Dear Judges:
Hello, my name is Elspeth Male. I have enjoyed reading since I was a little kid and to this day I
love any opportunity to curl up with a good book. I would like to be able to translate this love
into a future career. Since I am the Co-Editor of our school’s yearbook, I thought I could take
those skills and use them to see if book editing is a job I would take pleasure in. I also plan to
attend the University of Georgia and major in English to help accomplish this goal.
For my senior project I edited and helped to publish my friend, Morgan Hughley’s, book. I
researched the advancements in publishing and learned how much the publishing process has
evolved since its beginnings in Germany in the 1440s. At the end of my research, I realized
publishing a novel electronically was just as important as publishing it physically. Morgan
struggled to finish her novel once school became busier so we were not able to print the book
through an actual publisher. However, Morgan and I were able to publish her novel, A Time for
Everything, in print at Kinkos and as an E-book in the Nook store.
I now know that I definitely want to pursue book editing as a career. It always bothers me when
there are grammatical or content errors in books. With editing as a career, I would have the
chance to make books as perfect as they can be. I find great satisfaction in finding and correcting
any mistakes until there is only a flawless novel waiting to be read. I am confident in my
decision to follow a career path in English and tackle book editing as my occupation.
I believe the senior project has allowed me to narrow down my choices for my future. I tried out
a possible career option and found that I love it and I want to continue on this track. Books have
always been a part of my life and it is exciting to know they will be a large part of my future.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Elspeth Male
