  • 4. To protect an important trade route, they established a colony at the Cape of Good Hope, the future Capetown
  • 5.
  • 6. Recognizing the fort needed economic and financial support, the Dutch West India Company established New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island
  • 7. The fort then became a fur-trading post and the settlement a large agricultural development
  • 8. In contrast to the French, Spanish, and English, the Dutch made no missionary efforts
  • 9.
  • 10. In a 1667 peace treaty, the Dutch gave New Netherlands to the English
  • 11.
  • 12. New Jersey being one of these payoffs, was small and poor because of its wealthier neighbors New York and Pennsylvania
  • 13. The colony was later separated into two different colonies
  • 14. And yet again the colony was put back together into one whole colony
