Types of charter

A voyage charter is the hiring of both a vessel and a crew for specific
voyage between a load port and a discharge port. The charterer pays the
vessel owner on a per-ton or lump-sum basis. The owner pays the port
costs (excluding stevedoring), fuel costs and crew costs. The payment for
the use of the vessel is known as freight. This type of charter specifies a
period known as laytime, for unloading the cargo. If laytime is exceeded,
the charterer must pay demurrage. If laytime is saved, the charter party
may require the ship-owner(s) to pay dispatch to the charter.

A time charter is the hiring of a vessel for a specific period of time, the
owner still manages the vessel but the charterer selects the ports and
directs the vessel where to go. The charterer pays for all fuel the vessel
consumes and a daily hire to the owner of the vessel

A bareboat charter or demise charter is an arrangement for the hiring of a
vessel whereby no administration or technical maintenance is included as
part of the agreement. The charterer obtains possession and full control of
the vessel along with the legal and financial responsibility for it. The
charterer pays for all operating expenses, including fuel, crew, port
expenses and Protection and Indemnity (P&I) plus hull insurance. In
commercial demise chartering, the charter period may last for many years,
and may end with the charterer acquiring title (ownership) of the vessel. In
this case, a demise charter could be likened to lease to buy or hire-
purchase from the owners, who may have been the actual shipbuilders.
Demise chartering is common for oil tankers, LNG ships and bulk carriers

Dry cargo vessels

HANDYSIZE VESSELS

Handysize vessels make up the bulk of the worlds
ocean-going cargo fleet. They are generally capable
of handling shipments between 25,000 and 35,000 dwt
(dead weight tonnes). These vessels are more
maneuverable and have shallower draft than larger
vessels and have the ability to access a wider variety
of ports. Most Handysize ships are “geared” for
example fitted with cranes, thus allowing them to load
and discharge at ports which lack cranes or other such
cargo handling systems. Compared to larger dry bulk
shipping carriers these vessels also can carry a large
                      variety of cargo types.

HANDYMAX VESSELS

Handymax Vessels are larger versions of the popular
Handysize Vessels carrying approximately 37,000 to
52,000 dwt (dead weight tonnes) of dry bulk cargo. A
typical Handymax ship will be outfitted with five dry
bulk cargo holds and up to four cranes with 30 metric
ton lifting capacity for cargo self loading/unloading
operations in suitable ports. These ships are typically
available for both domestic and international ship
                      charterage.

PANAMAX VESSELS

Panamax Vessels are very large ocean going vessels
that are designed to take advantage of the maximum
vessel capacity of the Panama Canal. They ships can
typically carry between 55,000 and 85,000 dwt (dead
weight tonnes) and are the shipping vessels of choice
for many dry bulk shipping cargoes such as grain or
                      minerals.

Oil tankers

An oil tanker, also known as a petroleum tanker is a merchant ship designed for the bulk transport of
oil. There are two (2) basic types of oil tankers, the crude tanker and the product tanker. Crude
tankers move large quantities of unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to the refinery.
Product tankers generally are much smaller vessels and are designed to move refined
petrochemicals from refineries to points near consuming markets.

Oil tankers are often classified by their size as well as their occupation. The size classes range
from inland or coastal tankers of a few thousand metric tons of deadweight to a mammoth ultra
large crude carrier (ULCC) of 550,000 dwt. Tankers move approximately 2,000,000,000 (two
billion) metric tons of oil every year.

Cruise ships

Cruise ship or liner is a passenger ship used for pleasure voyages, where the voyage itself and
the ship’s amenities are part of the sailing experience, as well as the different destinations along
the way. Point to point transportation is not the prime purpose, as cruise ships operate mostly on
routes that return the passenger to the point of embarkation at the originating port, so the ports
of call are usually in a specified region of a continent.
