope for Christ’s return
Hebrews 10:22 We can draw near to God
12. In Context of Hebrews
In the case of this first-century Jew, his act of
faith in Messiah as High Priest would be the
title-deed which God would give him,
guaranteeing to him the possession of the
salvation for which he trusted God.
15. Things not seen
By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of
the king; for he endured, as seeing Him who is
unseen.
Hebrews 11:27
seeing him who is invisible
17. literally, “in this,” that is, “in the sphere and
exercise of faith.” The locative of sphere, “in
this,” approaches in meaning the instrumental
of means, “by means of.” “Faith has power to
see and realize the unseen, for the experience
of the fathers proves it.”1
18. Intellect
By faith we understand that the worlds were
prepared by the word of God, so that what is
seen was not made out of things which are
visible.
Hebrews 11:3
Understand-to perceive with the reflective
intelligence.
19. Genesis 1
By the word of the LORD the heavens were
made, And by the breath of His mouth all their
host…For He spoke, and it was done; He
commanded, and it stood fast.
Psalm 33:6;9

24. The story
Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the
father of Methuselah. Then Enoch walked
with God three hundred years after he
became the father of Methuselah, and he had
other sons and daughters. So all the days of
Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five
years. Enoch walked with God; and he was
not, for God took him.
