7. The “DOTS” model (Law and
Watts:1977/1996)
The ‘DOTS’ model is a four stage model of
career planning originally developed by Bill
Law and Tony Watts of the National Institute
for Careers Education and Counselling. It has 4
stages which are:
D: Decision Learning (Career Exploration and Decision Making)
O: Opportunity Awareness (Research Skills)
T: Transition Learning (Careers literature, Fairs, Work Experience)
S: Self Awareness (Self-Assessment)
8. The “SDOT” model
(University of Liverpool)
The SODT model can be simplified as follows:
Self Awareness Who am I?
Opportunity Awareness Where am I?
Decisions Making What will I do?
Transition Skills Where will I do it?
The DOTS Model (Adapted from Law and Watts 1977/1996)
10. HEA [Watts(2006)]
• Strategies for career management learning (specific
modules, cross-curricular integration, outside the curriculum)
• Careers services(individual and group guidance, information services,
employer liaison and placement services)
• Strategic directions (guidance, placement, curriculum, learning
organisation models)
• Implications – restructuring careers as academic service rather than
student service, separate teaching unit for career development learning
• Staff requirements – pedagogic knowledge & skills, strong
grounding in career development theory, academic empathy
17. Employability at King’s – a
definition and model
The Strategy is based on a three-tiered model of
support for students:
• Core elements – available to all students
through their programme
• Extra and co-curricula elements – optional for
all students
• Recognition and reward structures – to
acknowledge individual achievements
