1. CHANCE OU MALCHANCE,
QUI PEUT LE DIRE ?
Good Luck or Bad Luck?
Il était une fois, dans un village, un homme
pauvre qui possédait un très beau cheval. Le
cheval était si beau que les seigneurs du château
désiraient l’acheter, et lui en offraient une somme
généreuse. Mais chaque fois, il leur opposait le
même refus :
― Pour moi, ce cheval n'est pas seulement
une monture, c'est un ami, répondait-il. Et
comment voulez-vous que je vous vende un ami?
Once upon a time, there was a poor farmer
who had a beautiful horse. In fact, the horse was
so beautiful that various lords wanted to buy it.
Each lord offered a generous sum of money for
the horse, but each time the poor man refused
the offer.
"My horse is not just a horse; he is my friend.
How could I sell my friend?" said the poor
farmer.

2. Un beau matin, en se rendant à l'étable, il
découvrit que le cheval avait disparu. Les
villageois s’écrièrent, triomphants :
― On te l'avait bien dit ! Tu aurais mieux fait
de le vendre. Maintenant, tu vois, on te l'a
volé... Quelle malchance !
Le vieil homme repartit :
― Chance, malchance, qui peut le dire ?
One morning, when the farmer went to his
barn, he found that his horse had
disappeared.
The villagers said, "We told you that you
would be better off if you sold the horse. Now
look, it's been stolen! What bad luck!“
The farmer replied, "Bad luck? Good luck?
Who knows?"

3. On ne manqua pas de se moquer de lui.
Mais au bout d’une quinzaine de jours, le
cheval revint, suivi de toute une horde de
chevaux sauvages : il s'était échappé, avait
séduit une belle jument, puis l’avait ramenée
avec le reste de la horde.
― Quelle chance ! s’exclamèrent les
villageois.
A week later, the horse returned a
beautiful mare and a herd of wild horses
from the hills.
"Lucky you!" exclaimed the villagers to
the poor farmer.

4. Le vieil homme et son fils s’attelèrent à la
tâche, ardue s’il en est, de dresser ces farouches
étalons. Cependant, une semaine plus tard, au
cours d’un exercice, son fils fut désarçonné par
une bête fougueuse, et se cassa la jambe dans
sa chute.
― Quelle malchance ! déplorèrent ses amis.
Que vas-tu faire, toi qui es déjà si pauvre, à
présent que ton fils, ton unique gagne-pain, ne
peut plus te venir en aide ?
― Chance, malchance, qui peut le dire ?
répondit notre homme.
The old farmer and his son started the
difficult work of taming the wild horses. However,
a week later, the farmer's son broke his leg after
being thrown off by one of the wild horses.
"What bad luck!" exclaimed the farmer's
friends. "You're already poor and now your son
cannot help you with your hard work!"
The farmer's only reaction was, "Bad luck?
Good luck? Who knows?"

5. Quelques jours plus tard, le seigneur et son
armée firent irruption dans le village, et
enrôlèrent de force tous les jeunes gens en âge
de porter les armes.
Tous... sauf le fils du vieil homme, qui était
invalide.
― Quelle chance ! s’exclamèrent les villageois.
Voilà que tous nos fils sont partis à la guerre,
mais toi, tu es le seul à pouvoir garder le tien
auprès de toi…
A few days later, the army marched into
the village and conscripted every able-bodied
youth they found there.
However, when they saw the farmer's son
with his broken leg, they let him off.
"Lucky you!" exclaimed the villagers. "All
our sons are forced to fight in battle, but your
son gets to stay home with you.”

6. L’avenir nous est livré par fragments. Nous
ignorons ce qu'il nous réserve, mais notre
attitude est déterminante : si nous faisons
confiance à Dieu, sachant que toutes choses
concourent au bien de ceux qui L’aiment, les
portes du bonheur et d’une plus grande
créativité s’ouvrent devant nous.
We only see the future bit by bit. We do
not know what it holds, but it's our attitude
towards it that is the most important. If we
trust God, knowing that all things work
together for good to those who love him,
then the doors to greater happiness are
opened to us.
