In their own words….

“ “ Sharing my experience was also, one of the greatest moments of this trip. It is true that at first I thought there was nothing people from Toronto could learn from me, but then I found that the discussions I had with people, as well as the presentations I was doing , allowed them to learn a great deal about me, my role in the YMCA, in my community, my country and my culture” Maryse Guinez Coly Subject to Citizen Ambassador ,YMCA of Senegal

Transformative Partnerships ,[object Object],“ It all began when my mind opened up to the unlimited number of possibilities that life has to offer. I began taking risks and exploring possibilities and now I don’t want to stop! I continue finding new answers that my finite eyes once saw as impossible. Barriers have been removed through the powerful tools of knowledge and education. Education not only makes us human but also acts as an agent in transforming our world” Daniel Correa – Young Leader YMCA of Medellin

  6. 40 Developmental Assets® for Adolescents (ages 12-18) Search Institute® has identified the following building blocks of healthy development—known as Developmental Assets®—that help young people grow up healthy, caring, and responsible. A collection of experiences, competencies and values that researchers have identified as being deciding factors of success in the lives of young people.
  7. You may well have come across the notion of 'Global Citizenship', but what does it mean? It is a term being used increasingly in educational circles, and consequently there are a variety of views about what it is. These range from the idea that everyone is a citizen of the globe to the standpoint that in a legal sense there is no such thing as a global citizen. Global Citizenship is more than the sum of its parts. It goes beyond simply knowing that we are citizens of the globe to an acknowledgement of our responsibilities both to each other and to the Earth itself. Global Citizenship is about understanding the need to tackle injustice and inequality, and having the desire and ability to work actively to do so. It is about valuing the Earth as precious and unique, and safeguarding the future for those coming after us. Global Citizenship is a way of thinking and behaving. It is an outlook on life, a belief that we can make a difference. We see a Global Citizen as someone who: is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen; respects and values diversity; has an understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically and environmentally; is outraged by social injustice; participates in and contributes to the community at a range of levels from local to global; is willing to act to make the world a more sustainable place; takes responsibility for their actions.

  9. Embedded  in who we are : it is in the DNA of the YMCA since its beginnings. It is how the movement grow across the world into the 124 Ys that are part of our network today.  It was first through the Foreign Service that later transformed into the World Service, and it is today through the International Program that we continue strengthening the global network through mutual cooperation, enabling local YMCAs to serve better the communities we work in.  Each of the commitments of Challenge 21 is a call for action at the global level that we will not be able to fulfill unless we work in cooperation:   “• Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and striving for spiritual, intellectual and physical well-being of individuals and wholeness of communities. • Empowering all, especially young people and women to take increased responsibilities and assume leadership at all levels and working towards an equitable society. • Advocating for and promoting the rights of women and upholding the rights of children. • Fostering dialogue and partnership between people of different faiths and ideologies and recognizing the cultural identities of people and promoting cultural renewal. • Committing to work in solidarity with the poor, dispossessed, uprooted people and oppressed racial, religious and ethnic minorities. • Seeking to be mediators and reconcilers in situations of conflict and working for meaningful participation and advancement of people for their own self-determination. • Defending God’s creation against all that would destroy it and preserving and protecting the earth’s resources for coming generations.   To face these challenges, the YMCA will develop patterns of co-operation at all levels that enable self-sustenance and self-determination.”     It is an effective mechanism to strengthen our own communities, our youth, and our association – we have realized that International Cooperation is not just about what we can do for our partners and their communities but it is about what we can do together and also about what we can learn from them. We have discovered that there are areas in which we have great lessons to learn from our partners as individuals, as organization as a society from learning about Southern partners.  We believe our mission goes beyond our borders . Environmental, economic, and cultural forces move across the globe with increasing fluidity. In an area like the GTA, the international flow of people, goods, ideas, and challenges is especially palpable. As of 2006 about half of Toronto residents were foreign-born. Statistics Canada projects that by 2031, four in five Torontonians (78%) will be an immigrant or the Canadian-born child of an immigrant.  Given these circumstances, it is only by understanding and engaging with the global context that we can truly understand and engage with our own local communities. The international aspect of the YMCA’s work deepens our relationships with those we serve in the GTA, especially youth, who are increasingly global in their thinking. Many members and staff are also more convinced of the YMCA’s relevance because of our international activities.
  10. Embeded – solidarity, parternship and cooperation - the YMCA since its beginnings has done international work, it is how the movement grow across the world into the 124 Y that are part of our network and up to today the network gets stronge through mutual cooperation, enableing local YMCAs to serve better the communities they work in. It is an effective mechanism to strenthten our own communities, our youht, and our association. We believe our mission goes beyond our borders. Many members and staff are also more convinced of the YMCA’s relevance because of our international activities
  11. In our commitment to mutual learning and growth we have eight international partnerships. Each partership is very particular and adapts and changes according to the circumstances of both YMCA, its strategic plans and their enviroments. That is how we currently support projects in Senegal, Ghana and Colombia that target particurlary youth and women in the local communities. This projects are implemented by the local association who is the expert in the local issues. Some of the areas of this projects are: Sexual Education, Civic Engagement, Environment, youth entrepreneurship. Through this projects over 20,00 0 youth are reach out every year. It is our commitment in this strategic plan to deepen our partnerships. GHANA 3323 COLOMBIA 2435 SENEGAL 24532

  15. To foster a sense of youth global citizenship through a direct experience of international realities and to provide opportunities for capacity building to young leaders in Southern countries that will support local organizations in processes that involve youth engagement, youth leadership and diversity. To provide a space for exchange and learning between young leaders from the South, who will meet in Toronto simultaneously during this exchange
  16. When I presented the S2C concept in Toronto, I learn that even if youth here look different to youth in Africa, this concept can be spread and run here, because as a youth, we all have essentially the same problems. …we can start changing this from wherever we are”
  17. Bring our partners to live Makes global issues real and with them the urgency of action – we see the reprecusions of what we do here and that is a call for responsible decisions (story of Cesar) Expose our leaders to other leaders – here we are not talking about youth and young leaders but also and specially senior leaders (story of Daniel) Make us think about our own potential – open new windows for us to how our partners engage youth in their local communities – apply to our context New local partners – ever lasting relationshisp for them but also for us -
  18. Linking it with other services gets you knew allies, increase the visibility while it creates learning for the program who receives them Taking it outside the Y not only to other organizatios that may be of interest of the participants but also to forums where the youth can presnet their ideas and generate dialogue and udnerstnating: OCIC and to the city Hall – Member of parlament Flexibility because they are the priority – it is not the program is the youth. Allowing them the space to contribute to the plan and make changes to it when needed. – example of the interviews and newspaper articles.
