Soil remediation, water and air purification
systems and soil protection
The remediation of a diesel crust under a former industrial
site, cleaning groundwater contaminated with chlorine under-
neath a town, purification of processed air with a (catalytic) in-
cinerator or the deployment of a temporary water purification
system during the maintenance of an industrial plant. These
are all examples of projects we deal with on a daily basis.
Whether it involves cleaning soil, water or air, we would like
to be your partner in finding innovative but above all practical
and feasible solutions. We have been doing this since 1988:
effectively, efficiently and saving costs!
Landowners have an obligation to prevent soil contamination.
A clean site is a form of good housekeeping. We have been
helping landowners in this task and installing soil protection
measures in newly built and refurbished service stations since
1995. In recent years we have laid down liquid-proof floors,
installed hard surfaces and put in company drainage systems
numerous times. Our installations can be admired at service
stations, waste processors (container storage sites) and indu-
strial and facilities installations.
Why HMVT and WeGroSan/HMVT?
We are an environmental technology company that searches
for innovative solutions for the protection and remediation of
soil and the purification of water and air flows. Our staff are
our most valuable asset: innovative but straightforward with a
practical approach and focused on the solution and the custo-
mer. That’s why we would like to be your partner!
Soil remediation
The soil is the starting point for any building development; it
supports buildings and infrastructure as well as a significant
part of our environmental quality. The soil is used very intensi-
vely. Our aim is to remediate contaminated locations as sustai-
nably as possible in such a way that the site is also suitable for
the needs of the next generation.
HMVT and WeGroSan/HMVT are an all-round soil remediation
company. We are not restricted to one or two techniques but
adapt our approach to the site. More than 20 years ago, we
were one of the first companies that started with on-site re-
mediation. In the meanwhile we have gained experience of a
broad range of remediation techniques, ranging from excava-
tion, pump & treat to biological, chemical and thermal tech-
nologies.
Our strength lies in finding smart solutions. This sometimes
means that we advise you to do nothing or just monitor the
situation. The right solution for a particular site often lies in a
combination of the appropriate remediation techniques.
Water and air purification systems
We take clean water and pure air for granted, but behind the
scenes we have to work increasingly hard to even make this
possible. HMVT wishes to be your partner here too, by finding
and realising practical solutions. We have our own production
hall where the purification installations are assembled to cus-
tomised specifications. Our installations are suitable for the
purification of industrial processed air or -water. We have a
broad range of technologies at our disposal and are particu-
larly specialised in mobile installations.

How we operate
Any soil remediation or air or water purification system is al-
ways custom made. Besides, we believe that the social and
ecological costs of remediation or purification should not be
astronomically high. We put together a specialist team for
each project with a broad base of expertise. This team resear-
ches and designs the most fitting solution with the client. We
guarantee that our solutions work and not only install systems
but maintain these if you so wish, also on the basis of a fixed
price.
Innovation
Innovation is in our genes. Our research team is always sear-
ching for new solutions, whether this concerns soil remediati-
on or purification of water or air or civil engineering works. We
work a lot with students, research institutes and consultan-
cies. A good example of our innovative powers is the continu-
ed development of ‘Corona Pulse Technology’ jointly with the
Technical University of Eindhoven. Stated briefly, this method
purifies air by creating ‘mini-lightning’. This is a highly ener-
gy-efficient method for getting rid of odours from industrial
vapours. You can find more information about this promising
method of air purification at www.corona-airtreatment.com.
Our company
HMVT and WeGroSan/HMVT employ approximately 40 expe-
rienced environmental experts and technicians. On average,
our employees have been working in this field for ten years.
Quality and safety are at the core of our company strategy.
The personnel we deploy, the projects we carry out and the
installations we assemble and maintain comply with all the
standards, ranging from ISO 9001, VCA** and the Achilles Pro-
tocol to the BRL guidelines and CE marks. ATEX systems are
also in safe hands with us.
Carbon Footprint
We offset the Carbon Footprint of our buildings and our travel
miles through the Trees for All foundation. Your project can
also be offset via this foundation. We not only compensate but
we also continually search for greener ways to decontaminate
soil, for example. We have developed our own Carbon Foot-
print Calculator for this purpose and are experimenting with
geothermal, wind and solar energy to run our installations.

Excavation
Excavation is a fast and efficient way of removing contamina-
tion. Depending on the situation a suitable method is chosen.
It is, for example, often necessary to take stability measures
to safeguard nearby structures. Soldier piles, sheet piling,
sheeting boxes and excavation tubes are techniques that we
frequently use and in which we have gained considerable ex-
perience. At sites that are difficult to access, specially adapted
equipment will be used. Sometimes it may be appropriate to
carry out manual excavations or excavation using soil suction.
WeGroSan/HMVT has a wealth of experience in similar pro-
jects, and based on its expertise is able to deploy a suitable
method.
In practice
1 Edingen (project value 150,000 euros): excavation of the
centre up to 7 metres below ground level using a sheeting
box to safeguard the adjacent structure.
2 Flémalle (project value 120,000 euros): considering the
very small space it was decided to excavate the contamina-
ted ground in the immediate vicinity of the building using
tubes up to 12 m below ground level. The first excavated
tube was used as a pump pit in order to be able to carry out
the rest of the excavation in a dry area.
3 Meerle (project value 35,000 euros): : excavation in private
garden. In view of the small area excavation work was car-
ried out alongside the building using a small aluminium
box. For the removal of the highly contaminated soil from
the crawl space a ground suction system was used.
Pump & Treat or Extractive Remediation
Extractive remediation techniques are techniques where the
contamination is extracted from the soil and is often treated
above the ground. We apply the following techniques:
• soil vapour extraction
• compressed air injection
• various types of groundwater extraction
	 - dewatering by means of vacuum drainage
	 - gravity drainage
	 - Multi-Phase Extraction
	 - deep-well drainage
In practice
1 Antwerp, Belgium (project value > 2,000,000 euros): large-
scale NAPL remediation with more than 600 remediation
filters. A NAPL layer of more than 1,500 m3
was removed.
2 Antwerp, Belgium (project value 280,000 euros): combi-
nation of NAPL remediation with groundwater extraction,
compressed air injection and soil vapour extraction. The
NAPL layer was completely removed.
3 Dendermonde, Belgium (project value 92,000 euros): re-
moval of NAPL layer using Multi-Phase Extraction. The
NAPL layer was completely removed thus achieving the re-
mediation objectives.
Biological remediations
Many of our remediation methods also involve a biological
phase in which, for example, the residual contamination in the
plume is broken down biologically after removal of the core.
Depending on the nature and the seriousness of the residual
contamination, the breakdown is stimulated by introducing
oxygen and/or a carbon source and nutrients. We use both
aerobic and anaerobic breakdown processes.
We design and monitor these degradation processes in-house.
In some cases natural degradation is such that monitoring is
sufficient.
We apply the following techniques:
• Bio-venting the unsaturated zone
• Air-sparging the saturated zone
• Shock load injections (one-off nutrient injections)
• Continuous injection by means of extraction and infiltra-
tion of the groundwater with nutrients. Biological techni-
ques are a particularly suitable and economic alternative
in plume areas or as a biological barrier.

Aerobic degradation in practice
1 Vilvoorde, Belgium (project value 800,000 euros): combi-
nation of Multi-Phase Extraction, compressed air injection
and soil vapour extraction. By means of compressed air in-
jection, the chlorohydrocarbon contamination was remedi-
ated down to below the post-remediation value imposed
by the Belgian authorities. Soil vapour extraction ensured
that the vapours released in the compressed air injection
process were extracted.
2 Oosterhout, The Netherlands (project value >200,000 eu-
ros): combination of chemical oxidation with compressed
air injection and soil vapour extraction. The volatile aro-
matics and mineral oil contamination present in the plume
area were reduced to below the post-remediation value
by means of compressed air injection. The combination of
chemical oxidation and compressed air injection resulted in
reduction of the load by more than 90%.
3 Bilthoven, The Netherlands (project value 205,000 euros):
combination of compressed air injection with nutrient in-
jection. The mineral oil and BTEX contamination found in
the groundwater was remediated and certified by the com-
petent authorities.
Depending on the specific situation of the location, we will se-
lect our nutrients, inject compressed air, oxygen releasing salts
or nutrients. We also regularly inject the slow-release electron
donor developed by our R&D department on the basis of soya
oil, namely, ENNA.
Thermal remediation
The classic in-situ techniques are often insufficient to efficien-
tly removing a true hotspot with DNAPL. In such cases we can
deploy a thermal technique called ‘Electrical Resistance He-
ating’ (ERH). This technique involves heating up the soil and
groundwater to almost 100o
C, whereby the chlorinated hydro-
carbons simply evaporate from the soil. With this technology it
is possible to achieve very high returns, up to more than 99%.
We carry out ERH together with TRS Group from the United
States under the Joint Venture HMVTRS. The TRS Group has
more than 10 years’ experience with ERH and has already suc-
cessfully completed dozens of projects.
More information about Thermal remediation can be found
on page 28 and 29.
ENNA
Natural breakdown of VOCl contaminations (including the degre-
asing substances Per and Tri) is possible with the right Redox con-
ditions and in the presence of a substrate (DOC). Per and Tri can
be degraded under anaerobic conditions. Micro-organisms use a
different substance (the substrate) as food and break down the
chlorated hydrocarbons during the process.
The contamination is broken down to a harmless ethane in se-
veral steps. This means that for Per and Tri, but also for the waste
products Cis and VC, this contamination can only be broken down
anaerobically.
In practice we often encounter VOCl contaminations where some
degradation is taking place, but the REDOX conditions and the
levels of natural substrate (DOC) in the soil are not sufficient to
attain a stable end situation without active intervention. It is pos-
sible to promote the breakdown by introducing a substrate (a
source of DOC) into the ground.
ENNA promotes the sustained breakdown of VOCl. For ENNA a
mixture of substrate is injected only once into the source. The
principal constituent of this substrate consists of vegetable soya
oils. Care must be taken that no crust is created at the top. That
is why with ENNA the soya is added as a suspension (10 to 15%
soyavegetableoils).Moreoverthesoyaactsasasourceofcarbon
to promotesustained breakdown over 5 to 10 years. Therefore an
amount is introduced so in principle a single injection is sufficient.
This helps to reduce costs. We have applied the ENNA concept in
many locations with great success.

Anaerobic breakdown in practice
1 Dordrecht, The Netherlands (project value 73,000 euros):
groundwater extraction and infiltration of groundwater with
biological stimulants. By pumping groundwater to the surf-
ace, providing a substrate and reinfiltrating this mixture, we
successfully remediated a large plume area by means of an-
aerobic breakdown.
2 Zwolle, The Netherlands (project value 700,000 euros):
chemical oxidation in combination with stimulated break-
down. Chemical oxidation removed a large part of the VOCl
source. Biological breakdown followed successful stimula-
tion after the injection of ENNA, developed in-house. The
concentrations fell to below the reconditioning values but
for one monitoring tube.
3 Veghel, The Netherlands (project value 350,000 euros): sti-
mulated breakdown of VOCl contamination with ENNA. Em-
placement of bio-screen with injection of long-lasting ENNA
carbon source.
The pollutants in the plume area, which extended a few
hundred metres, were stopped by three bio-screens.
Chemical Remediations
Chemical techniques are increasingly used to tackle contami-
nation problems, on the one hand to break down contamina-
tion (for example oxidation and reduction), and on the other
hand to fix contamination in the soil.
Chemical oxidation
A technology that has proven itself in recent years is chemical
oxidation. With the help of chemical oxidation we are able to
obtain a high rate of remediation within a short period of time.
This technique is often particularly applied to core areas with
high pollutant concentrations. Depending on the local conta-
mination situation we apply the following chemical oxidation
techniques:
• Chemical oxidation using hydrogen peroxide (Fenton’s
	 reagent)
• Application of ‘Enhanced’ Fenton’s
• Chemical oxidation using permanganate
• Chemical oxidation using activated persulphate.
Chemical reduction
In addition to chemical oxidation, we also apply chemical re-
duction by injecting zero-charged nano ferrite powder. We of-
ten combine this method with biological degradation together
with the ENNA concept: FENNA.
Immobilisation
Not all pollutants are necessarily suited to remediate by che-
mical or biological extraction, for example heavy metals. A
(partly) mobile contamination can also be immobilised so that
escape to the air or elsewhere in the soil can be prevented.
This will eliminate the risk caused by the contamination. We
have immobilised to several types of contamination.
Chemical remediation in practice
1 Ermelo, The Netherlands (project value 107,000 euros):
chemical oxidation in combination with Multi-Phase Ex-
traction to remove aircraft fuel. Combining these techni-
ques caused a fall in concentrations, which was approved
by the competent authorities.
2 Doetinchem, The Netherlands (project value >700,000 eu-
ros): chemical oxidation in combination with biological sti-
mulation (ENNA): remediation of VOCl contamination with
chemical oxidation led to a dramatic decline in the source
concentrations, which made stimulated biological break-
down possible. Following the remediation, the location was
declared suitable for the development of new apartments.
3 Bergermeer, The Netherlands (project value 15,000 euros):
chemical oxidation of volatile aromatics and mineral oils
with an effectiveness of more than 90%.
4 Pilot Ede in The Netherlands (project value 80,000 euros):
injection of carbon source (pump & treat) combined with
groundwater extraction of heavy metals, including zinc
contamination. Further dispersion of zinc in the groundwa-
ter was stopped completely thanks to the successful immo-
bilisation of the zinc.

Soil protection
Installation and renovationof service stations
and container parks
Good Housekeeping
A clean location is a form of good housekeeping. We have
been assisting landowners in this task and providing liquid-
proof installations at container parks as well as newly built and
renovated service stations since 1995.
In recent years we have laid down numerous liquid-proof
floors and installed hard surfaces and company drainage sy-
stems. Our installations can be admired at service stations,
container parks and industrial and facility installations.
Soil protection measures
Remediating a site will always be more expensive than taking
measures to prevent contamination. Where a site is to be sold,
it can become more valuable because the correct measures
have been taken and the proper provisions have been installed.
Providing a soil protection installation with a suitable drainage
or collection for water and/or products is a customized job.
We look at what type of installation will best suit the soil pol-
luting activity. Depending on the possibilities and wishes of
the client, a suitable paving, drainage and, if necessary, buffer/
collection is installed.
Service stations
We are proud of our experience of working on petrol service
stations for over 15 years. We implement these projects for
major oil and other companies but also for smaller chains and
private forecourts, whether big or modest in scale, complex or
simple. Every year we tackle a variety of service stations.
We have accumulated a wealth of knowledge in the areas of
soil remediation, soil protection installations and civil enginee-
ring works. This wide range of knowledge finds its optimum
application in our work on service stations.
In most projects WeGroSan/HMVT acts as contractor and as
such is responsible for the soil remediation, the civil enginee-
ring works such as the forecourt, the drainage system, hydro-
carbon separator and hard surfacing, including the supply of
underground tanks, piping and electricity.
Thanks to our experience and expertise we are able to carry
out the demolition, soil remediation and construction as a
turnkey project within the allotted time. WeGroSan/HMVT can
offer you a total package.
Container parks
Local government such as councils and intermunicipal coope-
rations are obliged to organize the waste policy, at a local level
as well as with respect to legislation. They run container parks,
among other things, and ensure that domestic waste is col-
lected.
Container parks are the cornerstone of the selective collec-
tion. In order to ensure that this is done optimally with a mi-
nimal impact on the environment, an adapted infrastructure
is necessary.
We offer total solutions for the newly-built or renovation of
container parks; with WeGroSan/HMVT you are assured of a
structured, expert and cost-effective approach.
Industrial & service facilities
Whether it is released during your production process or falls
from the sky, both clean and contaminated water is usually
collected and transported by your company drainage system.
It may then be stored temporarily and/ or treated, after which
it is discharged or reused.
Company drainage systems are often vulnerable. Leakage as a
result of corrosion or wear forms a risk of soil contamination.
Due to the complexity of the systems it is often difficult to ins-
pect and maintain them.
WeGroSan/HMVT takes care of the construction, repair, main-
tenance and inspection of company drainage systems. We can
also see to separating the waste water and rain water, as well
as buffering, recycling and purifying the water.
In addition to company drainage systems, we also take care
of private connections. For the entire Flemish territory zoning
plans were drawn up in order to determine the areas in which
waste water from houses would need to be purified collec-
tively or individually. Those people whose houses cannot be
connected to the public drainage system need to install an IBA
(Individual Wastewater Treatment) to purify their own waste-
water. Supply, installation and maintenance of these systems
also fall within our expertise.
Given our extensive knowledge in the areas of drainage sy-
stems, buffers, purification and process water, WeGroSan/
HMVT can offer you a total solution for your drainage and wa-
ter network.

Water and air purification
Purification of processed airor water,turnkey
solutionsfor temporarywater or air purification
(Mobile) water and air purification
Pure water and clean air. It seems so natural. But behind the
scenes we have to work increasingly hard to keep the quality
of water and air at their present level. This requires innovative
solutions. HMVT and WeGroSan/ HMVT are advisors to indu-
stry in meeting this challenge. We have our own production
facilities for the assembly of water and air purification plants.
Applications: mobile or definitive solutions
We have a broad range of air and water purification installa-
tions at our disposal. We particularly specialise in mobile air/
water purification solutions. Our mobile installations are often
deployed for a few weeks to clean an industrial water or air flow,
for example in the event of major overhaul maintenance at a
client’s premises. For temporary mobile remediation we often
look after the entire project: from consultancy and design to in-
stallation and management, often for a fixed weekly fee.
In addition to mobile installations we also supply customised
solutions to industry and the sales and management of per-
manent installations.
Consultancy & design
For all our services our approach remains practical and aimed
at a solution. The same goes for the approach to purification
of air and water. Our focus is not only on the installation of a
purification plant, but in particular on finding the correct so-
lution jointly with the client. If necessary we will develop and
carry out tests for this purpose in our test labs and will test the
solutions in practice on the scale of a pilot run.
Implementation & management
Our water or air purification installations are assembled and
prepared to specification in our centralised workshops by an
experienced team of engineers, process technologists and elec-
tronics experts. The plant is then installed on site. Maintaining a
water purification plant is commonly not the core activity of any
business. Not only do we construct installations, but if the client
so wishes we can manage the technical side of the installation
as well. We can in these cases guarantee operational security
and achieve the correct quality of the purified water; this is of-
ten carried out for a fixed monthly or annual fee.
Type of installations
We design and construct a variety of installations for various
applications. The appropriate solution is often a comination of
installations with several purification filters. As regards to wa-
ter purification we have a lot of experience with the following
water purification systems:
• Influent/effluent buffers
• Oil/water separation
• Aeration: plate aerators and stripping towers
• Filtration: sand and activated-carbon filtration
• Biological treatment: bio-rotors and bio-reactors
• Chemical treatment: acid and caustic dosages, ozone, UV
and hydrogen peroxide treatments
• Deferrisation plants.
As regards to air purification we have a lot of experience with
the following purification systems:
• Biological air treatment
• Active carbon filtration
• Air washing
• Chemical treatment with ozone, for example
• Catalytic oxidation, possibly including the washing of air
• Incinerator
• Pulsated cold plasma (Corona)
• Mobile installations and pilot installations.
Rental & sale
We both rent out and sell our treatment plants. This may in-
volve either temporary or permanent treatment plants.
European Directives
We design and build all of our plant in accordance with the
applicable EC Machinery Directives. Prior to handover, we con-
duct a Risk Assessment and Evaluation to ensure that the plant
operates both safely and reliably and that it complies with the
ATEX Directives.
In practice
1 Zwolle, The Netherlands (project value approx. 45,000 eu-
ros): chemical reduction of groundwater polluted with chro-
mium VI. Roughly 1,500 m³ of groundwater had accumulated
in an old concrete cellar. We treated this water on site with
chemicals which precipitated the chromium. The cleaned
water could subsequently be pumped out to the drainage
system. The contaminated sludge was removed when the
cellar was demolished together with the polluted rubble and
soil.
2 Amsterdam, The Netherlands (project value approx. 40,000
euros): mobile water purification installation for processing
approximately 2,400 m³ of polluted firefighting water that had
been released during a major fire at an industrial location.
3 Rotterdam, The Netherlands (project value approx. 40,000
euros): mobile air purification installation for the cleaning of
tank vapours consisting of allyl chloride and epichlorohydrin.
4 Beerse, Belgium (project value approx. 350,000 euros):
supply and maintenance of processed water purification
plant.

Test facilities
For bench-scalestudies, research &
developmentand feasibilitytests
‘To measure is to know’
Detailed information about the soil, the groundwater and the
contamination is crucial for on-site remediation. In some cases
prior investigations into drawing up remediation plans are not
sufficiently complete for proposing the optimum on-site reme-
diation technology. For example, information may be missing
that could give an indication of the potential biological activi-
ties on site. This could include the redox conditions, the iron
content and/or the sulphate content. If chemical oxidation is
included, it will be necessary to obtain an impression of the
buffer capacity to be able to calculate the chemical quantities
to be applied.
HMVT has its own laboratory facilities with all the necessary
equipment to carry out these tests. A field sample of water
and/or soil is taken and analysed in several tests under labo-
ratory conditions. The following is a list of experiments and
tests:
For extractive remediation
• Permeability test
• Contaminant analysis
For biological stimulation
• Contaminant analysis
• Buffering capacity
• Attenuation test (aerobic and anaerobic)
• Laboratory analysis (iron, sulphate, DOC, etc.)
For chemical oxidation
• Contaminant analysis
• Determine the buffering capacity
• Determine the matrix requirement
• Attenuation test
Next to the laboratory tests needed to obtain supplementary
information for specific projects, the lab is also used within
HMVT’s Research & Development section. Thanks to our
knowledge, combined with supplementary tests, we are able
to give a verdict on the remediation method and its feasibility
for almost every case of contamination. Carrying on the tradi-
tion of innovation at HMVT, we develop new techniques year
on year. We are able to accomplish this partly thanks to our
own testing space (laboratory) and by carrying out pilot field
trials. Besides research into soil remediation we also carry out
tests to find the most suitable purification methods for air and
water. You will find a series of new technologies developed by
HMVT summarised under the heading ‘In practice’.
In practice
1. Development of new chemical oxidation techniques
2. Development of the sustainable substrate ENNA
	 (ENhanced Natural Attenuation)
3. Development of several substrate compounds for
	 biological breakdown of VOCl
4. Feasibility tests for biological breakdown of contamination
with various substrates
5. Jar tests for the optimisation of water purification
	 methods, e.g. iron removal
6. Dispersion behaviour of ENNA in the soil.

Thermal remediation
Quickand robustin-situ soil remediation with
Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH)
Joint Venture HMVTRS
The most robust way of remediating a location in-situ is to use
thermal remediation. For on-site thermal remediation we use
Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH). ERH is carried out by our
Joint Venture HMVTRS, in which we work together with the
TRS Group. TRS is based in the USA and specialises in soil re-
mediation using ERH.
What is ERH?
During ERH a Power Control Unit (PCU) is used to pass an elec-
trical current through the soil and groundwater. This causes the
soil to heat up to such a level that a wide range of volatile and
semi-volatile contaminants are vaporized. These vapours are
then collected by a soil vapour extraction system or multi-phase
extraction system, after which they are purified above ground.
In contrast to the many other in situ remediation techniques,
the soil is remediated throughout; sand as well as clay and loam
layers with poor permeability can also be tackled effectively.
ERH is therefore able – in contrast to practically every other in-
situ remediation technique – to completely remove all DNAPLs
even in the smallest and very last pore spaces.
During ERH the subsoil is heated in a smooth and controlled
manner. As ERH requires soil moisture to conduct the current, it
is impossible for ERH to completely dry out the soil. The techno-
logy is also intrinsically safe. If the heating stops, for whatever
reason, the steam generation in the subsoil stops immediately.
No backup generators are therefore needed for ERH. And final-
ly: due to the high temperatures during and after the ERH pro-
cess the biological degradation of the chlorinated hydrocarbons
is greatly enhanced.
This polishing effect occurs during the ERH process as well as
the following months as the soil slowly cools.
Advantages of ERH
Thermal remediation with Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) is a
very robust in-situ remediation technique. All other in-situ tech-
niques such as pump & treat, biological techniques, soil vapour
extraction, two-phase extraction, compressed air injection, che-
mical oxidation and chemical reduction can be described as ‘con-
tact sports’. In order to be effective with these methods we need
to get the water/air flow or the chemicals to each pore space.
ERH is not a ‘contact sport’. With ERH we heat up the complete
soil volume, so we automatically reach all pollutants in every tiny
pore space in the soil volume that is being treated. We therefore
do not have to know the ‘exact’ location of the DNAPL to be able
to remediate successfully.
Robust means that we can achieve over 99% removal rates with-
out any rebound effects, even if pure product or DNAPL is pre-
sent.
ERH is not negatively influenced by heterogeneous soils. This is in
contrary to the more classic in-situ remediation techniques, inclu-
ding steam enhanced extraction. There is even a positive effect.
Due to their electrical properties any loam and clay layers are he-
ated up first. As a result of biological activity, higher concentrati-
ons of chloride ions are present around soils containing more pol-
lutants.Asaresult,thezonesthatarepollutedareheatedupfirst.

  • 5. HMVT stands for Hannover Milieu- en Veiligheidstechniek B.V. (Hannover Environmental and Safety Technology). Together with our Belgian subsidiary WeGroSan/HMVT bvba we imple- ment environmental-technical solutions for soil remediation, water and air flow purification and ground and soil protection. This includes: • Complex (in situ) soil and groundwater remediation • Water or air purification, for example when an industrial process needs to be covered for a period of maintenance • Bench-scale or pilot study into the feasibility of solutions • Purification of air flows with cold plasma Corona Technology • Remediation studies, planning and obtaining permits • Installation of liquid-proof hard concrete surfaces, container storage areas and newly built or renovated service stations and tank parks. We have a broad range of clients, ranging from local autho- rities, petrochemical and chemical industries, project develo- pers to other service providers. Our strength lies in the applica- tion of our practical experience combined with our creativity. In brief: we really want to solve your environmental-techni- cal problems! A brief introduction Innovators in Environmental Engineering 5
  • 6. Profile We offer innovativetechnical solutions for soil remediation, water-and airpurification and soil protection 6
  • 7. Soil remediation, water and air purification systems and soil protection The remediation of a diesel crust under a former industrial site, cleaning groundwater contaminated with chlorine under- neath a town, purification of processed air with a (catalytic) in- cinerator or the deployment of a temporary water purification system during the maintenance of an industrial plant. These are all examples of projects we deal with on a daily basis. Whether it involves cleaning soil, water or air, we would like to be your partner in finding innovative but above all practical and feasible solutions. We have been doing this since 1988: effectively, efficiently and saving costs! Landowners have an obligation to prevent soil contamination. A clean site is a form of good housekeeping. We have been helping landowners in this task and installing soil protection measures in newly built and refurbished service stations since 1995. In recent years we have laid down liquid-proof floors, installed hard surfaces and put in company drainage systems numerous times. Our installations can be admired at service stations, waste processors (container storage sites) and indu- strial and facilities installations. Why HMVT and WeGroSan/HMVT? We are an environmental technology company that searches for innovative solutions for the protection and remediation of soil and the purification of water and air flows. Our staff are our most valuable asset: innovative but straightforward with a practical approach and focused on the solution and the custo- mer. That’s why we would like to be your partner! Soil remediation The soil is the starting point for any building development; it supports buildings and infrastructure as well as a significant part of our environmental quality. The soil is used very intensi- vely. Our aim is to remediate contaminated locations as sustai- nably as possible in such a way that the site is also suitable for the needs of the next generation. HMVT and WeGroSan/HMVT are an all-round soil remediation company. We are not restricted to one or two techniques but adapt our approach to the site. More than 20 years ago, we were one of the first companies that started with on-site re- mediation. In the meanwhile we have gained experience of a broad range of remediation techniques, ranging from excava- tion, pump & treat to biological, chemical and thermal tech- nologies. Our strength lies in finding smart solutions. This sometimes means that we advise you to do nothing or just monitor the situation. The right solution for a particular site often lies in a combination of the appropriate remediation techniques. Water and air purification systems We take clean water and pure air for granted, but behind the scenes we have to work increasingly hard to even make this possible. HMVT wishes to be your partner here too, by finding and realising practical solutions. We have our own production hall where the purification installations are assembled to cus- tomised specifications. Our installations are suitable for the purification of industrial processed air or -water. We have a broad range of technologies at our disposal and are particu- larly specialised in mobile installations. 7

  • 9. How we operate Any soil remediation or air or water purification system is al- ways custom made. Besides, we believe that the social and ecological costs of remediation or purification should not be astronomically high. We put together a specialist team for each project with a broad base of expertise. This team resear- ches and designs the most fitting solution with the client. We guarantee that our solutions work and not only install systems but maintain these if you so wish, also on the basis of a fixed price. Innovation Innovation is in our genes. Our research team is always sear- ching for new solutions, whether this concerns soil remediati- on or purification of water or air or civil engineering works. We work a lot with students, research institutes and consultan- cies. A good example of our innovative powers is the continu- ed development of ‘Corona Pulse Technology’ jointly with the Technical University of Eindhoven. Stated briefly, this method purifies air by creating ‘mini-lightning’. This is a highly ener- gy-efficient method for getting rid of odours from industrial vapours. You can find more information about this promising method of air purification at www.corona-airtreatment.com. Our company HMVT and WeGroSan/HMVT employ approximately 40 expe- rienced environmental experts and technicians. On average, our employees have been working in this field for ten years. Quality and safety are at the core of our company strategy. The personnel we deploy, the projects we carry out and the installations we assemble and maintain comply with all the standards, ranging from ISO 9001, VCA** and the Achilles Pro- tocol to the BRL guidelines and CE marks. ATEX systems are also in safe hands with us. Carbon Footprint We offset the Carbon Footprint of our buildings and our travel miles through the Trees for All foundation. Your project can also be offset via this foundation. We not only compensate but we also continually search for greener ways to decontaminate soil, for example. We have developed our own Carbon Foot- print Calculator for this purpose and are experimenting with geothermal, wind and solar energy to run our installations. You can find more information on www.treesforall.nl and www.hmvt.eu. 9

  • 11. Excavation Excavation is a fast and efficient way of removing contamina- tion. Depending on the situation a suitable method is chosen. It is, for example, often necessary to take stability measures to safeguard nearby structures. Soldier piles, sheet piling, sheeting boxes and excavation tubes are techniques that we frequently use and in which we have gained considerable ex- perience. At sites that are difficult to access, specially adapted equipment will be used. Sometimes it may be appropriate to carry out manual excavations or excavation using soil suction. WeGroSan/HMVT has a wealth of experience in similar pro- jects, and based on its expertise is able to deploy a suitable method. In practice 1 Edingen (project value 150,000 euros): excavation of the centre up to 7 metres below ground level using a sheeting box to safeguard the adjacent structure. 2 Flémalle (project value 120,000 euros): considering the very small space it was decided to excavate the contamina- ted ground in the immediate vicinity of the building using tubes up to 12 m below ground level. The first excavated tube was used as a pump pit in order to be able to carry out the rest of the excavation in a dry area. 3 Meerle (project value 35,000 euros): : excavation in private garden. In view of the small area excavation work was car- ried out alongside the building using a small aluminium box. For the removal of the highly contaminated soil from the crawl space a ground suction system was used. Pump & Treat or Extractive Remediation Extractive remediation techniques are techniques where the contamination is extracted from the soil and is often treated above the ground. We apply the following techniques: • soil vapour extraction • compressed air injection • various types of groundwater extraction - dewatering by means of vacuum drainage - gravity drainage - Multi-Phase Extraction - deep-well drainage In practice 1 Antwerp, Belgium (project value > 2,000,000 euros): large- scale NAPL remediation with more than 600 remediation filters. A NAPL layer of more than 1,500 m3 was removed. 2 Antwerp, Belgium (project value 280,000 euros): combi- nation of NAPL remediation with groundwater extraction, compressed air injection and soil vapour extraction. The NAPL layer was completely removed. 3 Dendermonde, Belgium (project value 92,000 euros): re- moval of NAPL layer using Multi-Phase Extraction. The NAPL layer was completely removed thus achieving the re- mediation objectives. Biological remediations Many of our remediation methods also involve a biological phase in which, for example, the residual contamination in the plume is broken down biologically after removal of the core. Depending on the nature and the seriousness of the residual contamination, the breakdown is stimulated by introducing oxygen and/or a carbon source and nutrients. We use both aerobic and anaerobic breakdown processes. We design and monitor these degradation processes in-house. In some cases natural degradation is such that monitoring is sufficient. We apply the following techniques: • Bio-venting the unsaturated zone • Air-sparging the saturated zone • Shock load injections (one-off nutrient injections) • Continuous injection by means of extraction and infiltra- tion of the groundwater with nutrients. Biological techni- ques are a particularly suitable and economic alternative in plume areas or as a biological barrier. 11
  • 12. 10 Soil remediation All-rounders in traditionaland on-site chemical, pump&treatand biological remediation
  • 13. Aerobic degradation in practice 1 Vilvoorde, Belgium (project value 800,000 euros): combi- nation of Multi-Phase Extraction, compressed air injection and soil vapour extraction. By means of compressed air in- jection, the chlorohydrocarbon contamination was remedi- ated down to below the post-remediation value imposed by the Belgian authorities. Soil vapour extraction ensured that the vapours released in the compressed air injection process were extracted. 2 Oosterhout, The Netherlands (project value >200,000 eu- ros): combination of chemical oxidation with compressed air injection and soil vapour extraction. The volatile aro- matics and mineral oil contamination present in the plume area were reduced to below the post-remediation value by means of compressed air injection. The combination of chemical oxidation and compressed air injection resulted in reduction of the load by more than 90%. 3 Bilthoven, The Netherlands (project value 205,000 euros): combination of compressed air injection with nutrient in- jection. The mineral oil and BTEX contamination found in the groundwater was remediated and certified by the com- petent authorities. Depending on the specific situation of the location, we will se- lect our nutrients, inject compressed air, oxygen releasing salts or nutrients. We also regularly inject the slow-release electron donor developed by our R&D department on the basis of soya oil, namely, ENNA. Thermal remediation The classic in-situ techniques are often insufficient to efficien- tly removing a true hotspot with DNAPL. In such cases we can deploy a thermal technique called ‘Electrical Resistance He- ating’ (ERH). This technique involves heating up the soil and groundwater to almost 100o C, whereby the chlorinated hydro- carbons simply evaporate from the soil. With this technology it is possible to achieve very high returns, up to more than 99%. We carry out ERH together with TRS Group from the United States under the Joint Venture HMVTRS. The TRS Group has more than 10 years’ experience with ERH and has already suc- cessfully completed dozens of projects. More information about Thermal remediation can be found on page 28 and 29. ENNA Natural breakdown of VOCl contaminations (including the degre- asing substances Per and Tri) is possible with the right Redox con- ditions and in the presence of a substrate (DOC). Per and Tri can be degraded under anaerobic conditions. Micro-organisms use a different substance (the substrate) as food and break down the chlorated hydrocarbons during the process. The contamination is broken down to a harmless ethane in se- veral steps. This means that for Per and Tri, but also for the waste products Cis and VC, this contamination can only be broken down anaerobically. In practice we often encounter VOCl contaminations where some degradation is taking place, but the REDOX conditions and the levels of natural substrate (DOC) in the soil are not sufficient to attain a stable end situation without active intervention. It is pos- sible to promote the breakdown by introducing a substrate (a source of DOC) into the ground. ENNA promotes the sustained breakdown of VOCl. For ENNA a mixture of substrate is injected only once into the source. The principal constituent of this substrate consists of vegetable soya oils. Care must be taken that no crust is created at the top. That is why with ENNA the soya is added as a suspension (10 to 15% soyavegetableoils).Moreoverthesoyaactsasasourceofcarbon to promotesustained breakdown over 5 to 10 years. Therefore an amount is introduced so in principle a single injection is sufficient. This helps to reduce costs. We have applied the ENNA concept in many locations with great success. 13
  • 14. 10 Soil remediation All-rounders in traditionaland on-site chemical, pump&treatand biological remediation
  • 15. Anaerobic breakdown in practice 1 Dordrecht, The Netherlands (project value 73,000 euros): groundwater extraction and infiltration of groundwater with biological stimulants. By pumping groundwater to the surf- ace, providing a substrate and reinfiltrating this mixture, we successfully remediated a large plume area by means of an- aerobic breakdown. 2 Zwolle, The Netherlands (project value 700,000 euros): chemical oxidation in combination with stimulated break- down. Chemical oxidation removed a large part of the VOCl source. Biological breakdown followed successful stimula- tion after the injection of ENNA, developed in-house. The concentrations fell to below the reconditioning values but for one monitoring tube. 3 Veghel, The Netherlands (project value 350,000 euros): sti- mulated breakdown of VOCl contamination with ENNA. Em- placement of bio-screen with injection of long-lasting ENNA carbon source. The pollutants in the plume area, which extended a few hundred metres, were stopped by three bio-screens. Chemical Remediations Chemical techniques are increasingly used to tackle contami- nation problems, on the one hand to break down contamina- tion (for example oxidation and reduction), and on the other hand to fix contamination in the soil. Chemical oxidation A technology that has proven itself in recent years is chemical oxidation. With the help of chemical oxidation we are able to obtain a high rate of remediation within a short period of time. This technique is often particularly applied to core areas with high pollutant concentrations. Depending on the local conta- mination situation we apply the following chemical oxidation techniques: • Chemical oxidation using hydrogen peroxide (Fenton’s reagent) • Application of ‘Enhanced’ Fenton’s • Chemical oxidation using permanganate • Chemical oxidation using activated persulphate. Chemical reduction In addition to chemical oxidation, we also apply chemical re- duction by injecting zero-charged nano ferrite powder. We of- ten combine this method with biological degradation together with the ENNA concept: FENNA. Immobilisation Not all pollutants are necessarily suited to remediate by che- mical or biological extraction, for example heavy metals. A (partly) mobile contamination can also be immobilised so that escape to the air or elsewhere in the soil can be prevented. This will eliminate the risk caused by the contamination. We have immobilised to several types of contamination. Chemical remediation in practice 1 Ermelo, The Netherlands (project value 107,000 euros): chemical oxidation in combination with Multi-Phase Ex- traction to remove aircraft fuel. Combining these techni- ques caused a fall in concentrations, which was approved by the competent authorities. 2 Doetinchem, The Netherlands (project value >700,000 eu- ros): chemical oxidation in combination with biological sti- mulation (ENNA): remediation of VOCl contamination with chemical oxidation led to a dramatic decline in the source concentrations, which made stimulated biological break- down possible. Following the remediation, the location was declared suitable for the development of new apartments. 3 Bergermeer, The Netherlands (project value 15,000 euros): chemical oxidation of volatile aromatics and mineral oils with an effectiveness of more than 90%. 4 Pilot Ede in The Netherlands (project value 80,000 euros): injection of carbon source (pump & treat) combined with groundwater extraction of heavy metals, including zinc contamination. Further dispersion of zinc in the groundwa- ter was stopped completely thanks to the successful immo- bilisation of the zinc. 15
  • 16. Soil protection Installation and renovationof service stations and container parks
  • 17. Good Housekeeping A clean location is a form of good housekeeping. We have been assisting landowners in this task and providing liquid- proof installations at container parks as well as newly built and renovated service stations since 1995. In recent years we have laid down numerous liquid-proof floors and installed hard surfaces and company drainage sy- stems. Our installations can be admired at service stations, container parks and industrial and facility installations. Soil protection measures Remediating a site will always be more expensive than taking measures to prevent contamination. Where a site is to be sold, it can become more valuable because the correct measures have been taken and the proper provisions have been installed. Providing a soil protection installation with a suitable drainage or collection for water and/or products is a customized job. We look at what type of installation will best suit the soil pol- luting activity. Depending on the possibilities and wishes of the client, a suitable paving, drainage and, if necessary, buffer/ collection is installed. Service stations We are proud of our experience of working on petrol service stations for over 15 years. We implement these projects for major oil and other companies but also for smaller chains and private forecourts, whether big or modest in scale, complex or simple. Every year we tackle a variety of service stations. We have accumulated a wealth of knowledge in the areas of soil remediation, soil protection installations and civil enginee- ring works. This wide range of knowledge finds its optimum application in our work on service stations. In most projects WeGroSan/HMVT acts as contractor and as such is responsible for the soil remediation, the civil enginee- ring works such as the forecourt, the drainage system, hydro- carbon separator and hard surfacing, including the supply of underground tanks, piping and electricity. Thanks to our experience and expertise we are able to carry out the demolition, soil remediation and construction as a turnkey project within the allotted time. WeGroSan/HMVT can offer you a total package. Container parks Local government such as councils and intermunicipal coope- rations are obliged to organize the waste policy, at a local level as well as with respect to legislation. They run container parks, among other things, and ensure that domestic waste is col- lected. Container parks are the cornerstone of the selective collec- tion. In order to ensure that this is done optimally with a mi- nimal impact on the environment, an adapted infrastructure is necessary. We offer total solutions for the newly-built or renovation of container parks; with WeGroSan/HMVT you are assured of a structured, expert and cost-effective approach. Industrial & service facilities Whether it is released during your production process or falls from the sky, both clean and contaminated water is usually collected and transported by your company drainage system. It may then be stored temporarily and/ or treated, after which it is discharged or reused. Company drainage systems are often vulnerable. Leakage as a result of corrosion or wear forms a risk of soil contamination. Due to the complexity of the systems it is often difficult to ins- pect and maintain them. WeGroSan/HMVT takes care of the construction, repair, main- tenance and inspection of company drainage systems. We can also see to separating the waste water and rain water, as well as buffering, recycling and purifying the water. In addition to company drainage systems, we also take care of private connections. For the entire Flemish territory zoning plans were drawn up in order to determine the areas in which waste water from houses would need to be purified collec- tively or individually. Those people whose houses cannot be connected to the public drainage system need to install an IBA (Individual Wastewater Treatment) to purify their own waste- water. Supply, installation and maintenance of these systems also fall within our expertise. Given our extensive knowledge in the areas of drainage sy- stems, buffers, purification and process water, WeGroSan/ HMVT can offer you a total solution for your drainage and wa- ter network. 17

  • 20. Water and air purification Purification of processed airor water, turnkey solutionsfor temporarywater or air purification
  • 21. (Mobile) water and air purification Pure water and clean air. It seems so natural. But behind the scenes we have to work increasingly hard to keep the quality of water and air at their present level. This requires innovative solutions. HMVT and WeGroSan/ HMVT are advisors to indu- stry in meeting this challenge. We have our own production facilities for the assembly of water and air purification plants. Applications: mobile or definitive solutions We have a broad range of air and water purification installa- tions at our disposal. We particularly specialise in mobile air/ water purification solutions. Our mobile installations are often deployed for a few weeks to clean an industrial water or air flow, for example in the event of major overhaul maintenance at a client’s premises. For temporary mobile remediation we often look after the entire project: from consultancy and design to in- stallation and management, often for a fixed weekly fee. In addition to mobile installations we also supply customised solutions to industry and the sales and management of per- manent installations. Consultancy & design For all our services our approach remains practical and aimed at a solution. The same goes for the approach to purification of air and water. Our focus is not only on the installation of a purification plant, but in particular on finding the correct so- lution jointly with the client. If necessary we will develop and carry out tests for this purpose in our test labs and will test the solutions in practice on the scale of a pilot run. Implementation & management Our water or air purification installations are assembled and prepared to specification in our centralised workshops by an experienced team of engineers, process technologists and elec- tronics experts. The plant is then installed on site. Maintaining a water purification plant is commonly not the core activity of any business. Not only do we construct installations, but if the client so wishes we can manage the technical side of the installation as well. We can in these cases guarantee operational security and achieve the correct quality of the purified water; this is of- ten carried out for a fixed monthly or annual fee. Type of installations We design and construct a variety of installations for various applications. The appropriate solution is often a comination of installations with several purification filters. As regards to wa- ter purification we have a lot of experience with the following water purification systems: • Influent/effluent buffers • Oil/water separation • Aeration: plate aerators and stripping towers • Filtration: sand and activated-carbon filtration • Biological treatment: bio-rotors and bio-reactors • Chemical treatment: acid and caustic dosages, ozone, UV and hydrogen peroxide treatments • Deferrisation plants. As regards to air purification we have a lot of experience with the following purification systems: • Biological air treatment • Active carbon filtration • Air washing • Chemical treatment with ozone, for example • Catalytic oxidation, possibly including the washing of air • Incinerator • Pulsated cold plasma (Corona) • Mobile installations and pilot installations. Rental & sale We both rent out and sell our treatment plants. This may in- volve either temporary or permanent treatment plants. European Directives We design and build all of our plant in accordance with the applicable EC Machinery Directives. Prior to handover, we con- duct a Risk Assessment and Evaluation to ensure that the plant operates both safely and reliably and that it complies with the ATEX Directives. In practice 1 Zwolle, The Netherlands (project value approx. 45,000 eu- ros): chemical reduction of groundwater polluted with chro- mium VI. Roughly 1,500 m³ of groundwater had accumulated in an old concrete cellar. We treated this water on site with chemicals which precipitated the chromium. The cleaned water could subsequently be pumped out to the drainage system. The contaminated sludge was removed when the cellar was demolished together with the polluted rubble and soil. 2 Amsterdam, The Netherlands (project value approx. 40,000 euros): mobile water purification installation for processing approximately 2,400 m³ of polluted firefighting water that had been released during a major fire at an industrial location. 3 Rotterdam, The Netherlands (project value approx. 40,000 euros): mobile air purification installation for the cleaning of tank vapours consisting of allyl chloride and epichlorohydrin. 4 Beerse, Belgium (project value approx. 350,000 euros): supply and maintenance of processed water purification plant. 21
  • 22. Test facilities For bench-scalestudies, research & developmentand feasibilitytests
  • 23. ‘To measure is to know’ Detailed information about the soil, the groundwater and the contamination is crucial for on-site remediation. In some cases prior investigations into drawing up remediation plans are not sufficiently complete for proposing the optimum on-site reme- diation technology. For example, information may be missing that could give an indication of the potential biological activi- ties on site. This could include the redox conditions, the iron content and/or the sulphate content. If chemical oxidation is included, it will be necessary to obtain an impression of the buffer capacity to be able to calculate the chemical quantities to be applied. HMVT has its own laboratory facilities with all the necessary equipment to carry out these tests. A field sample of water and/or soil is taken and analysed in several tests under labo- ratory conditions. The following is a list of experiments and tests: For extractive remediation • Permeability test • Contaminant analysis For biological stimulation • Contaminant analysis • Buffering capacity • Attenuation test (aerobic and anaerobic) • Laboratory analysis (iron, sulphate, DOC, etc.) For chemical oxidation • Contaminant analysis • Determine the buffering capacity • Determine the matrix requirement • Attenuation test Next to the laboratory tests needed to obtain supplementary information for specific projects, the lab is also used within HMVT’s Research & Development section. Thanks to our knowledge, combined with supplementary tests, we are able to give a verdict on the remediation method and its feasibility for almost every case of contamination. Carrying on the tradi- tion of innovation at HMVT, we develop new techniques year on year. We are able to accomplish this partly thanks to our own testing space (laboratory) and by carrying out pilot field trials. Besides research into soil remediation we also carry out tests to find the most suitable purification methods for air and water. You will find a series of new technologies developed by HMVT summarised under the heading ‘In practice’. In practice 1. Development of new chemical oxidation techniques 2. Development of the sustainable substrate ENNA (ENhanced Natural Attenuation) 3. Development of several substrate compounds for biological breakdown of VOCl 4. Feasibility tests for biological breakdown of contamination with various substrates 5. Jar tests for the optimisation of water purification methods, e.g. iron removal 6. Dispersion behaviour of ENNA in the soil. 23

  • 29. Joint Venture HMVTRS The most robust way of remediating a location in-situ is to use thermal remediation. For on-site thermal remediation we use Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH). ERH is carried out by our Joint Venture HMVTRS, in which we work together with the TRS Group. TRS is based in the USA and specialises in soil re- mediation using ERH. What is ERH? During ERH a Power Control Unit (PCU) is used to pass an elec- trical current through the soil and groundwater. This causes the soil to heat up to such a level that a wide range of volatile and semi-volatile contaminants are vaporized. These vapours are then collected by a soil vapour extraction system or multi-phase extraction system, after which they are purified above ground. In contrast to the many other in situ remediation techniques, the soil is remediated throughout; sand as well as clay and loam layers with poor permeability can also be tackled effectively. ERH is therefore able – in contrast to practically every other in- situ remediation technique – to completely remove all DNAPLs even in the smallest and very last pore spaces. During ERH the subsoil is heated in a smooth and controlled manner. As ERH requires soil moisture to conduct the current, it is impossible for ERH to completely dry out the soil. The techno- logy is also intrinsically safe. If the heating stops, for whatever reason, the steam generation in the subsoil stops immediately. No backup generators are therefore needed for ERH. And final- ly: due to the high temperatures during and after the ERH pro- cess the biological degradation of the chlorinated hydrocarbons is greatly enhanced. This polishing effect occurs during the ERH process as well as the following months as the soil slowly cools. Advantages of ERH Thermal remediation with Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) is a very robust in-situ remediation technique. All other in-situ tech- niques such as pump & treat, biological techniques, soil vapour extraction, two-phase extraction, compressed air injection, che- mical oxidation and chemical reduction can be described as ‘con- tact sports’. In order to be effective with these methods we need to get the water/air flow or the chemicals to each pore space. ERH is not a ‘contact sport’. With ERH we heat up the complete soil volume, so we automatically reach all pollutants in every tiny pore space in the soil volume that is being treated. We therefore do not have to know the ‘exact’ location of the DNAPL to be able to remediate successfully. Robust means that we can achieve over 99% removal rates with- out any rebound effects, even if pure product or DNAPL is pre- sent. ERH is not negatively influenced by heterogeneous soils. This is in contrary to the more classic in-situ remediation techniques, inclu- ding steam enhanced extraction. There is even a positive effect. Due to their electrical properties any loam and clay layers are he- ated up first. As a result of biological activity, higher concentrati- ons of chloride ions are present around soils containing more pol- lutants.Asaresult,thezonesthatarepollutedareheatedupfirst. More info?
