Raccoon Report
_______________________________________________________
A raccoon is an omnivore which means that these animals will both
eat plants and other animals. They will eat anything that also means
that they will eat frogs, crayfish, birds, mice (and other small
mammals). When they are eating vegetation then they will eat fruit,
nuts, plants, crops and they will also eat garbage. Raccoons will
usually find their food in water areas. Raccoons will usually eat their
meals in the water. These animals will use their lighting-quick paws
so that they can grab a crayfish, a frog and the other aquatic
creatures. When these animals are on land then they will normally eat
mice, insects. The raccoons can find these animals in their hiding
places and they will also find them in raid nests they usually go in
these places to eat some tasty eggs. These animals will also eat
plants and fruit. These animals also eat fish, nuts, berries, seed,
small birds and they will also eat bird eggs. These animals also eat
reptiles to. These animals will also eat acorns to. Raccoons are really
will known to wash their food. They are also known for pulling food
apart so that they can replace the inedible bits. The only time when
these animals can hunt is at night that means that these animals are
nocturnal. Before raccoons start eating their food they will usually
wash or douse their food into water before they can start eating it.
Raccoons are not known for performing douse. But they will often
clean their food this is an unlikely reason. Lots of studies have been
found that the raccoon is in engage for doing dousing motions when
they are in the water. Researchers have found that the raccoons are
captive are more likely then the raccoons that live in the wild for
having douse food. Raccoons will normally forage their food and they
will usually find their food close to water. Raccoons have been known
to washing their food before they start eating it. Even through this
behavior is extremely not known but it is thought that their sense of
touch that is on their front paws of the raccoons are heightened when
they are wet. It has been suggested that the raccoons that are
captive are mimicking fishing and their shellfish-foraging behaviors. It
also means that they are searching for materials that they do not
want. Water maybe their heighten for their sense of touch. These
animals can be found in north and in South America and they can be
found on the tropical islands. These animals can be found on lots of
different habitats and those habitats are marshes, forests, prairies,
cities and suburbs. These animals can be found in Asia to, they can
also live in wooded locations and they can also be found in really big
cities. Raccoons usually live in habitats that have a really good food
source and that is near water and that is a protected aerator that
helps them with their survival. the habitats that are best suited for
raccoons are the hardwood swamps, floodplain forests, fresh and
saltwater marshes and they can also be found in cultivated and in
abandoned farmland. These animals can also be found in really big
cities. The raccoon is usually found in forest areas that have
underbrush and that is also near water. The raccoon can be spotted
in North America, Central America that is Canada to Panama. There
are some species of raccoon that are native to the islands of the
Bahamas, Lesser Antilles and that are off in Yucatan and they can
also be found in western Mexico to. These animals can be native to
other countries to but the common raccoon can be found in Europe
and in Japan. Raccoons can also live in the woods and in the forests.
They can also be found in really big cities. The other range that they
live in both of the Americas. These animals can also be found in the
lesser panda which is located in Asia. These animals can be found in
the areas of wooded areas and in the areas that have swamps.
These animals can also live in the United States and they can also
live in Mexico to. These animals can be found on every different
habitat that also includes urban areas. They can also be found in the
southern regions of Canada. These animals can be found in forests
to. The other habitats that they can be found are in the Marshes and
they can also be found on the prairies. They can also be found in
really big cities to. These animals can be found in Canada and all
over the United States. They can also be found on high elevations in
the Rocky Mountains and they can also be found in the southwest of
Mexico and in Central America. Raccoons can be found in wooded
areas that are near streams, ponds, and they can also be seen in the
marshes but they are most seen in agriculture areas that includes fox
barrows, rock crevices, brush piles, chimneys, attics and in other
structures. Raccoons also live in hollow trees, fissures which are
located in rocks; They can also be found in caves and in borrows to.
These animals can also live in Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, They
can also be found in some places in the United States. Their are a
few raccoons that live in the European counties like the Austria,
Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Netherlands and in the
Switzerland. The average size for the raccoon is 2 feet in a length. An
adult raccoon can grow to 10 to 20 pounds. The raccoons range is as
big as 23 to 38 inches this is how big the tail is to. The size of these
animals are 65 to 95 cm. These animals can weight about 1.8-10.4
kg. These animals can grow about 23.75 to 37.5in (60-95 cm). They
can also weigh about 4 to 23lbs (1.8 to 4 kg). The average size for a
raccoon is 70 cm that is the size through the nose to the tail. They
can weigh about 10kg. The raccoon can grow about 18 to 26 inches
(46-66 cm) long. Their tails can be big as 9 to 12 inches (23-30 cm)
long. The weigh of a raccoon really depends on the location where
the raccoon lives. The raccoons that live in Florida can weigh about
2.4kg (5.2 lb). The male raccoons that live in Alabama can weigh
about 4.31 kg (9.5 lb) and the females can weigh about 3.67 kg (8lb.).
The male raccoons that live in the Missouri can weigh about 6.76 kg
(15lb.), and the females can weigh about 5.94 kg (13.1lb). The
raccoons that live in Wisconsin can weigh about 6-11 kg (13.2-
24.25lb.) The length of the head and the body is 415-600 mm. The
height of the shoulder is 228-304mm. The length of the tail is 200-
405mm. The northern raccoon can reach about 30 to 26 inches (75 to
90 centimeters) that is long to the nose to the tip of their tails and it
can weigh about 22 pounds (10 kilograms). A male raccoon can
weigh more than 44 pounds (20 kilograms). The average size for a
raccoon is 5 to 12kg, max 22 to 26kg. Raccoons can reach about 50
to 100 cm (20 to 40 inches) the length for these animals (this also
includes the tail) and the weight for these animals are between 4.5
and to 16kg (10 to 35 pounds). The size of the raccoon’s tail is 20 to
40 cm (8 to 16 inches) that is in a length. The males are mush bigger
then the females are. The average size for the raccoon is 20 to 54 in
(51-136 cm). The average weigh for the raccoon is 12 to 16 pounds.
This is the size for the raccoons that live in colder areas. The biggest
size for a raccoon is 60lbs. The body size of the raccoon is 8ft (2.5
m). Raccoons can grow about 24 to 36 inches long this is how long
their tail is. Raccoons can live about 15 years and they can also live
about 5 to 6 years to. When they are in the wild then they will live for
6 years. The normal life span for a raccoon is 5 years. When they are
in the wild then they will live for 2 for 3 years. Raccoons are known to
live for 12 years when they are in the wild to. But there are some
raccoons that can only live for a few years. They can live about 13 to
16 years when they are in captivity. They can also live about 2 to 3
years that is also their average life span to. When they are in the wild
then they can live for 2 to 3 years and when they are in captivity then
they can live for 20 years. The raccoons that live in the northern parts
of their home range. They will start to gorge themselves when the
spring and the summer come so that they have some place to store
their body fat. Then when the winter comes then they will start to fall
asleep in dens. There are about six species of raccoons that live in
different locations of the world. The northern raccoons normally live in
North America. The other species of raccoons live on tropical islands.
Raccoons usually look for food for when it gets dark that means that
these animals are nocturnal. That means that they are active at night
and they sleep during the day. These animals will normally sleep in
hollow trees, wedged that are between branches. They will usually
sleep in burrows when the weather is cold. Raccoons will normally
make their dens in hollow trees, rock crevices, and they will also
make dens out of other animal burrows. Or even buildings will also
turn out to be dens for raccoons as well. They will remain in these
dens for 1 to 2 days are unless it is during rearing of their young and
they can also use their den to stay safe from harsh weather. These
animals do not hibernate which means that these animals are active
all time of the year. These are the raccoons that live in Southern
range but they will emerge during the winter. The raccoons that live in
the northern range they will usually go for warmer weather. That is
how they can live off their fat so that they can restore them losing as
much like 50% of their body weight. Raccoons have first discovered
that they have rabies was in Connecticut in the year of 1991.
Raccoons carry this Disease through the northeast of the United
States but raccoons are not the only animals that have this disease.
The other animals that have this disease but they are mostly
mammals and these mammals are dogs, cats, Skunks, foxes,
woodchucks and livestock all of these animals have been infected
with rabies. This disease may cause unprovoked aggression,
impaired movement, paralysis or it may also cause lack of
coordination, it may also cause a really weird friendly behavior and it
will also cause disorientation. On the front of the raccoons paws and
this is also on the hind paws to. On the front of the raccoon’s paws
the hind paws also have this to. On each off their front paws they
have 5 digits on them. The raccoons can use their front paws so that
they can grasp and manipulate food. These animals are great
climbers but they will usually climb up a tree with their head first.
There are about 10 different species that are in the size of their range
but most of them are a lot different by their appearance. All of these
raccoons can be found on both Americas. The most important sense
for a raccoon is their sense of tough it is really important for them
because on their front paws they are covered with a spiny coat that is
use to protect them when they are not being used for aid food.
Raccoons are some of the few animals that are really good at being
family pets then after that they will be sending back to the wild. But
the male raccoons can be kept as a pet because the adults can be
really aggressive when they get older and they will have to be set
free. Raccoons are related to the weasel and the bear family. They
have a really good sense of hearing, sight and they also have a really
good sense of touch but they do have a really good sense of taste
and smell. Raccoons can both be awake by night and day but they
are most active at night that means that these animals are nocturnal.
They will also go out during the day to. But that does not mean that
they are diseased. Raccoons will normally just do it at their feeding
time especially when spring comes and also when they are rearing
their young. They may even dig their dens during the coldest times of
the year like in the late fall and in the winter but that is not true
hibernation because these animals will usually wander out when the
temperature gets warm. Raccoons are not a good animal to touch
because they have rabies. Rabies is a delay disease that is caused
by a virus that can easily attack the nervous system. The animals that
have this disease are normally the raccoon, skunks, foxes and bats.
This virus is located in the saliva and in the nervous tissue of a rabid
animal. Any contact with these animals will be reducing with the risk
of having rabies. Do not get any contact with a sick or an apparently
(orphaned) animal. Always stay away from animals that have rabies
because they may act strangely, especially those are unusually
tame, aggressive or even paralyzed. Always be suspicious when the
daytime comes because that is how that you can get in contact with
raccoons but they are most active at night. In the state of New York
there are more last then 50 animals in that start that are confirmed to
have rabies. Every year raccoons have been getting this disease. But
raccoons are not the only animals that have this disease the other
animals that have this disease are mostly mammals like cats, dogs,
ferrets, and livestock may have rabies. It is really important that you
have all of your dogs and your cats regularly vaccinated for rabies. If
you’re pet has gone with a fight with another animal. So to hold your
pet you have to wear gloves so that you can handle it. You will also
have to isolate it from other animals and people. Do you find
information about how your pet can survive then you will have to go
call your country health department or any other animal control officer
so that you can get any instructions? If you or anyone that has been
bitten or even scratched by a raccoon then they will have to wash
their wounds thoroughly with soap and water. In the winter raccoons
can restore their body fat. These animals do not hibernate and these
animals are not really active during the winter time to. They will
usually sleep when the winter comes but they will be easily
awakened. These animals can be really small but that does not mean
that they are not good at fighting. These animals are amazing fighters
they have to be good fighters because so that they can protect their
young from predators. The size for a raccoons territory is really
depends on how much food that the area has but the usually size for
territory is 2-5 square kilometers. These animals do not make their
own dens. They will often steal a den from other animals like a skunk
and a fox. They will sometimes fall sleep during the day. But they do
not sleep in a den they will usually sleep in a fallen log or a tree that
has fallen to. The sounds that a raccoon will make are hiss, growl
and they will also make a screech sound like an owl will make. The
predators that they will face are coyotes, foxes, great horned owls,
bobcats and even dogs will easily kill a raccoon. Raccoons can run
for 15mph. That is their top speed. Raccoons will start to mate in
February to March. A male raccoon will travel in really long distances
and then he will have to mate with lots of females, after the gestation
period which is in 63 days. The litter of kits will be more than two to
six babies that will make a littler in a raccoon family. A female will
normally give birth in a hollow tree or in a den (which can woodchuck
burrows, culverts, or under buildings). When the young has reach
four or to six months old then they will be ready to be on their own.
Raccoons will also mate in January or in February. A female will have
a littler of four to five cubs. They will start to be born in April and in
May. Raccoons will have their babies in a hollow tree, in ground
burrow or in caves. They will travel along the streams or the rivers so
that they can get some food. Even through raccoons live near forests
not streams. The males do not take any part of taking care of the
young. In the late summer. Then the littler will be weaned and they
will start to look after themselves when the winter comes. These
animals may become dormant but they do not hibernate. Raccoons
will usually mate in the late winter to the early spring to January to
March, but there are more raccoon species that have been known to
mate later which is in June. After the gestation period which is usually
2 months. The female will give birth to 5 baby raccoons. The name
for a baby raccoon are usually called cubs or kits. These babies are
born blind and deaf the moment that they are born. But they will start
to get these senses in the first month. These babies are not born with
hair so instead. They will have a layer of a light color fur. That has
distinctive black mask that will be visible that happens during birth.
Baby raccoons will weigh about 10cm long when they are born and
they can also weight about 75g. The raccoons will nurse their babies
in 7 weeks to 4 months. The babies will remain inside of the mother
until winter comes. The Gestation period is between 60-73 weeks to
60 days that is their normal gestation period. The number of kits will
be about 1 to 7 babies. The mother will give birth in April and in June.
The Estral period is 80 to 140 days. These animals are equally
opportunistic when it comes to finding a good denning area. When
they do find a den which will be in a tree hole, a fallen log or in an
attic that is in a house. The females will have 1 to 7 cubs; Females
start to have their babies in the early summer. The babies will often
spend their first two months and their lives high up in a tree hole.
After that then the mother and her babies will start to move to the
ground so that the cubs will start to explore all by themselves.
Raccoons will reach maturity in 2 years are for the males and for the
females is only for 1 year. The raccoon’s gestation period is 60 to 73
days. The average litter size for a raccoon is 3 to 4 babies. Females
will start to have their babies in the spring they will usually give birth
to 3 to 4 cubs. The babies’ eyes will not be able to open until 20 days
after they are born. These animals will not have rings on their tail or a
mask that will be found around their eyes until they get older. The
babies will remain in the den for about eight to ten weeks. The mother
raccoon are really protective when it comes to her babies. She even
will not let the father go any where near them. The mother will be
pregnant for about 63 to 65 days. The mother will normally have 2 to
6 cubs in a litter. Raccoons are in danger because they are getting
pushed into smaller places where is really hard to find food and
water. Their numbers are starting to shrink in their urban areas. The
raccoon’s numbers are starting to increase. There are about 800,000
to one million of raccoons that live all over the state of Minnesota.
Every year in this state there are hunters that are coming after these
animals because they want to harvest about 100,000 to 150, 00
raccoons that are getting killed in Minnesota. Trappers are also killing
them to. They have killed about over 75,000 to 100,000. They are
also in trouble because their habitat is so close to human territory.
Raccoons have been living side by side with humans for generations.
Raccoons are one of the most valuable wild animals in the United
States at this moment because of value. This animal can also be
found in other countries to like they can be found in France, The
Netherlands, in Germany and they can also be found in the parts of
Soviet Union. These populations for these animals have grown over
the last few years. There are some cases that are now considered to
be a nuisance. That is what I know about raccoons.

Raccoon report for micheal Boglino

  • 1. Customer: Michael Boglino Animal: Raccoon Report by: Felicia Ferentinos Raccoon Report _______________________________________________________ A raccoon is an omnivore which means that these animals will both eat plants and other animals. They will eat anything that also means that they will eat frogs, crayfish, birds, mice (and other small mammals). When they are eating vegetation then they will eat fruit, nuts, plants, crops and they will also eat garbage. Raccoons will usually find their food in water areas. Raccoons will usually eat their meals in the water. These animals will use their lighting-quick paws so that they can grab a crayfish, a frog and the other aquatic creatures. When these animals are on land then they will normally eat mice, insects. The raccoons can find these animals in their hiding places and they will also find them in raid nests they usually go in these places to eat some tasty eggs. These animals will also eat plants and fruit. These animals also eat fish, nuts, berries, seed, small birds and they will also eat bird eggs. These animals also eat reptiles to. These animals will also eat acorns to. Raccoons are really will known to wash their food. They are also known for pulling food apart so that they can replace the inedible bits. The only time when these animals can hunt is at night that means that these animals are nocturnal. Before raccoons start eating their food they will usually wash or douse their food into water before they can start eating it. Raccoons are not known for performing douse. But they will often clean their food this is an unlikely reason. Lots of studies have been found that the raccoon is in engage for doing dousing motions when they are in the water. Researchers have found that the raccoons are captive are more likely then the raccoons that live in the wild for having douse food. Raccoons will normally forage their food and they will usually find their food close to water. Raccoons have been known to washing their food before they start eating it. Even through this behavior is extremely not known but it is thought that their sense of touch that is on their front paws of the raccoons are heightened when they are wet. It has been suggested that the raccoons that are captive are mimicking fishing and their shellfish-foraging behaviors. It also means that they are searching for materials that they do not want. Water maybe their heighten for their sense of touch. These animals can be found in north and in South America and they can be
  • 2. found on the tropical islands. These animals can be found on lots of different habitats and those habitats are marshes, forests, prairies, cities and suburbs. These animals can be found in Asia to, they can also live in wooded locations and they can also be found in really big cities. Raccoons usually live in habitats that have a really good food source and that is near water and that is a protected aerator that helps them with their survival. the habitats that are best suited for raccoons are the hardwood swamps, floodplain forests, fresh and saltwater marshes and they can also be found in cultivated and in abandoned farmland. These animals can also be found in really big cities. The raccoon is usually found in forest areas that have underbrush and that is also near water. The raccoon can be spotted in North America, Central America that is Canada to Panama. There are some species of raccoon that are native to the islands of the Bahamas, Lesser Antilles and that are off in Yucatan and they can also be found in western Mexico to. These animals can be native to other countries to but the common raccoon can be found in Europe and in Japan. Raccoons can also live in the woods and in the forests. They can also be found in really big cities. The other range that they live in both of the Americas. These animals can also be found in the lesser panda which is located in Asia. These animals can be found in the areas of wooded areas and in the areas that have swamps. These animals can also live in the United States and they can also live in Mexico to. These animals can be found on every different habitat that also includes urban areas. They can also be found in the southern regions of Canada. These animals can be found in forests to. The other habitats that they can be found are in the Marshes and they can also be found on the prairies. They can also be found in really big cities to. These animals can be found in Canada and all over the United States. They can also be found on high elevations in the Rocky Mountains and they can also be found in the southwest of Mexico and in Central America. Raccoons can be found in wooded areas that are near streams, ponds, and they can also be seen in the marshes but they are most seen in agriculture areas that includes fox barrows, rock crevices, brush piles, chimneys, attics and in other structures. Raccoons also live in hollow trees, fissures which are located in rocks; They can also be found in caves and in borrows to. These animals can also live in Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, They can also be found in some places in the United States. Their are a
  • 3. few raccoons that live in the European counties like the Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Netherlands and in the Switzerland. The average size for the raccoon is 2 feet in a length. An adult raccoon can grow to 10 to 20 pounds. The raccoons range is as big as 23 to 38 inches this is how big the tail is to. The size of these animals are 65 to 95 cm. These animals can weight about 1.8-10.4 kg. These animals can grow about 23.75 to 37.5in (60-95 cm). They can also weigh about 4 to 23lbs (1.8 to 4 kg). The size of the raccoon’s tail is 20 to 40 cm (8 to 16 inches) that is in a length. The males are mush bigger then the females are. The average size for the raccoon is 20 to 54 in (51-136 cm). The average weigh for the raccoon is 12 to 16 pounds. This is the size for the raccoons that live in colder areas. The biggest size for a raccoon is 60lbs. The body size of the raccoon is 8ft (2.5 m). Raccoons can grow about 24 to 36 inches long this is how long their tail is. Raccoons can live about 15 years and they can also live about 5 to 6 years to. When they are in the wild then they will live for 6 years. The normal life span for a raccoon is 5 years. When they are in the wild then they will live for 2 for 3 years. Raccoons are known to live for 12 years when they are in the wild to. But there are some raccoons that can only live for a few years. They can live about 13 to
  • 4. 16 years when they are in captivity. They can also live about 2 to 3 years that is also their average life span to. When they are in the wild then they can live for 2 to 3 years and when they are in captivity then they can live for 20 years. The raccoons that live in the northern parts of their home range. They will start to gorge themselves when the spring and the summer come so that they have some place to store their body fat. Then when the winter comes then they will start to fall asleep in dens. There are about six species of raccoons that live in different locations of the world. The northern raccoons normally live in North America. The other species of raccoons live on tropical islands. Raccoons usually look for food for when it gets dark that means that these animals are nocturnal. That means that they are active at night and they sleep during the day. These animals will normally sleep in hollow trees, wedged that are between branches. They will usually sleep in burrows when the weather is cold. Raccoons will normally make their dens in hollow trees, rock crevices, and they will also make dens out of other animal burrows. Or even buildings will also turn out to be dens for raccoons as well. They will remain in these dens for 1 to 2 days are unless it is during rearing of their young and they can also use their den to stay safe from harsh weather. These animals do not hibernate which means that these animals are active all time of the year. These are the raccoons that live in Southern range but they will emerge during the winter. The raccoons that live in the northern range they will usually go for warmer weather. That is how they can live off their fat so that they can restore them losing as much like 50% of their body weight. Raccoons have first discovered that they have rabies was in Connecticut in the year of 1991. Raccoons carry this Disease through the northeast of the United States but raccoons are not the only animals that have this disease. The other animals that have this disease but they are mostly mammals and these mammals are dogs, cats, Skunks, foxes, woodchucks and livestock all of these animals have been infected with rabies. This disease may cause unprovoked aggression, impaired movement, paralysis or it may also cause lack of coordination, it may also cause a really weird friendly behavior and it will also cause disorientation. On the front of the raccoons paws and this is also on the hind paws to. On the front of the raccoon’s paws the hind paws also have this to. On each off their front paws they have 5 digits on them. The raccoons can use their front paws so that they can grasp and manipulate food. These animals are great
  • 5. climbers but they will usually climb up a tree with their head first. There are about 10 different species that are in the size of their range but most of them are a lot different by their appearance. All of these raccoons can be found on both Americas. The most important sense for a raccoon is their sense of tough it is really important for them because on their front paws they are covered with a spiny coat that is use to protect them when they are not being used for aid food. Raccoons are some of the few animals that are really good at being family pets then after that they will be sending back to the wild. But the male raccoons can be kept as a pet because the adults can be really aggressive when they get older and they will have to be set free. Raccoons are related to the weasel and the bear family. They have a really good sense of hearing, sight and they also have a really good sense of touch but they do have a really good sense of taste and smell. Raccoons can both be awake by night and day but they are most active at night that means that these animals are nocturnal. They will also go out during the day to. But that does not mean that they are diseased. Raccoons will normally just do it at their feeding time especially when spring comes and also when they are rearing their young. They may even dig their dens during the coldest times of the year like in the late fall and in the winter but that is not true hibernation because these animals will usually wander out when the temperature gets warm. Raccoons are not a good animal to touch because they have rabies. Rabies is a delay disease that is caused by a virus that can easily attack the nervous system. The animals that have this disease are normally the raccoon, skunks, foxes and bats. This virus is located in the saliva and in the nervous tissue of a rabid animal. Any contact with these animals will be reducing with the risk of having rabies. Do not get any contact with a sick or an apparently (orphaned) animal. Always stay away from animals that have rabies because they may act strangely, especially those are unusually tame, aggressive or even paralyzed. Always be suspicious when the daytime comes because that is how that you can get in contact with raccoons but they are most active at night. In the state of New York there are more last then 50 animals in that start that are confirmed to have rabies. Every year raccoons have been getting this disease. But raccoons are not the only animals that have this disease the other animals that have this disease are mostly mammals like cats, dogs, ferrets, and livestock may have rabies. It is really important that you have all of your dogs and your cats regularly vaccinated for rabies. If
  • 6. you’re pet has gone with a fight with another animal. So to hold your pet you have to wear gloves so that you can handle it. You will also have to isolate it from other animals and people. Do you find information about how your pet can survive then you will have to go call your country health department or any other animal control officer so that you can get any instructions? If you or anyone that has been bitten or even scratched by a raccoon then they will have to wash their wounds thoroughly with soap and water. In the winter raccoons can restore their body fat. These animals do not hibernate and these animals are not really active during the winter time to. They will usually sleep when the winter comes but they will be easily awakened. These animals can be really small but that does not mean that they are not good at fighting. These animals are amazing fighters they have to be good fighters because so that they can protect their young from predators. The size for a raccoons territory is really depends on how much food that the area has but the usually size for territory is 2-5 square kilometers. These animals do not make their own dens. They will often steal a den from other animals like a skunk and a fox. They will sometimes fall sleep during the day. But they do not sleep in a den they will usually sleep in a fallen log or a tree that has fallen to. The sounds that a raccoon will make are hiss, growl and they will also make a screech sound like an owl will make. The predators that they will face are coyotes, foxes, great horned owls, bobcats and even dogs will easily kill a raccoon. Raccoons can run for 15mph. That is their top speed. Raccoons will start to mate in February to March. A male raccoon will travel in really long distances and then he will have to mate with lots of females, after the gestation period which is in 63 days. The litter of kits will be more than two to six babies that will make a littler in a raccoon family. A female will normally give birth in a hollow tree or in a den (which can woodchuck burrows, culverts, or under buildings). When the young has reach four or to six months old then they will be ready to be on their own. Raccoons will also mate in January or in February. A female will have a littler of four to five cubs. They will start to be born in April and in May. Raccoons will have their babies in a hollow tree, in ground burrow or in caves. They will travel along the streams or the rivers so that they can get some food. Even through raccoons live near forests not streams. The males do not take any part of taking care of the young. In the late summer. Then the littler will be weaned and they will start to look after themselves when the winter comes. These
  • 7. animals may become dormant but they do not hibernate. Raccoons will usually mate in the late winter to the early spring to January to March, but there are more raccoon species that have been known to mate later which is in June. After the gestation period which is usually 2 months. The female will give birth to 5 baby raccoons. The name for a baby raccoon are usually called cubs or kits. These babies are born blind and deaf the moment that they are born. But they will start to get these senses in the first month. These babies are not born with hair so instead. They will have a layer of a light color fur. That has distinctive black mask that will be visible that happens during birth. Baby raccoons will weigh about 10cm long when they are born and they can also weight about 75g. The raccoons will nurse their babies in 7 weeks to 4 months. The babies will remain inside of the mother until winter comes. The Gestation period is between 60-73 weeks to 60 days that is their normal gestation period. The number of kits will be about 1 to 7 babies. The mother will give birth in April and in June. The Estral period is 80 to 140 days. These animals are equally opportunistic when it comes to finding a good denning area. When they do find a den which will be in a tree hole, a fallen log or in an attic that is in a house. The females will have 1 to 7 cubs; Females start to have their babies in the early summer. The babies will often spend their first two months and their lives high up in a tree hole. After that then the mother and her babies will start to move to the ground so that the cubs will start to explore all by themselves. Raccoons will reach maturity in 2 years are for the males and for the females is only for 1 year. The raccoon’s gestation period is 60 to 73 days. The average litter size for a raccoon is 3 to 4 babies. Females will start to have their babies in the spring they will usually give birth to 3 to 4 cubs. The babies’ eyes will not be able to open until 20 days after they are born. These animals will not have rings on their tail or a mask that will be found around their eyes until they get older. The babies will remain in the den for about eight to ten weeks. The mother raccoon are really protective when it comes to her babies. She even will not let the father go any where near them. The mother will be pregnant for about 63 to 65 days. The mother will normally have 2 to 6 cubs in a litter. Raccoons are in danger because they are getting pushed into smaller places where is really hard to find food and water. Their numbers are starting to shrink in their urban areas. The raccoon’s numbers are starting to increase. There are about 800,000 to one million of raccoons that live all over the state of Minnesota.
  • 8. Every year in this state there are hunters that are coming after these animals because they want to harvest about 100,000 to 150, 00 raccoons that are getting killed in Minnesota. Trappers are also killing them to. They have killed about over 75,000 to 100,000. They are also in trouble because their habitat is so close to human territory. Raccoons have been living side by side with humans for generations. Raccoons are one of the most valuable wild animals in the United States at this moment because of value. This animal can also be found in other countries to like they can be found in France, The Netherlands, in Germany and they can also be found in the parts of Soviet Union. These populations for these animals have grown over the last few years. There are some cases that are now considered to be a nuisance. That is what I know about raccoons.
