 The USA now leads the world in spending on research and
development -- estimated to reach $328.9 billion the year 2005
from both government and private sources.

 One U.S. chemist's or engineer's salary is enough to hire five
Chinese chemists or 11 Indian engineers. In the year 2005,
China graduated 500,000 engineers; India, 200,000; and North
  America, 70,000.
 The U.S. trade balance in high-technology goods between US
and China fell from $33 billion in the black in 1990 to $24
billion in the red in 2004.

  • 9. Link between education and growth   Lessons  from  Asia      The USA now leads the world in spending on research and development -- estimated to reach $328.9 billion the year 2005 from both government and private sources.  One U.S. chemist's or engineer's salary is enough to hire five Chinese chemists or 11 Indian engineers. In the year 2005, China graduated 500,000 engineers; India, 200,000; and North America, 70,000.  The U.S. trade balance in high-technology goods between US and China fell from $33 billion in the black in 1990 to $24 billion in the red in 2004. MECHANICAL  PRODUCTION     •  For  Global  Compedveness,  the  use  of  Computer  Numerially  Controlled  (CNC)  Machines  has   become  the  order  of  the  day.  Most  industrial  machinery  in  Nigeria  is  imported.       •  This  is  because,  at  present,  the  EI  required  for  producing  these  machines  are  not  in   existence.  Efforts  are  therefore  under  way  to  have  a  sustainable  system  for  encouraging  a   progressive  increase  in  industrial  machinery  content.       •  This  will  require  an  understanding  with  manufacturers  and  industrialists.       •  Projects  can  start  with  local  producdon  of  spare  parts  and  gradually  graduate  into  the   design  and  fabricadon  of  individual  units  of  process  lines  and  complete  process  lines.       •  NASENI  is  already  working  with  some  industries  towards  achieving  this  goal.       Website:    www.naseni.org   ADDRESS: IDU INDUSTRIAL LAYOUT, Email:  nasenihq@naseni.org   IDU, P.M.B. 391, GARKI, ABUJA

  • 27. ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC  PRODUCTION:  THE  SMT  AND  PCB     •  Electronics   assembly   originally   used   point-‐to-‐point   wiring   and   no   substrate   at   all.   The   first   semiconductor   packages   used   radial   leads,   which   were   inserted   through   holes   of   the   single-‐sided   circuit  boards  already  used  for  resistors  and  capacitors.   •    Then   dual   in-‐line   packages   (DIPs)   were   invented   with   two   rows   of   leads.   These   packages   could   be   wave  soldered  along  with  other  components  such  as  resistors,  capacitors,  vacuum  tubes,  or  vacuum   tube  socket  leads.   •  The   present   methods   of   manufacturing   convendonal   electronic   assemblies   have   essendally   reached   their  limits  as  far  as  cost,  weight,  volume  and  reliability  are  concerned.   •      •  Surface   Mount   Technology   (SMT)   makes   it   possible   to   produce   more   reliable   assemblies   at   reduced   weight  volume  and  cost.  SMT  is  used  to  mount  electronic  components  on  the  surface  of  printed  circuit   boards  or  substrates.  Convendonal  technology,  by  contrast,  inserts  components  through  holes  in  the   board.   This   decepdvely   simple   difference   changes   virtually   every   aspect   of   electronics:   design,   materials,  processes,  and  assembly  of  component  packages  and  substrates.   Website:    www.naseni.org   ADDRESS: IDU INDUSTRIAL LAYOUT, Email:  nasenihq@naseni.org   IDU, P.M.B. 391, GARKI, ABUJA

  • 49. CONCLUSION   •  The   transforma4on   of   cra   to   manufacturing   has   been   possible   historically   as   a   consequence   of   the   infusion   of   technology.   It   becomes  impera4ve,  in  order  to  again  sustainable  development,  that   SETI   managers   need   to   adopt   best   prac4ces,   learn   how   to   apply   scien4fic   knowledge   vigorously   to   developmental   issues,   use   ICT   op4mally,   embrace   AMT   and   develop   the   relevant   human   capacity   to   meet  current  developmental  demand.     •  There   should   be   AMT   centres   in   all   the   Local   Governments   in   the   South   West,   with   100kg   and   250   kg   rotary   furnaces   along   with   CNC   Table  Top  Lathe  and  Milling  Machines.   •  All  the  small  AMT-‐Cs  would  be  linked  with  more  advanced  facili4es  at   PEDI,   Ilesa,   EMDI   Akure   and   the   AMT-‐C,   Rifus   Giwa   Poly,   Owo   for   more  complex  complex  components  and  opera4ons.   •  This   is   the   roadmap   for   fast   tracking   technical   and   technological   advancement  of  Eki4  State.   Website: www.naseni.org ADDRESS: IDU INDUSTRIAL LAYOUT, Email: nasenihq@naseni.org IDU, P.M.B. 391, GARKI, ABUJA
