How To Start a Family Office
Hello this I s Richard Wilson and I am going to talk to you about how to start
a family office. I have found many wealth management firms wish they
offered a full suite of family office services. Lots of people that work in
private banks and trust are always asking for advice on how to launch a
family office.
3. HOWTOSTARTAFAMILYOFFICE
How To Start a Family Office
Here are some things to consider before launching a family office:
1. It is not simple, or everyone would be doing it. The cost to run a family
office is pretty significant. Your initial assets need to be between $50
million and $100 million of committed capital. If you have less than $50,
then it will be relatively challenging to take on all the costs. Operating
on a thin budget is not ideal for family offices.
2. Many times when I speak with family offices, I am asked what the most
important person to have on your team first. Most of the time family
offices a CPA first or a family office was started by a CPA. Over 80% of
the family offices I know were started by a CPA. This is because they are
seen as the advisor on tax and investment issues. If it is not a CPA, it is a
financial advisor a wealth advisor. If it is not a CPA, make sure it is
someone with taxation knowledge on the global scale. Your amount of
tax knowledge in house will result in what clients you have. You need to
be able to manage multigenerational challenges.
4. HOWTOSTARTAFAMILYOFFICE
How To Start a Family Office
Here are some things to consider before launching a family office:
3. Run everything like a well-oiled machine. There should be a step by
step process for everything that is done. Not just for compliance
reasons, but just so the business is run smoothly.
4. Make sure that you have reviews of performance, risk and operations.
These should be done every day, month, quarter, and year. Capital
preservation is the number one job. Preserving the wealth of the clients
should be the number one job and reviewing performance is crucial to
the success of the family office.
I hope these ideas helped to give you a framework for a business plan for a
family office.
