GE Power & Water
Solving The Problem
of Water Quality and
Demand
2
• Municipalities continue to evolve, creating an environment that is ripe with challenges yet
equally rich with opportunities
• An escalating crisis worldwide is water scarcity. For municipalities, this issue is exacerbated by
new housing developments which require water treatment plants to meet the needs of larger
populations and diverse geographies
• Environmental policies are becoming more stringent—and influential. New nutrient limits on
discharge of wastewater require action and compliance from municipalities
Municipal Waste Water Problem
3
Power Industry Water Shortage
• It is estimated that the global demand for electricity will double in the next 20 years. Since large
amounts of water is required to produce electricity, demand for water will triple in the same
time frame
• World’s water resources are limited, this can pose significant limitations on potential industry
growth and profitability
• Facilities face stringent regulations related to water and solid waste discharge, CO2 reductions,
selenium, mercury and heavy metal removal, and air quality
4
GE Technology & Solutions
With ever increasing regulatory, environmental and financial pressures on today’s municipalities
and the power industry, GE provides innovations in chemical and equipment technology to enhance
municipalities’ efficiency and excellence in wastewater treatment and reuse, and drinking water
treatment while safeguarding natural resources and saving money
5
Solutions for Municipal Waste Water
ZeeWeed membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems combine proven ultrafiltration (UF)
technology with biological treatment for municipal wastewater treatment and water
reuse, resulting in consistent, high quality effluent suitable for any discharge or reuse
application.
ZeeWeed ultrafiltration (UF) systems are proven to consistently outperform
conventional filtration technology while meeting or exceeding regulatory
requirements, regardless of source water quality.
Electrodialysis reversal (EDR) products are ideal to desalinate challenging
brackish waters such as surface water and wastewater. Applications for EDR
technology include municipal drinking water and wastewater treatment and reuse
projects.
Reverse osmosis systems deliver high performance water purification at the
lowest life-cycle costs. The pre-engineered systems are built with high-quality
components such as GE’s spiral-wound membranes—cost-effective thin-film
elements used to remove salts and separate organic material by molecular weight
or particle charge.
6
FuelSolv™ Solutions for alternative fuels allow coal plants to burn lower-grade coal
and gas turbines to switch to heavy fuel or crude oil.
DusTreat™ Dust control programs including underground, service and haul road
treatments to help reduce water usage and operating costs. A range of chemical
treatment solutions, including DusTreat™ and ScaleTrol to control dust emissions,
to help reduce water usage, control emissions and reduce costs.
Zero Liquid Discharge systems offer extensive experience in evaporation and
crystallization to eliminate wastewater discharge and enable the recovery of
valuable byproducts.
Chemical and Monitoring solutions—GenGard for cooling; OptiSperse, CorTrol,
and Steamate for Cycled Chemistry; and TrueSense monitoring—optimize plant
productivity and water systems while safeguarding assets and ensuring
environmental protection.

ZeeWeed® Membrane Technology
• ZeeWeed® Ultrafiltration (UF)
membrane is a pressure-driven barrier
to suspended solids, bacteria, viruses,
endotoxins and other pathogens used
to produce water with very high purity
and low silt density
• It can serve as a treatment for surface
water, ground water, and biologically
treated municipal effluent (membrane
bioreactor and tertiary treatment)
• It can also serve as a pre-treatment
before reverse osmosis and other
membrane systems
The global installed base of GE's ZeeWeed® ultrafiltration (UF) membrane has the capacity to enable the
reuse of over 425 million gallons of water per day for a variety of uses, equivalent to the daily water
consumption of 4.7 million average Americans
8
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) – The Process
• The ZeeWeed membrane bioreactor (MBR) process is a GE technology that consists of a suspended
growth biological reactor integrated with an ultrafiltration membrane system, using the ZeeWeed
hollow fiber membrane
• ZeeWeed ultrafiltration membranes are immersed in an aeration tank, in direct contact with mixed
liquor. Through the use of a permeate pump, a vacuum is applied to a header connected to the
membranes
• The vacuum draws the treated water through the hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes. Permeate is
then directed to disinfection or discharge facilities
• Intermittent airflow is introduced to the bottom of the membrane module, producing turbulence that
scours the external surface of the hollow fibers. This scouring action transfers rejected solids away
from the membrane surface
9
Membrane Bioreactor - Features and Benefits
Physical ultrafiltration (UF) barrier
• Produces a high quality effluent suitable for direct reuse
Unmatched fiber ruggedness
• Ensures a longer membrane life in harsh wastewater operating environments
Hollow fiber geometry
• Provides a greater filtration surface area which reduces plant footprint and
effectively distributes cleaning solutions
Effective backpulse cleaning
• Maintains long-term, peak system performance and provides a simple, rapid
method of recovery in the event of a plant upset
Automated in-situ cleaning
• Simplifies system operation and maintenance, while reducing operating costs
"Self-healing" fibers
• No catastrophic membrane failures means that your plant keeps working
Compact design
• Smaller plant footprint reduces capital costs
Proven system performance
• Successful track record of operation in hundreds of municipal and industrial
applications provides you with peace of mind

The Challenge
An Italian seaside town with about 60,000 residents needed to revamp its obsolete and
undersized municipal wastewater plant. The town is located on a renowned stretch of
coastland, so it was very important for the municipality to select the right technological
solutions in order to guarantee the highest performance, while having the least environmental
impact.

12
The Solution
• By installing a new Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) GE Water & Process Technologies was
able to retro-fit the client’s existing wastewater plant to provide better quality effluents
and allow for greater capacity
• During the start-up, GE recommended and implemented its BioPlus* bioaugmentation
program aimed at rapidly re-growing a population of bacteria in the new customer’s
activated sludge bioreactor
• The products selected were BioPlus A2900 (for generic Chemical Oxygen Demand COD
removal) and BioPlus BA2912 (for Nitrogen compounds removal)
• The products were added in stepwise fashion over a period of seven days. A GE
representative took samples from the MBR and monitored the progress of bacteria
growth and contaminant reduction
• Samples from the MBR were frequently analyzed for COD, ammonia, nitrates and
phosphates. pH was carefully monitored to ensure the suitable range for nitrification
process

The Results & Conclusions
Results:
• Results were monitored by measuring biomass growth, effluent COD and Ammonia
degradation
• In just seven days, the MLSS increased from 1000 mg/l to over 9000 mg/l (normal levels
for MBR technology)
• After this period, the new plant achieved its start-up goals and was able to produce
acceptable effluent for direct discharge to the sea
• Odors coming from the renovated wastewater plant were negligible compared to the
older facility, which was helpful in promoting a more positive environmental image in the
community
Conclusions:
• BioPlus BA2900 and BA2912 accelerated bacterial growth rates and resulted in the
fastest start-up that the customer had seen in recent years
• GE’s technologies (BioPlus products and ZeeWeed membranes) allowed the customer
to safely and rapidly restart their wastewater plant, while meet-ing environmental EU
regulations

  • 7. 7 ZeeWeed® Membrane Technology • ZeeWeed® Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane is a pressure-driven barrier to suspended solids, bacteria, viruses, endotoxins and other pathogens used to produce water with very high purity and low silt density • It can serve as a treatment for surface water, ground water, and biologically treated municipal effluent (membrane bioreactor and tertiary treatment) • It can also serve as a pre-treatment before reverse osmosis and other membrane systems The global installed base of GE's ZeeWeed® ultrafiltration (UF) membrane has the capacity to enable the reuse of over 425 million gallons of water per day for a variety of uses, equivalent to the daily water consumption of 4.7 million average Americans
  • 8. 8 Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) – The Process • The ZeeWeed membrane bioreactor (MBR) process is a GE technology that consists of a suspended growth biological reactor integrated with an ultrafiltration membrane system, using the ZeeWeed hollow fiber membrane • ZeeWeed ultrafiltration membranes are immersed in an aeration tank, in direct contact with mixed liquor. Through the use of a permeate pump, a vacuum is applied to a header connected to the membranes • The vacuum draws the treated water through the hollow fiber ultrafiltration membranes. Permeate is then directed to disinfection or discharge facilities • Intermittent airflow is introduced to the bottom of the membrane module, producing turbulence that scours the external surface of the hollow fibers. This scouring action transfers rejected solids away from the membrane surface
  • 9. 9 Membrane Bioreactor - Features and Benefits Physical ultrafiltration (UF) barrier • Produces a high quality effluent suitable for direct reuse Unmatched fiber ruggedness • Ensures a longer membrane life in harsh wastewater operating environments Hollow fiber geometry • Provides a greater filtration surface area which reduces plant footprint and effectively distributes cleaning solutions Effective backpulse cleaning • Maintains long-term, peak system performance and provides a simple, rapid method of recovery in the event of a plant upset Automated in-situ cleaning • Simplifies system operation and maintenance, while reducing operating costs "Self-healing" fibers • No catastrophic membrane failures means that your plant keeps working Compact design • Smaller plant footprint reduces capital costs Proven system performance • Successful track record of operation in hundreds of municipal and industrial applications provides you with peace of mind
