The 1980 Olympics were held in
Moscow, Soviet Union. It were
also known as the ‘Games of the
XXII Olympiad’. These Olympics
were the first to be held in
eastern Europe. There were 5,179
athletes competing at these
Olympics, 4,064 men and 1,115
women.

The 1984 Olympics were held in Los
Angeles,United States. These
Olympics were also known as the
‘Games of the XXIII Olympiad’. The
official mascot of the Los Angeles
games was Sam the Olympic eagle.

4. Seoul-1988
The 1988 Olympics were held in Seoul,
South Korea. These Olympics were also
known as the ‘Games of the XXIV
Olympiad’. They were the second
Olympics to be held in Asia, the first
was in 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. In these
games 160 nations were represented
while 8,391 athletes competed. Their
motto is ‘Harmony and progress’.
5. Barcelona-
1992
The 1992 Olympic games were held in
Barcelona, Spain. These Olympics were
also know as the ‘Games of the XXV
Olympiad’. Because of the end of the
Cold War, these games were the first
without boycotts since 1972. There
were 9,356 men competing and 2,704
women aswell. 170 nations competed in
the Barcelona games. The official mascot
of these Olympics was Cobi the Catalan
Sheepdog.
6. Atlanta-1996
The 1996 games were held in Atlanta,
United States. These games were also
known as the ‘Games of the XXIV
Olympiad’. Atlanta became the fifth
American city to host the Olympic games
and the third to host Summer Olympic
games. The motto was ‘The celebration of
a Century’. That year the Americans had
the most medals with a total of 44 gold,
32 silver and 25 bronze.
7. Sydney-2000
The 2000 games were held in Sydney,
Australia. These games were special, not
just because it was in our home country,
but because it was a celebration of a
millennium. These games were also known
as the ‘Games of the XXVII Olympiad’.
The mascots for these games were Syd
the platypus, Millie the echidna and Olly
the kookaburra. Their names were
shortened from Sydney, Millennium and
Olympics.
8. Athens-2004
The 2004 games were held in Athens,
Greece. These were the first Olympics
held in Greece apart from in 1896. This
was also the first time that every
country with a National Olympic
Committee came to these Olympics. The
motto was ‘Welcome home’. The country
with the most athletes was the United
States of America with 586 people and
the Australia had the second most people
with 482.
9. Beijing-2008
The 2008 games were held in Beijing,
China. This was also known as the
‘Games of the XXIX Olympiad’. At there
Olympics, 43 world records were broken
and 132 Olympic records were also
broken. At the 2008 games, the record
was broken for the largest television
audience in Olympic history. Their motto
was ‘One World, One Dream’.
10. London-2012
The 2012 games are at London, United
Kingdom. These games are also known as
the ‘Games of the XXX Olympiad’. The
mascots are named Wenlock and
Mandeville. They are drops of steel from
the making of a steelwork in Bolton.
They are named after the Shropshire
town of Much Wenlock, and Stoke
Mandeville, a village in Buckinghamshire
