“Our aim is to see ourselves surpassed…” – Mary Breckinridge, Founder, Frontier School
The Frontier Student Is a working adult Living in a rural and/or health professional shortage area Female Late 30s
Working with adult, distance education students Discussions arose regarding the best use of technology for our students Students expressed a lack of time to meet school obligations Faculty expressed desire to address emerging technologies
NEPR Grant FSMFN received a Nurse Education, Practice and Retention (NEPR) grant from HRSA The overarching goal of the grant was to graduate technologically competent advance practice nurses Among the objectives were: Improve student learning outcomes by introducing new technologies for delivery of didactic educational content Increase study opportunities for working adults by converting current and creating new media rich lecture content and learning activities that can be consumed from students’ desktops or from a mobile media device Introduce iPod Pilot Project which will provide iPod Touches to 150 new students
Mobile Device Committee Committee was formed to carry out the grant objectives made up of representatives from across the institution plans are in place to make it a standing committee with a broader scope
Mobile Growth Currently 5.3 billion mobile subscribers (http://mobithinking.com/stats-corner/global-mobile-statistics-2011-all-quality-mobile-marketing-research-mobile-web-stats-su) 85% of Americans 18 and older own a cell phone (http://www.pewinternet.org/Infographics/2011/Generations-and-cell-phones.aspx) 40% of American adults use the internet, email or instant messaging on a mobile phone (http://www.pewinternet.org/Reports/2010/Mobile-Access-2010.aspx) Global mobile data traffic nearly tripled in 2010 (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns341/ns525/ns537/ns705/ns827/white_paper_c11-520862.pdf) Mobile internet usage is projected to take over desktop usage in 2014 (http://tag.microsoft.com/community/tag-blog-item /11-021/The_Growth_of_Mobile_Marketing_and_Tagging.aspx?category =industry%20news)

Our Mobile Strategy Putting media into courses podcasts of lectures clinical videos narrated PowerPoints
Course Media Each course has a Media Folder with instructions detailing how to get this content on their mobile devices
Course Media
Our Mobile Strategy Making faculty aware of different tools available to create mobile content Gabcast, Audacity Camtasia
Our Mobile Strategy Library resources available on mobile platforms Clinical reporting software for mobile devices
Our Mobile Strategy Provided iPod Touch to pilot group of students (n=150) As of June 2010, all incoming students are required to have an Apple mobile device.
During the last 12 weeks, how often did you use your mobile device to access information to assist you with schoolwork? Percentage of students answering “occasionally,” “often,” or “very often”:
Comments “Absolutely fantastic. I carried my iPod with me everywhere.” “Awesome!! With the audio and visual I felt like I was sitting in a class.” “I am a big fan of audio lecture. Allows for listening during exercise and other activities.” “I enjoyed listening to the iPod lectures both for course content but also because it made me feel more connected to hear the instructor’s voice.” “I have used the downloaded media in every course. Being able to download the media on my iPad and taking it with me gives opportunities to study anywhere.”
Comments “I loved being able to listen to the media on my ipod while I was vacuuming, doing dishes, driving, etc. and loved being able to listen to it over and over.” “I think the downloadable media is critical. I am able to take it everywhere with me and listening while driving helps with time management.” “LOVE all the downloadable media!!! This is an EXCELLENT learning resource!!” “The iPod videos were very helpful as I was on the go a lot and couldn’t be tied down to the computer for lectures.”
Student Concerns “The only issue I had with downloadable media has nothing to do with the program. I just happen to live [in] a rural area where I can either get dial-up or satellite for my internet connection and neither of these options are truly “high speed” so I experienced lags in videos which makes it a bit difficult to watch what is termed as a short video.” “WiFi not available in most places here in rural area making in not useful.”
Student Concerns “It would be helpful to have inservices from IT on how to use the apps on our phone with the course.” “I need assist [sic] with learning how to use it.” “If I had instruction on how to use it with school work I would have used it.” “I couldn’t figure out how to download the information to my iPhone.” “ I think a class in downloading to iPods during Frontier Bound would be extremely helpful.”
Future Implications Issues to work on technical problems training staying current CMS integration E-textbooks Future plans Use iTunes U  epub format Institutional App

  • 16. During the last 12 weeks, how often did you use your mobile device to access information to assist you with schoolwork? Percentage of students answering “occasionally,” “often,” or “very often”:

  1. Mary Breckinridge founded the Frontier Nursing Service Southeastern KY in 1925 as a public health project aimed at serving mother and babies. The Service used the model of the English and French midwife who was also trained as a nurse. British midwives came over to work. When WWII broke out, the British midwives wanted to return home and Mrs. Breckinridge saw that she would need to train a new batch of nurse-midwives. The Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery was started in 1939. In 1989, with a declining birth rate in Leslie County, but a need for more nurse-midwives nationwide, the Community-based Nurse-Midwifery Education Program was started.FSMFN now has >1200 students from all 50 states and several foreign countries seeking MSN to become CNM, FNP, and WHNP. We also offer a DNP.
  2. All students are RNs with a year of experience2010 enrollment - 75% were in rural counties and 75% in health professional shortage areas (a location can be rural AND HPSA or just one or the other).3% male Most students fall between 30-39 with a large portion 40-49, handful are over 60
  3. HRSA=Health Resources and Services Administration
  4. After we got the grant, mobile technology exploded.Ask how many people have a cell phone? Smart phone?Mobile devices are now nearly ubiquitous
  5. Camtasia
  6. iPod page within Media folder in an ANGEL coursePodcasts on iPhone
  7. Faculty could call a phone number to record audio, then our MMT would d/l the file and post in courseAll faculty members received a copy of Camtasia as well as a webcam for recording videos. Camtasia also used for narrating PowerPoints. Most faculty ran with idea, others could call for one on one instruction with MMT
  8. Dynamed, Epocrates Essentials, Natural StandardClinical reporting – tracking clinical activity (number of visits, procedures, etc.)
  9. How did we evaluate the project?Course evaluations for courses that had the media asked:
  10. We also conduct student surveys after each term. That survey asks:We are able to filter for students in the pilot group, and they do seem to use mobile devices more
  11. Quantitative data shows that students are using the media and the devices, but the qualitative data gives a better insight into how students are actually using the devices and media.
  12. However, there are concerns…
  13. Concerns let us know what issues to work onStudents still express a lack of understanding using the media and devicesHave expressed want/need for more training, but we have limited f2f time, and these concepts do not lend themselves to being taught at a distance (even though there are some solutions they have drawbacks)Students have also asked for CMS integration, i.e. an ANGEL app or easier access to ANGEL via a mobile deviceStudents also have asked for their textbooks to be available electronically – e-books are an issue unto themselvesLooking into iTunes U – think it will be easierCreating eupbs using free software to make faculty and student created content (LO’s, study guides) available in itunes for student download. Feel like next step is an institutional app – school info, etc., but $$U of Phoenix just released an app: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/28/university-phoenix-app_n_855202.html
